Chapter 12
Nanaki watched with an amused expression as Cid examined the damage to the landing gear. One could easily distinguish the rookies from the veterans of his crew by their reactions to the pilot's rants, some cringing at his more colorful outbursts while the rest waited patiently for him to cool down.
"Sir?"
"What the hell do you want, Jenkins?"
"Sir, the guard has regained consciousness and has given a description of the creature that attacked the ship."
Cid immediately stood and turned to face the man, "Well? Spit it out already! We don't have all damn day."
"Yes sir. He said that it appeared from the shadows, at first appearing as a mist but quickly solidifying to a large four legged creature. It was mainly black with a bronze face, spikes on its legs, and a long slender tail. The feet of the monster seemed like that of a bird with three large talons in the front and one in the back."
Nanaki stiffened in surprise, "That sounds an awful lot like the creatures Yazoo and Loz summoned before Bahamut appeared, Cid."
"Eh?" The blond captain thought about it for a moment while chewing on the end of his cigarette, "I think yer right, Red. But you have those two locked up tight, so how in the hell did one of those things get out here? Maybe its a leftover from that battle?"
"Perhaps, but I have a bad feeling that it wasn't. I need to get back to Vincent's house as soon as possible."
"Yeah, I got ya. Lemme call Shera and see if she can get Tiny Bronco II out here."
"It's appreciated," Nanaki turned his golden gaze towards Edge. 'Vincent, I hope you get back soon. Perhaps your instinct was right, we shouldn't have left those two alone so soon.'
~
Vincent began to drift from the darkness of his mind, the familiar beep of a heart monitor echoing in his ears. As he slowly began to get a feel for his surroundings, Chaos spoke, 'DON'T MAKE ANY UNNECESSARY MOVEMENTS HUMAN AND DO NOT RESPOND TO ME. I KNOW YOU ARE AWAKE BUT LET THEM THINK YOU ARE STILL ASLEEP. THEY ARE REGISTERING YOUR VERY BRAIN ACTIVITY BUT I HAVE KEPT THE OTHERS RILED UP SO THEY SHOULD NOT NOTICE IF YOU REMAIN CALM.' The demon's voice sounded muffled, like it was being smothered but the gunman easily followed the suggestions. Turk training demanded that calm be maintained at all times. He also had a great deal of experience in tricking the activity monitors, it granted a few moments respite from Hojo's torments if he thought the subject was still unconscious. The Professor always wanted his experiments awake and screaming.
A soft sound reached his sensitive ears, it seemed to be just outside the room. He allowed a general curiosity to enter his mind and, thankfully, Chaos understood, 'I CAN'T HEAR ANY BETTER THAN YOU RIGHT NOW. HOWEVER IF YOU ARE WILLING TO TRUST ME FOR A MOMENT...' Vincent paused for a moment but could not allow himself to consider the demon's request. Finally, he allowed a fleeting image of himself nodding to enter his mind. 'THIS WILL BE A LITTLE PAINFUL. DO NOT REACT.'
He found that a little difficult as it felt as though his ears were being shredded and rebuilt from the inside. The gunman kept his silence though, instead focusing on the sound of the heart monitor, timing his own heart rate. Then as the pain died down, words began to drift in from outside the room. "...is still unconscious, Mr. Tseng. We have been monitoring him for the last hour as you specified but there has been no change. He has an abnormal amount of brain activity but it is well within normal range considering the demons in him are probably quite agitated, even with the chemical inhibitors."
"That does not matter. My partner and I are here to make sure he will bring no harm to Mr. Shinra when he arrives. I would suggest that you two leave." Vincent immediately recognized the calm monotone of Tseng and then another familiar voice broke in. "Yeah, we don't need either of you boys puking all over the delicate equipment, eh?"
'RENO!' Chaos growled angrily, 'I WONDER IF HIS BLOOD MATCHES HIS HAIR COLOR.' Vincent did not bother telling the demon to shut up, he found himself actually wanting to agree for once. The sound of two sets of footsteps left the adjoining room and the door to his cell was opened. He felt a sharp pain in his ears again and realized that Chaos was undoing the modifications to his hearing.
