Chapter Two
Several hours later, Jack finally found Daniel as he strolled out of the infirmary.
"Where have you been?" the colonel asked, having looked all over for Daniel from his favourite surface haunts to his office.
"Oh, I was giving Janet a hand with a problem patient," Daniel replied. He cleared his throat and brushed past.
"Huh?" Jack stared after him in confusion. Hadn't Janet said he'd gone to the surface for coffee?
Staring after him for a moment, Jack frowned in suspicion. He turned back to the infirmary, and acted on his curiosity, pushing open the door. A 'problem patient' would most likely be at the back in a private ward, so that's where Jack went. He was right on the mark. A man occupied one of the few solitary rooms for dire patients. They were usually used for those going through some kind of heavy withdrawal.
The man - or was it actually a woman? - lay on the bed, an expression of bliss written all over his face. When Jack tried to talk to him, he just grinned and made a sound that suggested they'd been heavily dosed with morphine... or something.
"I call him mako..." The man sing-songed very stupidly. "He's not green, and he doesn't glow, but he's mako... mako...maaaaaako......."
Jack blinked, several times, and then backed out of the room, pulling the door closed behind him.
He didn't want to know. He REALLY didn't want to know.
