The ride into Balamb had been quite. Rinoa had gazed out of the window listening to the radio as Squall had sped along the highway. All seemed normal, if only the silence that hung between them had been comfortable.
They had been together for two years and everything had seemed well. Rinoa had helped him open up and speak his feelings, had help him realise that sometimes friends are important and can be trusted. Rinoa had even shown him the wander of love and the passion of sex. She had been his first and most cherished, only for the past 3 months there had been someone else.
Squall pulled the car into the car park, cutting the music off as the engine purred to a halt. Rinoa turn to him with a soft smile on her face. Squall could tell that Rinoa knew something was wrong. The bright sparkle that rested in her dark eyes tonight was nothing than a slither of it normal beauty.
Squall silently got out and rounded the car to open the passenger door for Rinoa. “Thanks.” She smiled lightly as she slid her arm into Squall’s strolling towards the restaurant door. Squall still silent pressed the button for the alarm as he drew the door open for Rinoa to enter the restaurant.
It was exactly the sort of place Rinoa would have expected Seifer to frequent: expensive and flashy. The sort of place that would never serve prawn cocktail or steak more than medium rare. This place was so unlike Squall but who was she to try and tell anymore. No one took any notice of them as the headwaiter led them over to one of the best tables in the room.
“I can recommend the duckling” Squall advised, glancing down the menu. “Unless your on a vegetarian kick again.”
“Yes Squall. I’m on that ‘vegetarian kick’ again.” Rinoa said in a voice soft as a sigh.
“Well then can I suggest the spinach roulade.” Squalll remark blandly. “I hear it’s quite nice.”
“Ok. I might try that another day. I think I’ll just stick with the Cesar salad.” Rinoa smiled lightly.
“Wine?” Squall suggested without missing a beat.
“Just a little.” Rinoa answered brightly.
“Well then I suggest you have a glass of the house wine. I’ll have a glass of Perrier,” Squall added to the waiter, “with a slice of lemon.”
Squall watch Rinoa fiddle with her napkin across the table. Something was bothering her, which made Squall regret his decision to tell Rinoa that he was leaving her tonight.
“Rinoa.” He said in a soft voice. “I… I think we need to talk.”
Rinoa Squirmed in her seat. “Ok… if you really think we have to…” Rinoa said unsurely.
“Rinoa… You know I love you… it just that recently.” Squall was cut off sharply by Rinoa.
“I have to go to the bathroom” Squall watched as Rinoa made a headline for the ladies room.
By the time Rinoa had rejoined Squall, their dinner had been brought out and her eyes looked a little puffier. Squall and Rinoa ate in that uncomfortable silence that seemed to be all to familiar of late. Squall took a deep breath, “Rinoa we…”
“Squall I love you.” Rinoa cut in. “You know I love you… I’ll always love you but I don’t want to be with you any more.” Rinoa took a deep breath looking carfully at Squall across the table. “It’s not that I don’t love you… I’m just not in love with you any more.”
“Rinoa… I” Squall began before Rinoa raised her hand to silence him.
“I’m moving to Trabia with Selphie… I’m sorry I understand if you’re mad and never want to talk to me again but I want you to know. I love you and I want to still be your friend. I’m going to go and get a cab now… just call me later when you’ve had time to recover… if you want that is.” Rinoa reached down for her bag looking apologetically at Squall.
“Oh… Yeah.” Rinoa flicked a slightly uncertain smile at Squall across the table. There was something that had been bothering her ever since they had come into the restaurant, and she realised that the prices were probably just a bit above her price range. “Er… do you want to split the bill fifty-fifty?”
“Of course not.” Squall glanced across the room to catch the waiter’s eye, and handed him a credit card.
“Ok well…” Rinoa leaned forward one last time and pressed a kiss to Squall’s cheek, “Thanks for everything… I hope we can still be friends.”
Squall watched in shock as Rinoa walked out of the restaurant door and into the awaiting taxicab. He shook his head lightly to clear his thoughts. Rinoa had just left him… for Selphie… that was easier than I thought…Seifer is going to find this highly amusing.
