Chapter 3: A Rendezvous and A Memory
When they reached the town, she stopped, looking around for the outskirts where Vincent wanted to meet them. Cloud looked around too, trying to see if he could spot Vincent. Anya finally spotted a figure out of the corner of her eye.
"There he is." She said. She started walking over towards a clump of trees.
Cloud walked with her, he hadn't seen Vincent since the last time Kadaj was around. Anya smirked slightly. "Been a while hasn't it, Vincent?" She said as she crossed her arms. "Yes... Cloud, It's good to see you again." he said, walking a bit closer. Cloud nodded. "It's good to see you too, Vincent." "Sorry if we kept you, but ShinRa wanted to see us." Anya said. "ShinRa needs to learn to not get involved... Kadaj knows now that they have neither, Mother or... their Savor." He said, looking at Anya. "Then you heard them talking? Or rather, were attacked?" Anya asked him.
He nodded to her. "I heard about the attack and went to find out more about it. I overheard Rufus talking with someone." Vincent replied "Any idea who?" She asked him. "His voice didn't sound familiar, and he wore a large black cloak." Vincent said, "Before I could see his face he was gone." Anya looked down, wondering who it could have been. "I've no idea who it could have been that you heard." She said. Vincent nodded. "I figured as much, He has no name to go along with this figure but he seemed to be involved with ShinRa. By how they spoke I think he is putting them up to this." Vincent spoke, Cloud listened as he tried to figure this out himself.
"What do you mean by that?" She asked. "He was telling them almost what to do... He told Rufus to contact you, and he knew Cloud was with you. I didn't think ShinRa would be taking commands from another." He said. "Blackmail?" Anya suggested. Cloud looked at him. "He might have something they need." Cloud said, the Blackmail theory could work but he didn't know what ShinRa would need. Anya nodded slightly but then gripped her arm. "Damn it.." Vincent looked at her. "Do you have anything else that I should know about?" He asked, making sure he knew everything needed. Anya growled slightly. "Kadaj made a new, stronger Geostigma." She said, pulling her shirt slightly to show him her own case.
"We've tried what we could to cure it but nothing worked." Cloud said. Anya frowned as she covered her Geostigma up again. "And I'm worried that Kadaj will try for another Reunion..." "He will need this." Vincent said, revealing the box that contained Jenova's head on his hip. Anya shuddered slightly. "I thought you said you got rid of that... thing." "If I do, then they might be able to complete the reunion." Vincent said, covering it back up with his cape. "You mean... Kadaj turn into HIM again." She said with a fist. He nodded. "If I hold onto this, he'll have a hard time getting hold of it." Vincent replied. "Which might give us more time to stop him." Cloud added.
"One can only hope." Anya said as she held her arm again. Cloud looked at her, he knew she was feeling the pain from the Geostigma. "Don't worry about me." She said slowly. "It's hard not to..." Cloud said. Vincent looked at them. "I'll contact you if I find out anything about our 'friend'." He said, he was going to figure out who the man was. "We'll head back to Midgar." She said. "You have our numbers if you need to call." Vincent nodded. "I'll talk to you later." he said, walking off. "Be careful." Anya said as he left. Cloud looked at her. "Let's head back..." He said, still a bit worried about it. She nodded to him, smiling a bit. "Don't worry about me, ok?" She said. "Trust me, when you're my age, you've been through worse." He nodded. "Alright." He said, starting to walk back. "We should head back and see if Tifa contacted anyone else." "We'll call her later." She said as they reached her bike. Anya started up her bike again, remembering back to when she first joined SOLDIER.
~Memory~
“Well, I will say this, it is rare that a woman decides to join SOLDIER, and actually is accepted too.” Her new commander said. “Cadet Celestina, was it?”
Anya nodded slightly, pushing her bangs out of her violet eyes. “I’d prefer to be called Anya, if it’s all the same.” She said. She wore a pink tank top that showed off her midriff and tight black hip-hugger jeans. Her hair was pulled back into a high ponytail, with was braided tightly and tied off with her red ribbon.
“Well, Cadet, as I said, you’re one of the few females here in SOLDIER. You will be given your own barracks, since we do not have co-ed barracks.” Her commander said. “Sounds like fun.” She joked.
“Lieutenant Rock, there you are.” A deep male voice said from a few feet away.
The lieutenant straightened up and saluted. “General Sephiroth!”
Anya turned and gazed at the man who had called to them. His hair was silver, shimmering like silk in the light. His face was finely shaped, like it had been carved out from marble by the hands of gods. His eyes deep green and slightly cat-like from what she could see. His body, or what she could see of it, was the same as his face. His black leather coat against his pale skin seemed to enhance the image of his finely toned muscles.
Sephiroth gave a slight smirk. “At ease, Lieutenant.” He said, before noticing the young woman beside him. ‘Who’s she… she’s certainly very beautiful.’ He thought to himself. “And, who’s this?” He asked.
Anya gave a salute. “Cadet Anya Celestina, sir!” She said, firmly.
Lieutenant Rock nodded. “She just joined today, General.”
Sephiroth let out a chuckle and took her hand. “A pleasure, Cadet. Or should I call you ‘Anya’?” He asked, kissing the back of her hand.
Anya blushed as he kissed her hand. “What… whatever’s good for you.” She said.
“We were on our way to the medical wing so that we could have her get an examination and see how much Mako she will need injected.”
Anya’s eyes widened at that. “No thanks.”
“Excuse me?” The lieutenant asked.
“I’m not getting anything injected to me.” Anya said firmly. “I’m strong enough as it is.”
“It is a standard requirement in SOLDIER.” He said to her.
