Chapter One

~Obligatory Statement~

I don't own the characters in this story. Squenix owns them. I have taken their characters and subjected them to horrible acts of depravity, and in this story, to implied acts of depravity on the part of one sick S.O.B. by name of Hojo.

Oh, and this is a blanket statement affecting this and all subsequent chapters. There. On to the story.

"Have you made your decision?" he asked, eyes trained in the wavering light onto a test tube that no doubt contained the serum he had been injecting into Lucretia every day. He put it back into its stand and turned those careful eyes onto me.

"I have decided to take you up on your offer," I replied after a moment. No need to stall when answering such a question. I should have known when I was given the option that I would take it. There is no other option before me. I cannot simply continue living on in this house to provide protection for the two of them- not now. Not after Lucretia has become pregnant, not after Hojo has won the heart of the woman I love. Hojo smiled at my words and rubbed his hands together, moving to a pile of papers and rummaging through them.

"Excellent, Vincent. I'm glad you came around. After all, I could think of no one better to help me in this... scientific endeavor." Hojo gently tugged a piece of official-looking paper from the middle of a stack on one of the back tables and, drawing a pen from his lab coat, handed them to me.

"What is this?" I asked, turning my eyes to the document before me. I knew what it was, of course; it was a binding contract, one headed with ShinRa's official seal. I began scanning it, looking for anything that might tell me I should not sign.

"Oh, just some legality thing. I need you to sign that so that I can take you out of the Turks and put you under my jurisdiction. I can't have anyone trying to order you out to a mission when I need to keep you under my eye." I scanned the paper for anything that seemed out of the ordinary and it seemed just as it should... only...

"What is this part about "certain medical complications"?" I looked up from the paper to where the scientist stood scrutinizing me, trying not to look impatient.

"In case you have an allergic reaction to any of the reagents I plan on giving you. It's all very technical," Hojo said, with a dismissive wave of his hand. "Mere legalities you need not concern yourself with, Vincent." I looked back down at the paper, reading further, making sure to commit the document to memory in case I needed it later.

"And what is this about waiving human rights?!" I said, incredulous. He expected me to give myself over completely to Hojo? I thought that this would be nothing more than a series of shots, like Lucretia had been receiving. What could possibly happen that would require such a clause?

"Oh that's just a fancy way of saying that in case you are having such a bad reaction that you can't make your own decisions, I will step in for you. Legally, I can't even give you a shot for the pain unless I have complete authority." I don't trust the way he keeps dismissing my concerns as if they are nothing. If I were to sign over my rights as a human being, Hojo would be able to torture me in any way he saw fit.

"Isn't there a better way of doing this? I don't know how I feel about signing away my rights as a human being." He turned an aggravated eye on me, as if he didn't have the time to discuss this.

"If you don't want to sign, then don't. I'm sure I can find someone else to take your spot, Vincent. It will be difficult, but I've all the world to search and I know there are people willing to do it for me." I returned my attention to the paper, uncertain. I continued to read it, and other than those two clauses, found nothing in particular that stood out that I could not handle.

Of course, it doesn't really matter whether I signed it or not. Hojo may as well have owned me without that piece of paper. I was a broken man. I had lost the one thing I needed in this life and now I felt I had nothing left. What did it matter what became of my body, when my heart and soul were already lost? I took the cap off of the pen and signed my name in the dark red ink, feeling as though I had signed it in my own blood. As soon as I had finished signing, before I could even replace the cap on the pen, he snatched the paper from me.

"Thank goodness. For a moment there I thought you weren't going to sign it." He finished shoving it into a pile of paper and looked up at me, a gleam in his eyes I did not like. "We will begin tomorrow. I want you to take today off- I'm your new boss. Go into town if you want, or just stay upstairs. Get plenty of sleep tonight, tomorrow will be a busy day."

Yeah, I know it's been a while. If you find any style errors, leave a review- my beta isn't home and I just changed the perspective from third- to first-person. Just a warning, if I missed something, let me know.

Um, also, if my style seems a little choppy comparitavely, it's because it's been a while since I've done anything seven. Hopefully, I can get the ball rolling soon. I've got a million and one ideas, so stay tuned. Oh, and leave me a review, plllleeeassse.
