Chapter 29
Yazoo fought as his body began to climb into consciousness. His mind was basking in the rare feeling of security and warmth and did not want to leave it yet. However, a ticklish sensation, like a soft breeze, kept running across his chest and finally annoyed him into wakefulness. As his eyes fluttered open, he stretched, relishing in the utter relaxation of his muscles that only came after a really good round of sex. Immediately he recognized that the makeshift wall around him was Sin's wings. The red, leathery appendages provided enough insulation for warmth but a small opening at the top kept it from getting uncomfortable. The night sky was visible through the hole and there was a faint flickering light from the small fire. 'We must be back at camp.'
The Remnant felt the eyes watching him and turned to offer a greeting but froze before he could say anything. Instead of the expected cold black and crimson of Sin, he saw the wary scarlet and amber of Vincent Valentine. A golden clawed hand clamped hard over his mouth before the shocked gasp could escape him. His eyes widened even further as a harsh, cold whisper reached his ears. "Do not make any loud noises or sudden moves or I will kill you, understand?"
Yazoo remained frozen and silent for a moment before he realized that Vincent was waiting for a reply and gave a slow single nod. As the golden appendage was pulled back, he gently took hold of it. When it was not immediately removed from his grasp, he studied it curiously. The claw fascinated him and he had not taken the time to really look at it earlier. Though the lighting was dim, his Mako-enhanced vision could see the jointed metal clearly.
Long, slender fingers trailed over the cool metal, memorizing the dips and curves of the smooth planes. The Remnant paused when he came to a section of thick black fabric on the inner wrist. Rather than feeling the expected hard wires of a cybernetic appendage, the area felt warm and soft, a subtle pulse recognizable by his sensitive digits. 'So there IS something under that.' A sharp intake of breath caught his attention and Yazoo let go when he saw a flash of something similar to pain on Vincent's face. "Sorry," He whispered softly.
Scarlet eyes met his gaze as a dark eyebrow raised, "For?"
The Remnant opened his mouth to speak, then paused. He realized, with a sharp pain in his heart, that there was a lot that he wanted to apologize to this man for. He turned his head away as he brokenly whispered, "For everything. No one should be caged or collared, I know from experience. But Mother said that we had to, that we needed you to make things work."
"I guess that means the story you gave me about Jenova leaving you was a lie then?" Vincent asked, anger clear in his tone.
"I don't lie!" Yazoo hissed, his eyes narrowing as he met the gunman's gaze, "I may refrain from speaking the truth but I never lie."
"Then what was it?"
Yazoo stared into the glowing scarlet and amber depths in silence, reading the anger and hurt that was so clearly visible. Why did it matter so much to the gunman? It was in the past, nothing he said now was going to change it, right? He closed his eyes and gave a sigh, if that was true than what would it hurt to tell him? "I was...misinformed. I believed that since I could no longer hear Mother, that Loz could not either. He simply played along, I guess."
"So you don't hear her?"
Silver hair swayed slightly as the Remnant shook his head, "No. I can't hear her anymore. Apparently I was born more of a failure than I thought. Mother...dies in me, she can't afford to use the energy to keep herself active."
Vincent let this information sink in as he heard Chaos fighting to keep from laughing. 'PERHAPS WE HAVE MORE OF A CHANCE THAN I EXPECTED, HOST. APPARENTLY THE LITTLE SHINGA-CHI'S POWERS AREN'T QUITE AS DORMANT AS I THOUGHT.' Though curious, the human let it go without asking. Too much information could be a bad thing at this point. It was going to be hard enough to hide this little outing as it was. He looked into sad blue-green eyes and felt a surprising need to comfort the slender man, despite his anger. Before he was even aware of what he was doing, he raised a golden clawed hand to the long, silver hair, slowly running the metal fingers through it.
Yazoo tensed at first when the cool metal brushed his scalp, but soon found himself melting beneath the surprisingly gentle movements. He gave a small sigh of pleasure and allowed himself to relax. As his mind began to reach a familiar calmness, he realized he could still feel that ticklish sensation on his chest. He glanced around as he unconsciously rubbed the spot, trying to locate the source.
"Something wrong?"
"Hm?" Yazoo turned his attention back to the gunman, "Oh...no. Not really. Just trying to figure out where the breeze is coming from. I'm probably just too tired or relaxed I guess." A dark eyebrow raised at him questioningly, "Remember how I told you that one of my failures in the lab was physical oversensitivity? Well, if I relax too far my control over it slips. More than likely, I am just feeling your breath on my chest."
