Chapter Nine

“What do you mean, she’s gone?!” The low growl would have been followed by blows, but Sephiroth was cut off by the sight of Sanura collapsing to the ground, eyes wide and filled with tears. It took a moment, but the slow, high-pitched keening noise soon began to emanate from her throat, though her lips did not part.

“…Sanura…” Aerith whispered, stepping forward to reach out and touch her, only to find herself thrown to the side as the woman leapt to her feet and ran past them. Zack managed to catch Aerith before she hit the pavement, but while Tseng moved to go after Sanura, Sephiroth grabbed his shoulder, shaking his head.

“…I’ll go find her. You need to report to headquarters with Zack.” His voice was quiet, far more quiet than anyone had ever heard from him. “…They’re sending you to Banora…to look for them both. Since they’re from the area, ShinRa is hoping that’s where they might have gone.”

“…then I’m coming with you.” Aerith’s voice left no room for argument, and as the group went their separate ways, she shifted her gaze to Sephiroth. “Do you know where she went?”

“…no.”

“Then slow down and let me lead. I do have a good idea as to where she’s gone.” The irritated tone made him pause and turn to look at the woman, tiny in comparison to him, but nevertheless fixing him with a fierce glare. “Follow me.”

“…yes, ma’am.” He seemed amused by the firmness in her tone, following behind her and chuckling softly.

“What’s so funny? Seraphina has disappeared and Sanura is having a nervous breakdown! What’s wrong with you!?”

“…The fact that someone I could snap in half has the nerve to snap at me.”

“If you hurt me, your sisters would never forgive you.” The growl was getting more agitated by the minute, but as he merely patted her on the head, she stopped to stare in complete shock. “What is wrong with you?!”

“…I am trying to remind myself that my sisters were like you not too long ago. …temperamental, bossy, and alive.” The look of pain passed from his face quickly, but Aerith caught it. A comforting smile was given as she patted his arm, then turned to lead the way yet again. Entering the church where she grew so many flowers, they found Sanura lying prone upon one of the few remaining pews, staring blankly at the flowers as though waiting for them to speak.

“…Sanura…” Aerith’s whisper brought no reaction, and as they stood before her, her gaze did not change, staring blankly ahead and only blinking when necessary. “…we should get her home…”

Despite the care and attention they gave her, Sanura remained silent as the grave, though she ate, slept, and showered normally. She just refused to speak, or even acknowledge anyone. In a few weeks, Zack and Tseng returned, and came straight to Sephiroth.

“…Sephiroth, it’s about Angeal…” The name had the silent woman flying into the room to look at them expectantly, but after sharing a glance with Sephiroth, Tseng let his gaze drop to the ground, and shook his head. “…he’s gone…or as good as gone. He’s become unstable…Nothing we said or did would change anything…”

“…We’re also being sent to Nibelheim. We leave tomorrow.” Zack informed Sephiroth, before glancing to Sanura, who had gone limp, and dropped into one of the chairs in the room. “…I understand you might not feel comfortable leaving Sanura here alone, but Tseng offered to-”

“No.” Sanura’s voice, cracking from disuse, spoke up from the chair. All three men turned to her, blinking in shock. “…I’m going with you. I lost my sister. I’m not being separated from my brother, too. I can still move, I can still fight. You aren’t leaving me behind.”

“…very well.” Sephiroth didn’t even try to argue as he had before, turning away. “We should pack, then, Sanura.”

“Okay.” She slipped from the room to pack for the journey, leaving the three men alone, Sephiroth glancing back to the two.

“Tseng, I want you to keep looking for Seraphina. She can’t have just disappeared completely. Zack, we’ll be at the helipad by six in the morning. I’m assuming that’s when we leave, just as before?”

“Yes, but-”

“She’s coming.” That was his last word, as he gestured them toward the door, then left the room. They were crazy if they thought he was leaving the only sister he had left, behind.
