The Tournament Begins

*****************

“Ah! Fratley… this will be a supreme place to watch the tournament from.” Freya sighed as she leaned on Fratley’s arm.

“Indeed, Freya. No one will block our sight here.” He answered. Freya and Fratley had taken their places on a nearby rooftop that overlooked the 3 arenas below in the town square. “I heard that Zidane is competing.”

“That Zidane…” Freya shook her head, “I should have known that he’d want to test his strength against so many big, husky men, none unlike him.”

Fratley chuckled, “The only reason he does such things is because he knows he will beat them shamefully!”

“You are right…” Freya had to agree. Zidane was strong; more so than anyone she knew. There was no doubt in her mind that Zidane would win either one of the strength-skilled divisions. Magic, on the other hand…

Meanwhile, down on the grounds, Kuja and Garnet arrived and took front row seats to watch the proceedings. “Excuse me, Blank!” Garnet called the tall, red haired Tantalus member over to her.

“Oh, hey Queen Garnet,” Blank had a clipboard and scroll of parchment in hand and was currently writing names in their respective slots.

“Blank, tell me. What division will Zidane be competing in?” she asked.

“Strength Division, of course, your Highness.” Blank said with a grin.

“Just as I thought…” Kuja smiled knowingly, “He’ll win for sure.”

“What makes you say that?” Garnet turned to him with a fairly surprised look on her gentle, soft features.

“I know Zidane… He will shut down all opponents if he knows his pride is on the line.” Kuja nodded.

“You have a point…” Garnet turned back in her seat with a wry grin. Finally, Blank climbed the steps to the center arena and motioned for the large audience to silence.

“Good day to all spectators, and my dear Queen Garnet. We have for you today tremendous acts of speed, strength, and courage. I am happy to welcome you to this years Fighting Tournament, in the name of Queen Garnet herself! We have a lively show in store for you and we shall begin with the Magic Division! Will this year’s contestants please come forward!” Blank stepped aside as ten players climbed the stairs to the first arena and stood in a line beside him. He read each name off his list to make certain that all were present and accounted for before writing their names in no particular order on small strips of paper, each time crumpling them up and placing them into a large, decorative box. Once that was accomplished, Blank carried it down the stairs and proceeded to stand in front of Garnet.

“Now,” Blank said, “If our Queen would so like to do he honors, we shall begin.”

Garnet commenced to pull a name from the box while Blank wrote each name in an empty slot upon his scroll. As Garnet drew the last names, each player had an opponent and whoever beat whom on a two on two match would advance to the next round until two finalists were chosen. Of these two, one would be the undisputed champion.

“Alright!” Blank said in a loud, unrepressed voice, “Let the games begin!” The crowd let out a mighty cheer as the first two battlers took the stage. It was going to be a fine day.

“Come Beatrix, we must go into town.” Steiner said, assembling his armor, “yes, the fighting tournament should be unforgettable this year!”

“Quite right, I hear Zidane has entered in the Strength Division. Also, Amarant Coral has entered the Weapons Division. That should prove quite a show!” Beatrix chuckled, “but of course Steiner, we are not entirely going to watch only for leisure… We, the leaders of the Alexandrian Military, must watch over Queen Garnet, not... that she always needs watching over, of course.”

“True. If need be, Queen Garnet will protect herself, and no mistake.” Steiner nodded with a knowing smile, recalling Garnet’s obvious ability to summon. “Let us go, my dear Beatrix,” he turned and marched matter-o-factly out the door.

Beatrix shook her head and smiled, following Steiner down the stairs, “A knights work is never done.”
