To Esthar
Chapter 2
To Esthar
Squall stared out the window watching the land pass beneath the Ragnarok as it flew toward Esthar. He was still seething with fury, being forced to do this. His body was tense and he had the urge to fight. He couldn't even do that stuck on this airship. 'Damn you, Cid.' He punched the wall, leaving a small dent, knowing he would have a bruise across his knuckles for his effort and not caring in the least.
Frustrated, he stalked to the control room. He sat in the seat next to Zell with a curse. The blonde gave him an amused look, getting him a punch in the arm.
"Shit, Squall. I'm not the one making you go to Esthar. I was just ordered to take you there," Zell hissed, rubbing his arm.
"Whatever. Just get the smirk off your face. I'm not in the mood for it."
Zell sighed, shaking his head sadly. 'You never are anymore', he thought grimly. The rest of the trip was uncomfortably quiet for him. He didn't dare speak, not wanting to anger his friend further. He hoped what Cid had done would help Squall. It was killing them all, seeing him this way, unable to do anything about it. Hyne knows they had all tried.
Zell almost sighed with relief when Esthar came into view. He didn't know how much more of this cold silence he could stand. Glancing at Squall, he could see his jaw clenching, his eyes narrowing at the city they were approaching. He had a feeling that Laguna was going to get an ass chewing when they got there. Zell was pretty sure that Laguna was partly responsible for this forced vacation, and by the look on Squall's face he was thinking the same thing.
They landed on the port soon after entering Esthar airspace. Zell moved to get out of the pilot seat, but Squall stopped him. "There's no need. Go back to Garden," Squall said, getting up from his seat and grabbing his two suitcases.
"You sure you don't want me to come with?"
"No. I need to have a little talk with my father."
"Alright. See ya, Squall." He left without even saying goodbye and Zell watched him leave. "Hyne help you, Laguna. I wouldn't want to be you right now."
~~~~~
Laguna sat in his office, patiently waiting for Squall's arrival. Hard as he tried, he'd not been able to get through to his son. None of them had. At Rinoa's funeral his expression had been like stone, his eyes empty of emotion and it had terrified him. It was like Squall was an empty shell, void of any feeling, all except fury and anger.
When Cid contacted him, telling him what he proposed to do, he insisted that he send Squall to him. He wanted to do everything he could for him. He had to try, he owed it to Squall. He blamed himself for the way Squall was, not being there for him when he was a child. He lived with the guilt every day.
Squall barged into his office, tearing the shocked President from his thoughts. The look in the young mans eyes was searing and he mentally prepared for the impending argument.
"Are you responsible for this?!" Squall shouted, slamming the door behind him, rattling the doorframe.
"Son, calm down...," Laguna said softly, feeling the familiar cramping flowing up his leg.
"Just answer me. Did you talk Cid into doing this? Yes or no!"
"No....., but it was my idea for you to come here."
"Why?"
"You really need to ask that? You're my son and I want to help you." He was surprised his voice was steady, considering he felt completely helpless inside.
"Can't you all get it through your heads? I don't want help. There's nothing wrong with me!"
"I beg to differ. There's more wrong that you won't admit."
"Whatever!" Squall paced in front of his fathers desk, hands curling into fists. He scoffed in annoyance, giving Laguna dirty looks of contempt. Laguna merely watched him, letting him have his fit. "So, where will I be staying during my prison sentence?" Squall asked, eyes boring into the President.
"Squall, please don't be this way," Laguna begged, rubbing his cramped up leg.
"Just tell me where it is so I can get away from you."
Laguna sighed, pulling open a drawer in his desk, pulling out a keycard, handing it over. "It's on the 10th floor. The guard there will show you which room." Squall snatched it from his outstretched hand and left without a word, or even a backward glance.
Laguna let himself relax after his son's departure, letting out a slow breath that caught in his throat. A few tears leaked from his eyes and he looked up toward the ceiling, feeling lost. "Raine, give me the strength to help our son," he whispered, wishing she were here with him.
~~~~~
Squall stood by the window, looking down at the busy city, random thoughts going through his mind. He had nearly punched his father, but had restrained himself. As pissed as he was, he didn't want to harm the man.
He wondered how long Cid was going to keep this going and he got angry all over again. He had half a mind to just quit SeeD and Garden, leaving it behind, maybe going out on his own. But being a SeeD was all he had left and fighting was all he knew.
Against his will, his thoughts went to Rinoa. Went back to that terrible night. He had been her Knight and he had failed her. The guilt started to eat at him again and his hand gripped the hilt of Lion Heart that was secured by his side.
Squall turned from the window, heading for the door. He needed a fight and he was going to find one. He left the Presidential Palace, heading for the outskirts of the city in search of a release from the pain. When he got there, it wasn't long before he found a Chimera to let his anger out on and he ran toward it with a furious battlecry.
