Chapter 10

Chapter 10
The Forgotten City, also known as the City of the Ancients, rests peacefully as ever. Buildings made out of shells. The people who were in harmony with the planet are now long gone. Their homes stand a monument to their passing. For Zack and Fianna, this is their first time here. This time, they all decide to disembark.
Zack has to admit, the place is so peacefully and yet a little unsettling. Like walking into a graveyard. No matter how beautiful it is. Cloud also seems a little distant with him. All Zack can figure is Cloud might be feeling guilt over how Aerith died.
Cid is the first to speak, “ No offense, but we look like a fucking tourist group. “ Remaking at their large number of people.
Zack, “ I want to see where she died. “ Turns to Cloud, “ Please? “
Cloud nods, “ No problem. “ Looks to Fianna, “ Stay with Cid and Vincent. “
Zack gestures with his right hand, “ So lead the way. “
Cid, Vincent, and Fianna off for the outer buildings, some of them looking like oversized sea shells. Cloud seems little more relaxed with it just being the two of them. They walk towards what looks like a wall of rock. Closer he can see openings within the walls. The path they are going is towards the central opening. Yet, Zack senses something off. As if something unsettling is coming over the place. The closer they go in, the more he senses Legion being here. There is a well shaped cavern inside the rock. In the center of the cavern is what looks like a a shell shaped building and next to it is a beautiful pond.
Cloud, “ After Sephiroth killed her, I placed her body in the pond. I think she liked it that way. “
Zack goes to the pool and kneels on one knee. The waters look so black because the lack of sky. Then something sweet in the air but the smell is wrong. “ Something is here. “ he backs away from the water, looking around for what he can’t quite pinpoint.
Cloud stands back, as he didn’t go to the pond, “ Its okay, Zack. Aerith is here. She is going to help us. “
Zack sees Aerith at the pond’s edge, “ That is not Aerith. “
Cloud, “ Legion wants you to think that. “ Frowning as this is what Aerith told him might happen. That Zack may be fooled into attack her. “ Please, you must trust me. “
Zack stands with his hand on the hilt. He knows legion is here to kill someone. To take everything that is Cloud into itself. “ NO, leave him alone! “ Standing with sword in hand, he charges Aerith.
Cloud gets in between Zack and his target, their blades strike, “ Stop it Zack! Please don’t make me hurt you. “
Zack, “ I’m sorry, Cloud “ Punches Cloud in the forehead. Enough to daze his friend so he can leap over him. Aerith standing like a tragic princess. Zack knows better. Everything seems to slow around him. Can hear Cloud screaming for him to stop, his sword bearing down at her chest.
Pain seems to suddenly hit him from his back, as the sword pieces his chest. Cloud has stabbed him from behind trying to defend Aerith. Zack stands in shock as he staggers as he tries to finish his attack. Aerith smiling at him with such a fake smile. It is so hard to breath. His lung as good as hit lung. Perhaps he might bleed to death before the day is out? With the last of his energy, he strikes out. She didn't expect him to get the hit in. His sword slicing through her body. What comes next, from her body, is not red blood. Black fluid that spills down. Zack falls forward, past what's left of her fake body as it dissolves. Down into the black waters.
Cloud yells, “ Zack! “
Zack can’t see him, Can’t hear him after the water fills his ears. Falling into the darkness. He understands many things now. He is connected to legion and with his death, legion will assume his claim on Fianna. They were born together. Till now Zack got lucky, but his luck finally is running out. Is this the end? A warm light encompasses him and the pain fades. It is peaceful.
Cloud looks at the spot they once were, Aerith was a lie. The whole time, legion was screwing with Cloud. He just killed Zack! Does that mean Zack was the real Zack? What is the truth?! The howl of monsters break him from his shock. There are still others here. Outside the monsters begin to pour into the city. Sounds of fighting are heard not far. Cloud knows he can’t help Zack now, but the others still need him.
Cloud, “ Oh god... Forgive me, Zack. “
Cid and Vincent have been battling the monsters. Fianna was with them but they lost track of her during the battle. Just too many monsters even for them. Cloud’s arrival is very much appreciated Even his sword, they are struggling. Suddenly, the monsters seem to stop attacking.
Cid panting, “ About damn time.. God I need a smoke. “ Lights up a cigarette.
Vincent who has more endurance, “ Where is Fianna? “
Cloud can see no sign of her, “ We have to look for her! “
They search among the dead bodies. There is nothing to see. The monsters start to disappear into the life stream. Still no sign of a human. Cloud realizes that the attack was just a distraction and a way to get rid of them. He has failed Zack and Fianna. Cloud sinks to his knees and weeps.
