Chapter 14

'Internal thought'

'CHAOS SPEAKING'

~ (Time and/or story focus shift)

A/N: Two things: 1) In this chapter I won't be distinguishing Chaos' voice as usual because it should be obvious. 2) My apologies on the tardiness of this chapter. I ended up getting sick and numb brain fuzzies from sickness aren't conducive to writing.

Anywho, enough of my rants, here's the story!

Chapter 14

'Where am I? What's going on?' Vincent felt as though he was floating in a sea of darkness. Then he became aware of a subtle shift, distorted shapes and colors coming into view. As his eyes tried to focus on the images, the gunman realized there was another presence. Turning around, he growled, "Chaos, what is the meaning of this?

An indistinct shadow floated in front of him, the only features being glowing, golden eyes and a white fanged grin, "I have been imprisoned within you for nearly 35 years now, human. Yet you and I have never truly spoken to one another. After the trust you showed me earlier, I felt you might be willing to."

Vincent was wary of this sudden change in the demon. When had he wanted something other than death and torment? 'Come to think of it though, he has been acting differently these last few days.' "Why this change, Chaos?" Scarlet eyes swept the room, noting the familiar setting, "And why, of all places, is this talk happening in the old labs?"

The grin on Chaos quickly faded as the sound of familiar footsteps echoed into the room. A condescending and maddening voice soon followed, "Such a good little monster aren't we? You'll make the perfect pet for him once we get you and your others trained."

Vincent whipped around, his eyes widening when he saw Hojo standing in the doorway. A low growl came from behind him, "I didn't pick this human, this is your own nightmare. Or should I say memory?"

The gunman quickly noticed that the Professor wasn't looking at him, rather at a huddled mass on the floor. All that could be seen of the figure was long, dark, tangled hair and pale thin arms wrapped around equally thin legs. The person was curled up in a corner of the lab, seemingly unaffected by the cool, sterile atmosphere. Vincent wondered if the figure was even conscious as Hojo pulled out a notepad, speaking to himself as he wrote, "Lack of verbal and physical response without a direct command, good. At least that part of your training has gone well." He rolled up the sleeve to his while lab coat, revealing a silver bracer that went from the wrist to the middle of his forearm, "Stand."

"Yes Master," came the dry, muffled response.

'That voice...' Vincent watched as the figure unfolded from it's position on the floor. Long, lean limbs moved mechanically as the male stood, his face pointed towards the floor, the only clothing being fitted, knee-length black shorts and...the gunman shook his head in denial, "No, that can't be..."

"Not a pretty sight are you?" Chaos growled by his ear.

The raven haired gunman was unable to find his voice as he truly saw for the first time what he had once looked like. His body was malnourished and dirty, dried blood and other mysterious substances caking his pale skin. 'This must be before he removed my arm,' Vincent thought as he took in the chipped and ragged nails on both hands. His mind froze when he bent over to look into his own scarlet and amber eyes. There was no life in the softly glowing orbs. This wasn't a mere mask though, it seemed as though his very soul had been erased and all that remained was a shell.

Hojo's smug voice interrupted his horrified studies, "Today is a special day, Vincent. Today, the other scientists get to see your progress. They have grown curious of my little pet project." The man sneered for a moment before wrinkling his nose and giving a snobbish sniff, "Though I do suppose this means you will need to be cleaned somewhat. Can't have your filth making them shy away from a monster like you anymore than necessary, hm?"

Vincent saw a nearly suppressed flinch run through the silent captive when Hojo said "monster" and apparently so did the Professor, "Oh? What was that? Still don't believe what you are, eh?"

An angry muttering reminded the gunman of Chaos' presence, "I swear, human, his death in the end was far too quick. If he had been a demon in my realm, I would have been proud to have him as an underling. As a human though, he far overstepped his bounds."

"He was a demon, Chaos. A monster in human form, just like me. I take it that you know this memory?"

"Unlike your fragile mind, I remember everything that happened. Though I can't say that is necessarily a good thing. Watch."

Hojo had a chilling grin on his face as one hand went to the bracer. Fear emanated in waves from the captive and Vincent cringed as his old self began to plead, "N...no Master! Please...please don't! I'll do anything..."

