Chapter 28
Dark eyes stared at the brightly lit moon, Sin noting that it was roughly two hours before dawn. Things had taken longer than expected but he couldn't say that he was upset. After all, he had been given no time constraint. He needed to get back soon though. Being left on his own without orders was not sitting well, particularly since the others seemed set on making it impossible to shut everything unnecessary out like before. 'We have failed him. Our first Master worked so hard to make us perfect but now...'
A rustle drew Sin's attention, bringing his gaze to the curled bundle of black leather, pale skin, and silver strands at his side. The Remnant had fallen unconscious and now lay peacefully unaware of the dark scarlet gaze studying him. 'I trust you.' Those words echoed in his memory. Twice this strange creature had said those words, both times with complete honesty and conviction. Twice these seemingly small words had made him pause, causing him to falter just as he seemed to find a way to set the man in a proper category in his mind. His first Master had taught him to set other beings into three classifications; Master, Human, and Prey. Master was above all things, the only being he would answer to and guard with his life. Humans were something to be disregarded. They were not worth his energy unless they threatened Master's well-being, then they automatically became Prey. Prey were to be killed quickly, unless otherwise specified by Master.
This slender man, however, had no place in any of those three categories. Seemingly needed by his current Master, the young Remnant was certainly not Prey but he was shown enough favor to be trusted beyond that of Human.
'YOU THINK TOO MUCH, SERVANT.' The demon chuckled. 'HAVING DIFFICULTIES WITH THE SHINGA-CHI? STRANGE, ISN'T IT, THAT EVEN UNCONSCIOUS HE STILL MANAGES TO DISTURB YOUR WAY OF THINKING, COWARD.'
'Why do you call us a coward, demon? Is it simply that we follow the orders of another?'
Chaos gave a low growl. 'NOT AT ALL. YOU FOLLOW THOSE THAT HAVE NO RIGHT TO LEAD YOU. YOU WILLINGLY GIVE YOURSELF TO THOSE THAT ARE WEAK, THOSE YOU COULD KILL WITH A SINGLE SWIPE, JUST BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT YOU ARE TRAINED TO DO. YOUR TRUE MASTER IS SOMEONE THAT YOU SHOULD WANT TO FOLLOW BECAUSE OF WHO HE IS, NOT THE DAMNED EQUIPMENT HE WEARS.'
'Would you both shut the hell up? It will be dawn soon and we...damn it, I mean "I" am tired. I imagine there won't be much rest at camp once the sun rises.'
Sin smirked at Vincent's slip. Soon enough things would be quiet in his head again. It wouldn't matter what Chaos had planned, once the gunman was absorbed, the demon would soon follow. 'After that, your weakness will be purged from us.' He stood then and reached for Yazoo's sleeping form. It was time to return to Master.
~
'I am Vincent Valentine. I am my own master, not a slave. I am an individual, not the combination of several. I am a human being, not a monster.'
These thoughts were repeated over and over, becoming a mantra for the gunman. The last part had been strange when he noticed he had added it. Now that he remembered what he had done and been forced to do when he was collared, he knew in his heart he was not the monster he had been. 'But I could very easily become one again if I let him win.'
It was ironic, in a way. His friends had spent the last few years trying to tell him that he was not a monster, but he had always avoided them and distanced himself from them because he didn't believe them. Now that he was forcefully torn from them, he came to realize their words were true.
Vincent watched as Sin silently entered the Remnant's camp. It was unnerving, watching what his body did like it was a movie. The form may look different, but it was still his body. Everyone thought the demons showed their true forms when they took over, but in all actuality, it was a perfect blend of the gunman's human form and their demonic bodies. He didn't know what they truly looked like so all he could see in his mind were their shadowed shapes and glowing eyes. He could feel the golden gaze of one watching him intently even now.
The demon watched him constantly, ready to step in immediately if the gunman faltered for even a second. Any time that Sin would get a firm hold, Chaos would speak, distracting and confusing the slave long enough for the human to pull himself together. Still, it was strange and suspicious the things the demon would say. He seemed to be hinting at something that both he and Sin were missing. Something that seemed to involve Yazoo.
Vincent had watched the entire night, part of him wishing he could simply turn away, another part of him wishing he was the one in control and making the silver-haired man moan and writhe so wantonly. As he watched though, a small quirk caught his eye, something that Sin had been too focused to notice. At each climax, a strange glimmer would appear for less than a second on Yazoo's chest and it seemed to be where Chaos had left his mark. The bastard was up to something, he knew it. He played his part though, showing only distrust and hatred for the demon that shared this dark void they had been cast into. It helped to keep Sin from delving too deeply into his mind. He kept what little he knew locked so deeply inside that he hoped it would take nothing short of full absorption to get to it.
