Chapter 2 - The Junon Rebellion

A crack of sunlight shone through the unshielded windows and fell upon the face of a slumbering Tifa Lockhart. It was several hours past dusk, but Tifa and her companion, Yuffie Kisaragi, no longer had any reason to wake up at the crack of dawn. They were simply out to try and do what they could for the world, now. There was no more crisis, and no more crisis meant no more early wake-up calls.
Tifa’s eyes felt firmly glued shut as the beam of light forced her to attempt to unseal the tight grasp sleep held on her. She yawned quietly and rolled over onto her left side in an attempt to get back to sleep.
Yuffie had awakened only a short time earlier than Tifa, but it was earlier enough that she had already shrugged off the grogginess that was wrought by her long slumber. She knew she was in love with the brawler, and had been for quite a while, and up until now, Cloud had been an obstacle- no a wall- to her. She still wasn’t sure that Tifa would want to be with her, especially not this soon after Cloud had let her down, hell, all odds were against it. Odds aside, she had that which was both salvation and despair, she had hope. This was why she was able to remain in bed, resting calmly as she watched Tifa slowly awake from her own bout of sleep.
The fighter stirred a bit more, returning to her position on her back, stretching her arms up over her head, innocently letting her bare chest peek out from underneath the tight covers as she lay her arms down flat against the surface of the covers. She opened her mouth a bit wider this time and let out a louder yawn, one that said it was time to get up, although it was against her own wishes. Yuffie took special notice of that yawn, or rather, special notice of the cute expression Tifa bore on her face as she made that yawn.
Tifa wriggled around a bit more as the current time won the battle between the urge to sleep and the need to sleep and the wish to awaken, wiping the last remnants of slumber away from her eyes. She sat up slowly, and blinked a few times, looking slowly around the room, and then at her already-awakened friend.
Yuffie giggled quietly and smiled at Tifa, “Mornin’ Sleeping Beauty. I’m guessing you didn’t have too much of a problem sleep-wise last night,” she said with a wink.
The brawler nodded, “Yeah, I slept just like a baby… Glad I didn’t have any… uh… unpleasant dreams, I guess I owe you a lot for helping me out when I was down yesterday.”
The ninja shook her head from one side to the other slowly, “Nah, I already told you, you’re my friend and I just didn’t want to see you hurt…”
“Thanks again, all the same,” replied Tifa, “Anyhow, I suppose we ought to get ready and head out to Junon.”

After getting dressed and having a short, but enjoyable breakfast at the ranch, Tifa and Yuffie saddled up on two of their best chocobos, Agrias and Alma, and headed towards Junon over the mountains. Luckily enough, both chocobos had been the products of well-arranged breeding, and were both gold chocobos.
In most other circumstances, this wouldn’t have mattered much, but Junon was a good distance away, and was separated from the Chocobo Ranch by a large mountain chain, the likes of which were only passable through a cave guarded by a swamp that housed the Midgar Zolom. Quite frankly, the Midgar Zolom was the biggest pest… it was a giant snake-like creature that thought it fun to pick fights with travelers. In recent times, they had simply bypassed the swamp and mountains by way of airship, but being that the girls had split off from the rest of the group, they didn’t have access to any airship of any kind.
The two departed with relative ease and rapid speed, and saw clear over the mountain range within a half hour.
“Gold Chocobo’s the best way to travel after airships, huh?” Yuffie remarked shortly after crossing the cliffs.
“Yeah, if it weren’t for this damn constant bumping and bucking, I’d just about say it’s better,” Tifa said, a bit jittered as Agrias bopped up and down with Tifa aboard.
Yuffie smirked in response and gave an inaudible chuckle, although she seemed to notice her own discomfort a bit more after Tifa brought up the point, “Alright, you may have a good issue there… Let’s hope they don’t slow down anytime soon… Junon’s just on the horizon.”
It was only a few moments longer before they arrived at Junon, and tied the harnesses of their chocobos to a nearby post.
Tifa stretched out her legs once she got off of the bucking bird, finally given respite from the bumpy ride to Junon.
“Alright, just so you know, I’m conscripting Cid to make us an airship as soon as possible. My body is killing me,” Tifa groaned.
Yuffie held her hands out high above her head, and then leaned forward, effectively stretching out her tense back muscles, “You said it… Ugh, so now that we’re here what do we-”
But the ninja was cut off by the loud, husky voice of a short, skinny man with short, brown hair in a first-class SOLDIER uniform standing on the highest building in the rural section of town, “Now is the time! Citizens of Junon, come and hear my plea!”
Many people had lined up along the staircase leading up towards the house at the sound of his words, and many more who couldn’t get onto the stairwell gathered around the house to listen to what the man had to say.