"No, Vincent. Apparently you need to be reminded of your place in this world."

A red gem on the device was pressed and Vincent saw something he knew he would never forget. The prisoner began to scream as his entire body shook. Muscles bulged, fangs elongated, and fur sprouted as the gunman recognized the form of Galian Beast. The transformation left as quickly as it appeared but the captive was given no rest. He was immediately forced to change into Death Gigas, then Hellmasker, and finally even Chaos himself was pulled from the torn body. Each demon roared with pain equaling that of their human host as the process was repeated several times. As the last transformation finally left him, the man collapsed in a pool of his own blood, Hojo's mad laughter echoing in the room.

Vincent shuddered as the scene faded to a familiar darkness, "Normally I relive my memories as they surface. Not that I am ungrateful, but why was this time different?"

"I believe it has to do with my presence, human. Even so, your body is still reliving them. It will be quite amusing if one of your companions decides to try and wake you."

The gunman thought for a moment, "I would hope they do not. If Nanaki has already left though, it is a possibility. You said you wanted to talk, Chaos?"

"Actually it's more of a proposition, host."

"Host?" Scarlet eyes glanced at the shadowy form of the demon, "That's a new one on me. Usually it's human, manling, vile flesh prison...although, it's been about two years since you used that last one," Vincent remarked with an oddly light tone.

Chaos laughed, "Are you joking with me? Hm, if I didn't know any better, I would say you were starting to like me." The gunman crossed his arms and glared impatiently at the demon, "Don't give me that look human. I might just decide to stop being so helpful. The deal is this, I want...no I NEED out. Before you start saying no, hear me out. You asked me earlier why I have changed recently. Have you never thought that perhaps demons need sustenance just as you humans do? We were starved by that infernal contraption. We could kill and torture but we would get nothing from it."

The gunman took a moment to watch the demon as he fumed and ranted. It made sense, in an odd fashion. "What exactly is it that you...eat?"

Chaos fell silent momentarily, seeming to gather his thoughts, "I have kept the other three sustained with my own energies. They are of the lower hierarchy and do not require much to survive. What we actually consume are things like rage, death, pain, lust, and despair. The parts of life that humans consider their darkness."

"So you want me to let you out so you can torture and murder for food? Your argument does little to convince me."

"I am willing to compromise with you. When you release me, I will only go after monsters and beasts. Not nearly as filling as human but it will keep me from digressing into a state of animalism again. As far as my part of our little...truce, I will continue to give my assistance as I did earlier today. I will give you time to think on it, however with my current energy levels, it would be best to answer within a week's time."

Vincent remained silent for a moment. Part of him argued that perhaps the demon spoke the truth, after all look at what he himself had been reduced to under Hojo's tender care. Chaos interrupted his thoughts with a growl, "I can hear what you think human, and trust me, what you saw was not the worst of times."

The void around them began to shift again, colors starting to form a very different scene. As the images came into view, Vincent heard the demon groan, "Your mind has a funny way of deciding to show you these things. I will stay nearby, you don't want to relive this one."

A dark eyebrow rose as the scene began, "I would be...grateful."

"Don't be. I just don't want this...nightmare to affect your judgment on our deal."

A/N: Had a couple of friends of mine ask me what motivated me to do this and I thought you guys might like to know too. The first thing was that I was dissatisfied with Dirge of Cerberus. I don't have anything against it or the storyline, its just not how I would have wanted things to go. So I decided, why not try to write what I wanted to happen after Advent Children?

As I started though, I couldn't quite motivate myself to get the right mindset for all these fun characters. So I played some music that was on my friend's comp and came across Linkin Park's Minutes to Midnight CD and found that it seemed to really get me going. For some reason, those songs just seem to put me in the right frame of mind for all this craziness. Oh and if you want to know what song is Vincent for me it's 'What I've Done'. Suits him, no?

Now on to the reviews!!!!

Frizz: Between Vincent and Sephiroth, I would have to say that Vincent is definitely my favorite. So yes I agree that he is hot. As far as Reno goes, this is nowhere near his final appearance in my story.