The gunman shook his head as Sin looked from the tent to the sleeping figure in his arms. He knew they were not allowed to enter without his Master's approval but he did not know what to do with the Remnant. He let loose a wave of irritation as Chaos spoke up. 'KEEP HIM IN YOUR ARMS. YOUR MASTER WILL KNOW THAT YOU FOLLOWED HIS ORDERS WHEN HE WAKES UP. BESIDES, IT WOULDN'T DO FOR THE LITTLE SHINGA-CHI TO FALL ILL BECAUSE YOU LEFT HIM OUT IN THE COLD. YOUR MASTER MIGHT BE DISPLEASED IF HE TRULY DOES NEED HIM.'
For some reason, the slave seemed to agree with this and sat on the ground, cocooning himself and the Remnant within his wings. Vincent gave a sigh, perhaps now he could get a little rest as well.
~
He was worried. Truly, for once in his multi-millennia life, he was actually afraid that he might not win. Would he admit it? No. The day that Chaos admitted defeat would be the day he ended his own life.
'MIGHT NOT BE SUCH A BAD IDEA AT THIS POINT.' The demon grumbled spitefully. He saw the gunman glance at him and felt a wave of nervousness from the human. He knew that Vincent could tune in on his thoughts if he tried but, with their current situation, he refrained from doing so very often. Thankfully they were lucky enough that Sin had not absorbed that bond yet. 'DON'T WORRY ABOUT ME, HOST. I HAVE MORE PRIDE THAT TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT. BESIDES, THAT BASTARD SCIENTIST MADE IT NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR THIS BODY TO BE KILLED ON ITS OWN. I WOULD HAVE TO GET AT LEAST ONE OTHER TO HELP ME AND I DON'T THINK WE HAVE ANY VOLUNTEERS.'
The gunman rolled his eyes before relaxing back into a meditative state. It was the closest thing the human could afford to sleep anymore. Chaos looked over the curled form nervously. The gunman's mental image no longer looked as it should have. He was slowly beginning to take on Sin's form. Already his human hand was gone and the pointed golden shoes. The demon knew that once Vincent fully took on Sin's body, he would be absorbed and lost. It looked like he would have to activate a small part of his plan early if there were to have any hope of staying alive long enough to escape when the opportunity arose.
Strange, that one such as he would be so dependent on a human. Yet Chaos could not say that he hated the gunman anymore. Though it had taken him a while to admit it once he had fed enough to regain his mind, he found that he held a certain respect for his human host.
He waited silently for several moments as Sin drifted into sleep. After he was sure that the slave was far enough into unconsciousness, the demon moved quickly but cautiously. It wouldn't do for Sin to know just what now lay within a certain silver-haired man but he knew he could not wait for another opportunity. Not if Vincent was to survive much longer.
~
He blinked slowly as something pulled him from his meditation. Red. He saw a wall of red in front of him. A movement shifted in his arms and he looked down to the sleeping figure in his arms. Vincent nearly let loose a shocked gasp but quickly caught himself just as Chaos whispered in his mind. 'DO NOT DRAW TOO MUCH ATTENTION. SIN CANNOT KNOW THAT YOU ARE OUT.'
The gunman nodded slightly but he was curious as to why he was now in control and why his mind felt more alert than it had for the last twenty-four hours. 'PULL BACK HIS COAT AND LOOK AT THE SHINGA-CHI AGAIN, HOST.' He did, his scarlet and amber eyes widening when he saw a golden thread slowly drifting from a strange glowing mark Yazoo's chest and into his body. 'Chaos? What's going on?'
'I'M JUST BORROWING SOME UNUSED ENERGY. I CAN'T GIVE YOU TOO MUCH RIGHT NOW OR THE SLAVE WILL KNOW SOMETHING IS UP. I WILL STORE WHAT I CAN AND FEED IT TO YOU SLOWLY. IT WILL MAKE IT A LITTLE EASIER TO WAIT AND KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR THE CHANCE TO ESCAPE.'
Vincent had to agree that it was the best plan in this situation. He hated that he would have to wait longer but right now they were still powerless. He turned his attention again to the slender figure. A part of him was angry and hurt from the Remnant's betrayal. Yet he couldn't find it in his heart to truly blame the younger man. Jenova, the one they called Mother, was very persuasive and her call and so-called love could be next to impossible to deny. In the labs, her voice would have been the only kindness they found.
Almost as though he heard Vincent's thoughts, Yazoo's blue-green eyes fluttered open and he stretched. As he met the scarlet and amber gaze, his shocked gasp was cut off with a metal claw clamped over his mouth. The gunman whispered harshly, "Do not make any loud noises or sudden movements or I will kill you, understand?"