“Look, I don’t need Mako injected into me.” Anya argued.
“Can you prove that?” Sephiroth asked her, his voice holding a slight taunt.
Anya frowned and narrowed her violet eyes at the General. “Of course I can. I can hold my own in a fight against anyone.”
‘She’s fearless. I like that. And a good quality for SOLDIER.’ He thought. “Then we shall see if you’re right. Lieutenant Rock, prepare the training arena.” Sephiroth ordered. “If the Cadet wants to prove that she can hold her own in a fight, then she will fight…. Against me.”
Ten minutes later, half of SOLDIER had gathered in the stands around the training arena to see the new, female cadet face off against the legendary General Sephiroth.
Anya crossed her arms. “Name your game.” She said with a smirk.
“A one-on-one fight. Any weapon of choice. The first to score three ‘hits’ to the other will be the victor.” Sephiroth said, holding Masamune at his side. He snapped and a wall opened to reveal various types of weapons to Anya. “Please, choose your weapon. Don’t worry, do take your time.” He said with a grin.
Anya walked over to the wall, ignoring the whistles and catcalls from the soldiers. She examined each of the weapons closely before coming to two finely made katanas. She smiled inwardly and took them from the wall, walking back over to the arena. “I’m better at using two weapons. You don’t mind, do you?” She asked.
((A/N: For best results of the moment, I suggest listening to the Mortal Kombat theme. XD ))
“Not at all. It only adds to the fun.” Sephiroth said, holding out Masamune.
‘His weapon is a katana as well, but its length gives him an advantage for distance. Better try to keep at close range.’ Anya thought, crossing her swords in front of her. “Whenever you’re ready.” She said.
“Gladly.” Sephiroth replied before they both charged at the same time, at equal speed.
The spectators were wide-eyed at this girl’s speed and her strength. Her skill was amazing as well, dodging and matching Sephiroth’s attacks blow for blow.
Sephiroth noticed this as well. ‘This girl is no ordinary woman. Is she even human?’ He thought, his focus dropping for a split second.
‘Now!’ Anya thought, taking advantage of Sephiroth’s dropped defense and slashing his right arm slightly. With her hit made, she jumped back to the other side of the arena, listening to the gasps of the onlookers as she made the first hit in the match.
Sephiroth looked at the cut in his jacket sleeve and noticed a thin red line on his skin. ‘Not only did she manage to hit me, but she cut me as well. She’s no amateur at this sort of thing.’ He thought.
Anya held her katanas up, smirking. “I’m waiting.” She taunted.
Sephiroth gave a slight glare before smirking as well and charged at her again. Anya charged as well, once again matching blow for blow with the famous General Sephiroth. ‘He’s upped his skills, trying to hit harder this time.’ She noticed.
The other soldiers were in awe as they watched. This fight was different. It was almost like the two combatants were… dancing. A dance of blades and a show of swordsman skills.
Anya moved out of the way of one attempt, her eyes locking with Sephiroth’s. ‘Who… is this man?’ She thought. ‘No one’s ever been able to keep up with me for this long.’
“Tsk tsk.” Sephiroth said, finding an opening and slashing at Anya’s leg. “You dropped your guard.”
Anya winced slightly, gaining some distance again and falling to one knee. She hadn’t been hurt that bad, but he’d cut a bit deeper than she’d cut him. She stood up again and grinned. “I’m impressed. But then again, you are a general.” She taunted.
Sephiroth smirked inwardly. ‘This girl, is very different. She’s strong, fearless, and her face is very beautiful. I wonder if her body is just as enticing?’ He readied his sword for another attack, watching her movements and waiting for her to make another attack.
Another five minutes passed, each landing one more hit to the other. The soldiers began making bets on which of the two would win, while others were commenting on Anya’s looks and various parts of her body.
Anya stood on one side of the arena, Sephiroth at the opposite end. ‘We’ve both hit each other twice, so whoever hits the other first now wins.’ Anya thought. ‘I’ve hit one arm, and one leg. The best place to try and hit now, would be his stomach or his chest.’ She thought. ‘Here goes!’ She thought, charging at him one last time, Sephiroth doing the same.
((insert flash of light here))
Anya held her swords firmly as she stood on the opposite end of the arena, having ‘flown’ past Sephiroth to the other end, somewhat surprised. They had managed to hit each other in the chest, at the exact same time. She slowly fell to her knees.
Sephiroth touched the third cut on his chest, noticing that the belts that held his jacket together had been cut. ‘Wait a second… if we hit at the same time in the same place….’ He turned back to face Anya, who shrieked as her top fell off her chest, quickly covering her chest with her arms.
Sephiroth walked over to her, taking off his jacket and placing it around her shoulders. “Here. I didn’t mean to ruin your shirt.” He said.
Anya gripped the jacket around her chest. “Thank you…” She said, blushing slightly. “But what about the fight?”
“It was a draw. We both scored that last hit simultaneously.” He said, helping her to her feet. “But it doesn’t matter. You’ve proven that you do not need Mako inserted into you.”
“I’d like you to take a course next week.” Sephiroth continued. “You’re skill are those of one of our first class officers. I would like to see if I’m right.”
Anya nodded slightly. “Sure. Er, I mean.. Thank you, sir.”
“Please, call me Sephiroth.” He said with a smile.
~End Memory~
Anya pushed those memories out of her mind, focusing on getting back to Edge. ‘I have to forget about those memories.’ She told herself. ‘I have to forget about him…’ She said firmly in her mind. ‘I can’t remember my feelings for him… or it might cost me even more people I care about.’ She picked up some speed, a single tear falling down her cheek.
