Steiner has an Anxiety Attack.

***********************

“Alright… I’m going to tell her…” Adelbert Steiner, captain of the Alexandrian Knights of Pluto, stood nervously outside a broad, gold-leafed chamber door. “Yes, I am going to tell her…” he paced once or twice in front of the threshold to the Queen’s chambers, tapped his foot, drummed his fingers on his armor, and then sighed.

“Come on Steiner, get a hold of yourself! The Queen is very understanding, she won’t have me beheaded… or would she..? NO!! No, what am I saying!? I could always rely on the Queen’s dependable ideas and answers. I mustn’t fear… Alright… here goes…” Steiner breathed out a long held breath, reached up, and knocked on the door.

“You may enter!” came a soft, musical voice from within. Steiner’s hand trembled unbidden on the doorknob as he turned it and walked, as casually as possible, inside.

A young woman, around the age of nineteen, was seated at a cherry desk table writing a letter. She had long, flowing Sepia coloured hair which was pinned up beneath a silver, diamond-studded crown that rested proudly upon her head.

“Uh… Queen Garnet… your majesty, uh…” Steiner mumbled, looking at the floor.

“Yes Steiner, what is it?” Garnet turned in her chair to look at him. She wore a beautiful white gown; tumbling trains of silk and lace around her feet. She was a vision with little white gloves on her perfect hands.

“Uh…” he began, “ Queen Garnet, I’m afraid… I have terrible news…” Steiner faltered.

“What is it?” Garnet set her quill down on the desk and folded her hands in her lap, “really Steiner, it can’t be as bad as you make it out to be.”

“Well um… you know that beautiful cake that the master chef made for your birthday? You see, it… had a little… accident.” Steiner fixed his gaze on the carpet.

“What is it that happened?” Garnet feared the worst.

“Uh… Quina Quen was in the kitchens at the time and… he ate it… all 6 feet of it… in one gulp… I’m so sorry your majesty!!! *sob*”

There was a long silence and Queen Garnet burst out laughing, “Steiner! You mean to tell me that all that agonizing was about a cake? Oh, Steiner you need to stop worrying so much, it is quite all right! Just have the chef make another one.”

“Well, my Queen, that’s the trouble. You see, the master chef said that there is no time to make another cake,” Steiner answered.

“Well, that’s alright then. Tell the chef that it was an accident and I do not need a cake. Just keep Quina away from the feast preparations, Steiner,” Garnet dismissed him and went back to writing her letter.

“Yes, my Queen,” Steiner bowed and departed the room.

In the hallway, as Steiner walked to the kitchens to report, he said, “There is no way that Queen Garnet could possibly have a birthday without a cake! I will just have to stretch the truth a little… yes! That’s it. I’ll tell the chef that if he doesn’t have a new, satisfactory cake by tomorrow, then he will be stripped of his title and thrown into the streets. Yes, that should do it. Now, about that Quina…”