“The time is ripe for revolution! We know, now, that Shinra, Incorporated is responsible for the destruction in Midgar, and even events prior to the coming of Meteor! Shinra still thinks that they can control us with Mako energy and their army. Well, I, for one, tear off my Shinra badge in disgust.”
There were loud murmurs throughout the crowd, and many cries of agreement and a few boos (mostly from the Shinra forces which feared being fired).
“Who does this guy think he is, Marc Antony?” Tifa remarked.
The man tossed his Shinra badge into the wind and continued, “Drawing Mako energy from the Planet caused all of this! Shinra wants to continue to simply mine the planet’s lifeblood… Well I won’t let them!”
There were more cheers from the crowd, and it seemed that he had even won over the Shinra employees. After all, how were they going to continue working with a company after that very company had already destroyed the world?
Yuffie snickered, “No, Marc Antony is the one that gets the last word.”
“I guess that’s my cue, then, huh?”
“Yep.”
Tifa ran off quickly and scaled another nearby building, climbing up to the top. She paused a moment to catch her breath when the other man continued his speech.
“Well then, let’s tear down every sign of the Shinra in this damn town!”
“Hold on just a second,” Tifa bellowed, causing the public to do an about face, turning to each other in a mixture of incited rage and confusion.
“Who the hell are you?” the ex-SOLDIER yelled at her.
“Tifa Lockhart, do you mind?” she replied, spurring a moment of calmness as the crowd conversed quietly, until all the voices hushed to hear what Tifa had to say.
“Now as I was saying… Before you go destroying this town that you all live in, maybe you should consider the fact that this is… the town that you live in,” the crowd came alive with voices again as she spoke cooling sense into their angry, heated minds, “Aside from this simple fact, Shinra, Incorporated is not what it once was. The reign of President Shinra and his son, Rufus is over. As many of you probably know, I helped defeat them, personally. I even know the man who is taking control of the Shinra; many of you have probably seen him controlling what you know to be Cait Sith. This man’s name is Reeve, and he’s a good person. Certainly after helping to save the planet, you don’t think he’d go right back to destroying it?”
There was another moment of loud murmuring amongst the crowd before the ex-SODLIER spoke up again, “Shut up! Just because you think you know him doesn’t mean he isn’t still a Shinra dog! It’s a sign of their kind to betray you time after time!”
“You’re wrong,” Tifa responded quickly, the crowd whirling around so fast they could have easily gotten whiplash, “Reeve knows what he’s doing. He’s been pressuring Shinra to stop their illegal activities and to help out the communities they’re involved with.”
“Hah!” the man responded, “How can we trust the words of this obviously mad *woman*?”
“This perfectly sane *woman* knows exactly what she’s talking about. The only thing wrong with you is that you can’t recognize logic when you hear it. Besides, this *woman* could kick your scrawny ex-SOLDIER ass!”
The man leapt off of the roof and into an uncrowded area of the streets, “Well that’s a good thing then, because if you can’t, this city is going to BURN!”
The brawler shook her head in disgust, “Do you see? He’s become exactly what he’s trying to oppose. He tells you that Shinra is going to destroy the cities, but really he’s just making an excuse for him to destroy it himself.”
“Quiet, you! Come on, let’s settle this!”
Tifa walked back to the far edge of the house and dashed towards the end, suddenly pausing when she reached the incline, causing her to slide down a small strip of roofing until she was surfing on air, straight towards the loud man. He looked up with a gasp of surprise as the fighter’s foot flew straight into his face, knocking him down with a loud hit.
The man saw nothing but blackness for a moment, but managed to pull himself back up and moved to draw a knife from his belt, but before he could even wrap his fingers around the hilt, he felt Tifa’s knuckles fly straight into his stomach, taking the breath straight out of his lungs. She grabbed the man’s knife and tossed it to the ground, then jumped a small distance into the air and made a spinning kick towards him, landing a blow straight on his back, causing him to fly into the ground face-first and unconscious.
Tifa turned back to the crowd with the man behind her, scratching the back of her head gently, “So, uhh, I guess that’s all I have to say…”
A few people clapped, but most just walked away, whispering to each other about what had just happened. Tifa supposed that the people would do what they did, but she had done her best to stop any sort of uprising.
Yuffie walked over to the fighter and hugged her tightly, “Nice speech and show. I guess today will be forever remembered as the day you stopped the Junon Rebellion.”
Tifa kissed Yuffie’s cheek as they embraced and giggled a bit, “I don’t know if you could say that much, but I hope I helped a little…” as they released the hug Tifa turned back towards the man and the few people surrounding him, “Uhh… could someone take that guy to a hospital or something?”
Authors Note: FINALLY done with this one... heh. Had the idea for the entire chapter THE day after I finished the previous one, but haven't really gotten off my lazy bum to get this done until the past three days. I'll try not to procrastinate as much with the following chapters. Hope you enjoy, if you don't umm... well I guess that's your fault now, isn't it?
