Chapter 1

"Dilemma - Having sworn fealty, must I spend my life in servitude?"

Steiner POV

CLANG CLUNG CLANG CLUNG CLANG CLUNG was the sound of my armor as I walked down the great halls of Alexandria. I was on patrol, checking the halls and various rooms for any suspicious behavior. It was my duty to protect the kingdom of Alexandria and its inhabitants but above all, it was my duty to serve and protect the beautiful Princess Garnet. I slowed to a stop as I began to think about the young princess. She had grown into a stunning young woman, her milky white skin that looked so smooth, her long dark tresses that resembled silk of the finest quality, and light brown doe eyes that held so much innocence and trust. Gah! I sounded like a love struck fool, my soldiers that were under me would surely laugh at me for years to come if they knew what I was thinking. However, the truth was that I am a love struck fool. I Adelbert Steiner, Captain of the Knights of Pluto, was in love with Princess Garnet. I had known that I was in love with her sometime after the she made her 17th birthday.

Oh how I long to hold her in my arms, bury my face into her hair and tell her of my feelings. Many nights I have laid in my bed thinking of the loving relationship she and I could have.
Would we get married?

Have children?

Would she love me as I love her?

Sadly, such a love could not be for many reason but the two major ones was that she was a Princess while I was a lowly knight and that I don’t think she has the same feelings I have. I sighed and continued my patrol.

Garnet POV

I sat at the table in my bedroom thinking about my mother's strange behavior. It was starting to really worry me. She hadn't been herself lately… actually, she had been acting rather strange since my birthday last year. The same day that strange man visited us... maybe he had something to do with it. Come to think of it, that was when things began to change. Doctor Tot left Alexandria shortly afterwards, too. What happened that day? I need to ask someone about this but who could I ask.

Beatrix? No, I was too shy to even approach the female knight let alone talk to her.

Zorn / Thorn? Absolutely not, they would just tell the Queen and the way they talked annoyed me to no end.

Steiner? Yes, he is very loyal to me and trusted him more then anyone else, he may be able to help me.

I got up and set off in search for Steiner. He should be in the room downstairs that serves as the headquarters for the Knights of Pluto. I went down the stairs and knocked softly on the door. No one answered but I knew he was in there because I could hear him in there yelling at his soldiers to be more competent and manly. Giggling softly, I knocked again a bit harder this time. I hear him stop yelling and then the never absent sound of his armor as he walked over to answer the door.
The door swings open and Steiner stepped out. I crane my neck to look up at the Captain's face.

"P Princess" he exclaims, "What are you doing outside your room. It is not safe for you to wonder about the halls."

"I was not wondering about the halls Steiner" I huffed," I needed someone to talk to" I said shyly.

" It would be my honor princess." He beamed.

" I will be waiting in my room." I said

" Of course Your Highness, I will make haste."

I went back up to my room and sat in one of the chairs at the table. I few minutes later there was a polite knock at my door. " May I come in Princess?"

"Of course"

The door opens and Steiner walks in, he comes over to where I am sitting and gives me a little bow. " How may I serve you Your Highness? " he politely asks.

" I wanted to talk to you about something."

" But of course Princess what is troubling you? "

"Its my mother she has been acting strange lately and I don’t know why. It started sometime around my last birthday when that strange man came to visit my mother. Soon after that mother would often gaze at me with a strange look in her eyes. I sometimes hear her saying 'not enough' or ' I need more'. It is starting to worry me and I don’t know what to do. Do you what happened the day that man came to visit?”

" Regrettably I know nothing of the man's visit. However, do not fret Princess, it is probably nothing. But if it would please you I will look into the matter. Don’t worry I will be discreet. You have nothing to worry about. "

" Thank you Steiner it means a lot to me."

" Not at all Princess it is my duty to serve you.”