Vincent gave a silent nod though he noticed that the 'breeze' Yazoo felt ran along the same line as the golden thread of energy emanating from Chaos' mark. Turning his attention inward, he questioned the demon. 'He doesn't see it?'
'NO, HOST. IF HIS ABILITIES WERE FULLY ACTIVE, HE WOULD. ONLY AWAKENED SHINGA-CHI AND THOSE WITH DEMONIC ENERGIES CAN SEE THAT MARK RIGHT NOW.'
The gunman felt a small amount of relief, he was glad he didn't have to come up with a plausible explanation for the glowing mark. He gave a quick glance upward, noticing that the dark night sky was beginning to lighten. 'Knowing Sin, he will probably awaken with the sunrise to make sure he is available for his "Master." We need to finish up.'
The golden light faded back into the pale skin. 'AGREED BUT YOU BETTER FIND A WAY TO CONVINCE THE SHINGA-CHI TO NOT MENTION THIS AND RETURN TO SLEEP AS WELL. THE SLAVE WILL FIND IT SUSPICIOUS IF HE IS AWAKE BEFORE HIM.'
Vincent gave an inward groan and eyed the silver-haired man. Yazoo was laying contently in his lap, eyes closed and head turned slightly towards him as the metal fingers continued to brush through the soft, silver strands. A sudden image flashed in his mind of another laying so trustingly within his embrace and long, silky, brown hair moving through his fingers. An old ache awoke in him, a part of him long ago buried, as he noticed the resemblance between the young Remnant and his old love. 'Lucrecia, your son is so beautiful and has so much of your spirit. I wish he could have known you and your gentle nature so perhaps he would not have been so twisted by the cruelty of the labs. At least he had your lullaby to help him. If only I could have saved you, maybe none of them would have played out the fate they were given.' He was unaware that a soft, mournful sigh escaped him.
Yazoo turned his eyes upward at the pained sound and was overwhelmed by the depth of sadness and guilt he saw in the scarlet and amber eyes. He reached up, brushing his hand gently over the soft cheek. The gunman stiffened momentarily in surprise but soon relaxed and closed his eyes as the warm caress gave some relief to his aching heart.
The Remnant brushed several strands of dark, multi-hued hair back and couldn't help but admit that he found the gunman beautiful. The scarlet eyes opened slowly and Yazoo felt his breath hitch. The pain was still there but now there was a desire to trust and something warm and unfamiliar to the silver-haired man swimming in those alluring depths. Before he realized what he was doing, he leaned upward to brush his lips over the dark haired man's own.
Vincent was surprised and froze at the light contact. Yazoo leaned back slightly to look at the gunman with nervous and unsure blue-green eyes, afraid that he had pushed too far. He dropped his gaze and whispered sadly, "I'm sorry."
Something that had been pulled tight in Vincent snapped. Shifting his golden hand to cup the back of the Remnant's head, he pulled the pale face to his own and placed a firm kiss on the warm lips. Yazoo's eyes widened in surprise but soon closed in pleasure as he wrapped his arms around the gunman's collared neck. A soft tongue traced along his lower lip, asking permission that the slender man quickly gave. Strangely, some small part of himself compared this to the harsh, claiming kiss Chaos had given him. Whereas the demon was forcefully controlling and commanding, the gunman led a subtle dance of dominance that caused the Remnant to melt.
Vincent opened his eyes and released the younger man, searching the dazed blue-green gaze, "I must go back now. Can I trust you to keep this a secret?" Yazoo gave a soft nod though he felt he did not deserve the dark haired man's trust, "Thank you. Go back to sleep now, you will need what little time you have to heal and replenish your energy."
The long haired Remnant nodded again and gave a small yawn. A smirk crossed his face as Vincent softly kissed his forehead and he lay back comfortably in the warm lap. Soon he found himself drifting back into a familiar darkness, his body and mind at peace.
~
Several feet from the makeshift red cocoon, silence reigned within a small tent. A glowing jade held a cold satisfaction as a cruel grin appeared on Sephiroth's face. 'This is just too perfect. Sleep well my pet, you have long days ahead of you. Soon enough, nothing will distract you from your Master.'

A/N: Dun dun dun! Evil suspense! Sorry for it taking so long to get this out. Writer's block sucks. Finally my Vincent muse broke through it! Hope you guys like this one.
On a side note: Frizzy should not read fanfictions that are not based on Final Fantasy right now! I currently have THREE crossover ideas though only one right now has real substance for a storyline. LOL I love it that Vincent is so capable of being placed in any scenario but it also makes it difficult to focus on the current story that needs finished.
