“The Grand Master of the Knights Templar is worried.”

A small smirk. “As well he should be.”

Genesis lifted the heavy, bejeweled cross from the ornamented box on his dresser. “Grand Master Angeal has offered to…negotiate.”

His Eminence, Cardinal Sephiroth lounged in a nearby velvet-covered chair. He snorted. “The ability to negotiate was gone the moment he lost the Holy Land to the heathens.”

Genesis laughed and hung the cross from his neck. “Indeed. However, I believe you may be interested in the deal he had to offer.”

“And what would that be?”

“You know that his little friend was captured by the King of France.”

“Yes.”

Genesis sat on the chair across from Sephiroth and regarded him with mischief in his eyes. “The boy is being tortured by the Inquisition. He broke, and I fear he has admitted to heresy of the highest order between he and the Grand Master. This only confirms the reports we have of Angeal’s confession of laying in sin with the boy Knight. Angeal has offered to turn himself over to the Church if we requisition Sir Zackary from the dungeons of the Inquisition.”

Green eyes alit with interest. “He would turn himself over to the Church?”

“As long as his little whore goes free, he will submit to any…retribution the Church seeks against the one who lost not only the Holy Lands, but the True Cross.” Genesis’ face twisted in disgust. “I still cannot believe he let those barbarians lay their hands upon a relic touch by the blood of Her Son. The Goddess cannot be pleased.”

“Surely not,” Sephiroth agreed.

“Will you discuss the matter with our Venerable Brother?”

The silver haired man nodded. “Pope Shinra will hear of the situation. I have council with him this evening. I believe it would be to our benefit. A letter from the Church to the King should be able to pull one scrawny Knight from his dungeons. And to have that worthless excuse for a Templar in our hands…”

Genesis nodded with a smile. “Indeed, Brother.” He paused for a moment before continuing. “How are you enjoying your new assistant?”

“Cloud has surpassed my first impression of him,” Sephiroth said with a wicked smile. “He has proved his ability and passion to serve under me so frequently, I don’t think I could ever doubt his commitment again.”

The redhead snickered. “You must have a word with him about using the Lady’s name in vain, Brother. Hearing his swearing from your room every night is becoming bothersome. Also, praying to a ‘God’ instead of the Goddess? Sinful.”

“I apologize. I’ll use a gag from now on.”

Genesis smiled. “Even better.”

“If only Grand Master Angeal had learned to hide his secrets a little better,” Sephiroth mused, one hand stroking the cross on a heavy chain around his neck.

“Hmph,” Genesis agreed. “The Goddess does not tolerate fools. He was a fool many times over, and thus his reign has ended. Preaching his love to the boy like he did…sinful.”

“Agreed, Brother. To lay with another man defies the laws of the Goddess,” Sephiroth laughed heartily. “Too bad neither could hide their transgressions.”

“All to our benefit, friend.” Genesis raised an eyebrow. “And of the young Sir Zackary?”

“I’m sure he’ll enjoy his stay in our dungeons more than those of the King.”

The redhead laughed heartily. “And when shall we reveal to dear, sweet Angeal that his beloved boy Knight does not run free, but resides in our grace?”

“When he is close to breaking. It will be the sweetest of revenge to see him slip over the edge of sanity from the sight of his harlot tortured and screaming. Maybe we should draw and quarter the boy while he watches?”

“Oh, I’m sure we could find something more creative than that.”

“Yes, my Brother,” Sephiroth agreed. “I’m sure we can.”
