[Laguna]
It felt strange sitting by the pool again. He and his friends had once floated at it on wooden tables. They had never touched the stuff, but by inhaling its aroma it had helped heal their severely injured bodies.

He only saw faint shapes of bodies in there. He knew the dangers of the liquid. Knowing Squall was in it made Laguna feel… strange. He trusted the Elder with his life, he trusted the old shumi knew what he was doing.

The Elder had said the fire and ice spirit guarded the two boys and hopefully Almasy could heal the damaged brunet. Now, that Laguna doubted. How would such a hotheaded lad be able to save anyone’s soul? Laguna, however, didn’t have much choice than to sit and wait like everyone else.

He looked up at the entry of someone. Quistis met his eyes and for a brief moment he saw the young girl in her. Did anyone of them realise how young they were? Laguna had been twenty-two when he got into the army. That had been young. But these… They were kids with a right to kill but yet not allowed to buy alcohol. He smiled reassuringly at the blonde and Quistis shyly stepped closer.

“I’m sorry for my words and actions earlier,” she said silently.

“Na, don’t be. You’re all protecting friends and family. I… don’t have the same rights,” he said with a smile and looked down in the pool again.

“Why do you say that? You’re Squall’s father.”

“Yeah? And for how long have we known each other? We’re like strangers. His real home and family is with Garden and you guys. Don’t fret, Quistis. Sometimes friends have to fight each other,” he tried to reassure her.

She smiled and seemed to relax. They were silent for a long time. Soon voices could be heard. Seemed like Rinoa and Selphie. The whole gang had already set up a guard shift so that there always was at least one by the pool. He had to admire their determination and courage. They all believed the boys would come back. No one of them had said anything about what they thought the outcome would be, but they believed the two would come back.

Laguna stretched his back and yawned. Maybe… he somewhere on the long road of life had lost the beliefs and magic youths seemed to have boundless of?

[Seifer]
He had his knight clothes on again, after much arguing. Hyperion was by his side, though he knew he didn’t need her. Squall was by his side, leather outfit in perfect health, Lionheart shining by his side. The brunet had a frown between his eyes and he radiated both fear and determination.

Seifer had succeeded in some way to convince the tricky man to walk outside and take a look for himself. To see that everything was fine and that Seifer was with him out there. Still, Squall believed him being in captivity, but he had regained fighting spirit.

“You’ll be there, right?” The question had been so faint that Seifer had to figure it out before answering.

“Yeah, I’ll be there. Don’t worry.” He wished the brunet could believe him.

But Squall was determined that he would return to his battered, captive self and yet again have to fight against his tormentor. Nothing changing that. Still, the youth was going outside. He was ready to take that fight because Seifer was beside him.

On some invisible command they stepped forward. The moment before they started to struggle with the wall Squall had created, gut-wrenching doubt overcame Seifer. What if he was wrong? What if there was something he should have done differently? Were they really in the Shumi tribe? That last thought made him shiver and shake his head.

Focus. No time for stupid feelings or doubt.

Once he had past some barrier, Seifer felt like he was sucked out. He came out on the other side, he knew. But it was black and he didn’t even see a tail hair from that lousy GF. Damn. He had hoped that if he just got the brunet out of the shell, Griever could take them back.

“It’s dark.” Seifer looked at the pale brunet. Somehow Squall seemed to shine in the dark. Like a faint luminescent light.

“Yeah, and no Griever, but don’t worry. We’ll find our way,” he assured.

Squall nodded but didn’t seem to quite be with him. They started walking. Seifer didn’t know who was leading, if anyone of them were. It didn’t take long until Squall stopped. Seifer flinched when a ghost image suddenly flew by them. It was like when Shiva and he had walked through all those memories, except that it was the memories flowing through Squall and Seifer. They were standing still but the memories flew through them in the blink of an eye.

“Squall?” The brunet didn’t respond and the memories started coming faster and faster.

Suddenly Squall started walking, and separated. Seifer didn’t believe what he saw when five identical Squalls separated from one and everyone walked into different memories.

“Squall!” Seifer started running after the one Squall that continued walking straight forward.

It didn’t matter how fast he tried to run, he didn’t get closer. More Squalls separated from the one and walked or ran away to different images. Seifer sucked in a sudden breath when it felt as if a giant squeezed his midsection and dragged him backwards. He could do nothing as he was sucked away and everything became black.

*****

He was burning and still so cold his teeth clattered. Seifer gasped for breath and for a while he though he was falling until strong hands shook him.

“It’s okay. Here, drink this.”

A cup with something hot and steaming was put to his lips and he drank. He fell into a coughing fit that made all senses and feelings fall into place. He felt the rough stone under his back, the slimy substance on his body from the pool. He didn’t feel fingers or toes from cold however. And he recognised Rinoa’s gentle face at last.

“Welcome back Seifer,” she smiled softly and offered the cup with the strange liquid again.

A blanket covered his naked form and he looked up into baby blue eyes.

“Whoa, you look like shit.”

“Chicken-wuss…” Seifer smiled even as his voice was hardly recognisable.

Zell actually smiled at the unflattering nickname.

“He’ll be okay,” the martial-artist said and punched the air. Obviously he was too hyper to stand still and started jumping at the place.

A little shumi came up to them and gave Rinoa another cup with steaming liquid. For a decent amount of time, Seifer just lay there. He didn’t know what had happened and just now didn’t care. Rinoa was silent and only tried drying his hair and force the warm liquid down his throat. There was other activity a little way beside them. Seifer squinted his eyes in the direction and got a glimpse of brown hair.

“Squall?” In a flash memory surged back. Like a dream.

The Elder was by the brunet’s side and… Laguna.

“Squall!” the blond tried sitting up, but everything just shook and shivered.

“Calm down, Seifer. You can’t do anything right now,” Rinoa tried reason with him.

He shook her off but couldn’t more than sit there. The brunet didn’t look anything as Seifer remembered. Squall’s ribs, hips and shoulders were pointing out. Not at all as muscular and covered with flesh as Seifer remembered. He was sickly pale and his face hollow.

The Elder used both warm potions and some sort of magic on the youth. Still, Squall didn’t wake up. He didn’t even move a muscle in sleep. The Elder finally wrapped the boy in a thick blanket and Laguna cradled the body. Ice had clamped down around the stomach and chest area in the blond. A cold sensation he had never felt. Surreal. The Elder came over to them and Seifer could just stare into those black eyes.

Had he done something wrong? Was Squall…? Had it been too much on the boy? Was he…? Hadn’t it worked? Hadn’t Squall become sane again? Wouldn’t he wake up again?

“It’s as it should be, child of Ifrit. Lion Cub only needs lots of rest,” the Elder said calmly and actually gave something akin to a smile.

It took Seifer a long minute before the words gave meaning. And when they did, something broke inside of him. A tension he hadn’t even realised what it was. Fear for another person’s life. A person he loved more than he had even known. The blond couldn’t help the tears at the moment, or the excruciating exhaustion that almost put him in some sort of apathy.

Squall would be all right.

The End

Author’s Note:
And, at last, after a whole year! We have the end to this story.
It is a huge relief to finally being done with this monster.

I want to thank all of you who have endured during this time and given me encouraging words time and time again.
Without all your support I don’t believe this could have been done.

(P.S
I'm off on vacation for the comming month. A reason to why I posted this chapter and made it the end. Just maybe I'll satisfy myself by doing something more with the boys in this epic story, but I'm realy realy glad this is over with;)
