~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CHAPTER 3 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Balthier awoke suddenly as the airship jolted in the night sky. The jolt was followed by a loud scraping sound, and then by silence. Could they have collided with something? If he didn’t know better, the sky pirate would have said it sounded like another ship attempting a landing on the air deck, but he knew that was a risky move no pilot in their right mind would attempt. He laid still for a moment, waiting for some other sign that something was amiss. Although he heard nothing else, he was unable to shake the growing apprehension in his stomach.
The man decided to investigate. After all, at the very least, one never knows when a public airship captain may be in need of a good mechanic. He quickly arose and gathered his clothing. He buttoned up his shirt, tied his boot laces, and returned his gun to its holster.
“What’s going on?” asked Larsa sleepily, rubbing his eyes as he sat up in bed.
“Not to worry, just go back to sleep,” said the sky pirate as he ran his fingers through his hair and strained through the darkness to check himself out in the mirror next to the door.
When the sky pirate slipped out the door, he found the corridors were empty. This wasn’t something entirely unusual for this hour, however, his senses were on alert after passing by the empty concierge desk and deserted shop area.
With more urgency in his step, Balthier made his way to the captain’s control room. On his way, he crossed paths with an airship attendant who had just exited the cockpit. The man’s eyes were bloodshot and he appeared to be unusually nervous.
‘Well, I knew that finding a good flight crew was difficult, but I guess they will hire just about anyone these days, won’t they?’ joked the sky pirate.
“Hello there my fine fellow, would you by any chance be in need of some help?” Balthier asked the attendant politely.
“Ah– no sir. Um, ehhh, everything is under control. Yes, we are experiencing some turbulence, please return to your room,” warned the airship attendant as he pushed past Balthier and scurried down the corridor.
“Well, good evening to you too,” Balthier muttered as he proceeded up the hallway. Whatever was going on here was nothing he couldn’t handle, of course. However, this would be the last time their party would travel anywhere via public airship if he had anything to do with it. From sharing rooms to getting woken up in the middle of the night for god knows what, this public airship adventure was leaving a lot to be desired. At least on the Strahl he was guaranteed to get a good night’s sleep.
Arriving at the control room, Balthier knocked on the door. After receiving no response, he tried the handle and pushed the door open.
“Well, if it is not the infamous sky pirate himself,” rang the voice of Vayne Solidor from across a crowded room of armed Imperial guards. Before the first syllable had escaped Vanye’s lips, the sky pirate had his gun unholstered and aimed at Vayne’s forehead. One Imperial guard was holding the airship’s captain at gunpoint and the sky pirate quickly found himself to be the new target of the remainder.
“Seize him,” Vayne demanded from his personal fleet of soldiers.
Much to Balthier’s dismay, he realized that there was no way out of the current situation. There were just too many guards for one sky pirate to take down at once.
“I see that my reputation precedes me,” grinned the sky pirate as his gun was taken and two Imperial guards twisted his forearms behind his back and into a set of irons.
“I’m glad that you are amused by this,” said Vayne, making his way toward Balthier. The dark haired man glared down at the sky pirate and grabbed his chin, forcing it to one side and then the other. “What I find rather amusing is the company that my little brother is choosing to keep these days.” Vayne’s piercing gaze sent a chill through the sky pirate. He had not seen eyes with such scrutiny and hatred since the day he told his father he was leaving his role as an Imperial Judge.
“Take him to my ship and lock him up,” demanded Vayne as he released his grip on the sky pirate. “The rest of you, find my brother and bring him to me at once.”
