Chapter 3
Squall used his left hand to wipe his forehead and stole a glance from his wrist-watch. 9:30 am. Seifer was fashionably late. Like the good SeeD cadet he was, Squall of course had arrived in time, so now he was cleaning the lobby alone. Just when he was about to go complain to the Garden Faculty member supervising the punishment, he saw Seifer appear from the Dormitory hallway. The older boy was walking with a slow pace, hands stuffed into his army green shorts.
“Yo.” Seifer gave a nod and smirked as he saw the annoyed look on Squall’s face. “I’m not late, am I?” he asked, knowing perfectly well that he was supposed to arrive half-hour ago.
“Shut up, Seifer. You know you are.” came Squall’s annoyed answer.
The Faculty member soon joined them and walked straight to Seifer. “Cadet Almasy, why are you late?”
Seifer yawned and stretcout out his arms. “The dog ate my alarm-clock.”
“Impertinent as ever, aren’t you, Almasy? Besides, no animals are allowed inside Garden. A punishment will ensue. You want to tell me more about this ‘dog’ of yours?”
“Dog? What dog? Did I say dog?” Seifer laughed nervously, giving the Faculty member an innocent-looking grin.
The man merely sighed, used to Seifer’s attitude, and handed him a simple mop and a bucket. “Get to work. I want to be able to see my reflection in this floor by noon.”
Seifer eyed the huge lobby, a frown spreading to his face. “What!? I gotta clean this whole place with this!?” he exclaimed, waving the scruffy-looking mop with his hand. “What happened to the neat little cleaner-thingy?”
“It was broken last night... You wouldn’t happen to know anything about it, would you, Almasy?” the man asked, suspicion in his voice. Seifer swallowed as he saw the man before himrow row his eyes.
“Not a thing, sir.” the blonde lied with a straight face. He received another suspicious look from the Faculty member, but finally the man left them and returned to his post.
“Sucker...” Seifer smiled as he watched after the man. Squall just rolled his eyes and continued to empty the trash. He wished Seifer would just stop the bullshit and do his part. That way the punishment would be over faster and Squall could get back into the quietude of his own room.
Seifer turned to look at Squall and simply watched him work. He knew the younger boy didn’t enjoy the situation at all, and that it was Seifer’s fault that Squall, too, had to spend his first days of summer holiday doing shitty work like this. Seifer felt the tiniest tinge of guilt, but it was surpassed by the satisfaction of getting to spend the day in the same room with Squall. Now he had a chance to get the boy’s undivided attention, and this time he didn’t even have to uss Gus Gun Blade to get it. Cid had been right. Seifer was constantly picking fights with Squall these days. And there was a reason.
For almost a year now, Seifer had had feelings for the younger boy. Romantic feelings. At first they had caused confusion and Seifer had tried to deny them. He had always felt passionately for Squall, but before, the feelings had always been negative. Passionate hatred. Passionate jealousy, ever since he arrived to Garden and met Squall for the first time. There was something about the younger boy that caused Seifer to flare up whenever they met. Even he himself couldn’t explain why. Just like he couldn’t explain why his feelings had suddenly changed from strong hatred to an infatuation.
’There’s a thin line between love and hate... as stupid as it may sound.’ Seifer blinked his eyes when he realized Squall was speaking to him.
“Seifer?! That’s unfair.”
“Huh? What do you mean?”
“You’ve been standing there for five minutes, letting me do all the work! Come on, use the goddamn mop.” Squall complained, wiping his longish hair from his face.
“Yeah, yeah...” came Seifer’s reply as he finally began to work. He wet the mop in the bucket and moved it to the floor with a loud splash. ‘All this because of my stupid feelings... Damn, I really need to find another way to get his attention.’ Seifer sighed and glanced in Squall’s direction. new new the younger boy most definitely thought Seifer hated him. His aggressive behaviour toward the brunette really didn’t leave much room for guessing. But it was all Seifer knew. He had been like that ever since he was a kid. When someone said Seifer was a bully, he or she wasn’t exaggerating. Seifer couldn’t remember why exactly did he become like that; a kid who preferred to use mean methods to get noticed. His childhood memories were very hazy and there was only a few things he remembered. But in any case, nowadays it was all an act, just like Squall had said in the Training Center last night. No one could be that much of an asshole for real; and Seifer really wasn’t. But for some reason the bullying also seemed to be the way to have Squall’s attention. The only way to get a reaction from him was to either challenge him or annoy him. And this was the problematic part. How could Squall ever have any positive feelings for a guy who basicalld nod nothing but bully and annoy him day after day? But as long as Squall continued to be the oddly frigid, introvert person, Seifer would have to play the part of the bully.
‘I wish being myself around him was easier...’
Seifer sat down on the bench, next to the trash can Squall was emptying. They had worked for only about two hours, even if Seifer was sure he’d been scrubbing the floors for a decade now.
“This is lame.” Seifer sighed and watched as Squallily ily emptied the trash. ‘He’s so thorough...’
“Come on, Seifer, stop slacking and clean the damn floor. We’ll never get this done if you keep sitting on the benches every ten minutes.”
Seifer rolled his eyes. “You know, you kinda sound like that damn warden-guy over there.” he noted, pointing at the Faculty member farther away. “You wanna check if you can see your reflection in the floor?”
Squall just rolled his eyes and sighed. Seifer was making the already detestable job even harder. As he emptied the trash can, he accidentally dropped the waste bag on the floor, causing some of its contents to fall out.
“Goddam it, Squall. I just finished cleaning up there.” Seifer stood up from the bench, seeing a potential situation for a little tiff.
“Well, just do it again.” Squall spoke as he picked up the waste bag.
“No, you clean it up.” Seifer ad, hd, handing Squall the mop.
“It’s your job, Seifer.” the brunette frowned and refused to take the mop.
“Yeah, but you’re the one who’s fumbling and can’t do your job.” Seifer continued, pleased when Squall finally put down the bag and turned to fully face him.
“Well, Seifer, look there, you missed a spot.” Squall sank to the blonde’s level and pointed at a non-existent spot on the floor. He was already starting to heat up.
“Oh, I’ll show you a spot-“ Before Seifer could finish his threat, the Faculty man intervened.
“That’s it, you two, not another worf I f I catch you talking to each other during the rest of the day, I’ll make a report to the Headmaster, or even worse, NORG, and you’ll both get an extra punishment for disobedience. Now, get to work.” He made sure Seifer walked away and moved to work on another spot, far away from Squall.
The brunette boy began to empty another trash can, still feeling peeved. He was sure he’d seen satisfaction flash on Seifer’s face when the blonde had managed to make Squall angry.
’Maybe I was wrong, maybe Seifer really is nothing but an asshole...’