"Mr. Valentine, I am already aware that you are awake, though I must admit you do quite the admirable job of hiding it. However, the injection you received would have worn off exactly...three minutes and forty seconds ago."
Scarlet eyes slowly slid open, turning to glare at the Wutaian man. "How did you know he was awake Tseng?" Reno leaned out of the room, looking at the screens. "Damn boss, even now he doesn't show a register on the monitors. I think he's even better than..."
"Reno," Tseng simply called, his voice iced over with irritation.
"Fine, I know. But with the bullshit that Rufus has planned for him I still don't think it matters if we talk in front of him. I will say one thing, I don't like it. The man is one of us, yo. What if it was you or me lying on that table?"
Vincent silently listened, wondering what it was that Shinra thought he could use to hold him.
Tseng reached up and pinched the top of his nose before shaking his head. "Reno, do me a favor and shut up for five minutes. What you are about to hear is of the utmost classification, even on the pain of death I swear to you that you must never reveal it to anyone outside this room."
"Shit, you want me to keep something even from Rufus fucking Shinra? Damn boss, didn't think you trusted me that much. Last time you said something like that was..." suddenly, green eyes widened in shock, "Boss? Is this gonna be like the Gainsborough case?"
"Hopefully it won't last that long. Not if our captive here decides to cooperate." Dark eyebrows furrowed as the two Turks turned their attention to the restrained man. "You see, as I stated to you earlier Mr. Valentine, a Turk's orders are always to be followed, no questions asked. Once the orders have been completed however, that is another story completely. I have done and seen many despicable things in my time under Rufus and his father. Now, Mr. Shinra is trying his best to turn over a new leaf so to speak, however, he still is an opportunist. When he found a way to get you, Mr. Valentine, he of course took it. As a Turk, it is against the law for me to question or argue with his decisions. An outside party though, may provide him with an example as to why it is foolish to continue toying with people's lives and freedoms. Do you see where I am going with this?"
Vincent nodded slightly, still wary of the other man's intentions. "Glad to see that." Tseng motioned to Reno, who immediately went to the other room. A moment later, the bindings covering him retracted, "Now to another point. If it was discovered that you were set free, well, that wouldn't be good for our jobs or our lives. Now if you fought your way into escaping, while leaving us alive of course..."
"I see." The gunman glanced down at the white sheet covering his body, aware that his clothes were gone from the cold steel pressing against his flesh.
"I do suppose you will need these, correct Mr. Valentine?"
A bundle of black and red was set on the floor as Vincent sat up. The sheet slid down several inches and he heard a low whistle coming from the other room. Realizing that Reno was staring at the scars on his body, the gunman quickly snatched up the sheet and reached for his clothes. "Hojo was one real piece of work, huh? Bet you were glad when that bastard finally got his."
Vincent merely remained silent, angrily pulling the I.V. drip from his arm before donning his shirt. After a moment of clasps and buckles, the gunman felt safe behind his high collar. "My gun?"
Tseng turned to a nearby dresser, removing a gleaming Death Penalty from the drawer. Vincent quickly scanned the gun and, deeming it relatively untouched, placed it in it's holster. "Before we move on with this, I have a question."
Reno entered the room, his EMR already in hand as the Turk leader nodded, "I suspected as much."
"Why did Rufus think he had something that would hold me to him?"
Amber eyes hardened momentarily, then Tseng let them drop as he answered. "The scientists have recovered much of Professor Hojo's files from the labs, it was how we knew what agents to use on you. Also," the Wutaian paused, indecision in his eyes, "We recovered many of his...tools."
A dark eyebrow rose as a momentary jolt of fear entered Vincent's mind, "Such as?"
The Turk leader turned back to the dresser and pulled out a silver piece of metal. Scarlet eyes widened in recognition and horror as Tseng held out one of his nightmares, the collar. The gunman's head dropped, his eyes shadowed by his hair. A cold voice echoed in the steel room, "You wanted a fight?"
Reno took several steps back as the dark figure seemed to pulse and tattered red wings replaced the cloak, "Oh shit."
Golden eyes glared with rage into amber, a wicked fanged grin appearing on Chaos' face, "You've got it, human."
