Chapter 3

Chapter 3

As soon as she had finished her breakfast, Ritz started back to her room, listening carefully for any sounds that Shara was following. After she knew that she had lost her, Ritz slipped down a hidden pathway and took off. Upon reaching the dead end that the hall led to, Ritz pushed a few bricks, and a large door opened that led outside. The second that she stepped into the sunlight, she could see a shadow looming from the roof.

“That was very clever,” Shara said, looking down. She jumped, landing perfectly.

“Since it seems that you have no interest in your lessons, how about I teach you something useful?” Shara offered. Ritz, being the adventurous kind of girl she was, couldn’t refuse something like that. “Very well. Then follow me, and I’ll show you some interesting things out in the woods.”

After a short hike into the forest, Shara stopped and pointed to a large tree covered in moss. “This is a special type of moss. If applied to a wound, it will help heal it,” Shara explained, scraping off a small amount. “Smell it. It’s a good way to remember how to tell it apart from other kinds of moss.”

Ritz lifted it up to her nose and inhaled. It had a slightly woody scent, with a trace of mint.

After that, the two of them moved deeper into the woods. Shara would stop every so often to show Ritz some different herb that could be used as medicine. After a while, though, they reached a small stream next to a clearing.

“Lets take a short break,” Shara said, looking around at the clearing. She gathered up some sticks and started a small fire.

“I’ll be right back. I’m going to get something for us to eat,” Shara said, walking away. Ritz walked over to the stream and used her hands to scoop up a drink. She took a few deep gulps of ice cold water. It instantly refreshed her.

Just as she stood up, she felt a pair of rough hands grab her.

“Don’t make a sound.”

She tilted her head back and saw one of the Bangaa standing over her. “My friendsss ssshould keep that bodyguard of yoursss busssy for a while,” he hissed in a low voice.

Ritz knew that Shara would be fine, and started thinking about what she should do herself. (Okay, he’s a lot bigger than me, but I’ve got speed and intelligence on my side). Ritz looked around quickly to make sure that he didn’t have anyone else close by after reassuring herself.

Ritz dropped down to the ground and slipped between the Bangaa’s legs, sliding out behind him. Before he could react, she kicked him in the crotch as hard as possible. The Bangaa dropped to the ground.

“You littlie bitch! I’m going to make you pay for that!” he screamed. As soon as he turned around, Ritz’s sword was pointed at his throat.

“That was very clever of you, Ritz. I guess I could have taken a bit more time with these two,” Shara said as she walked into the clearing, dragging a couple of unconscious Bangaa behind her with a length of rope. When she got close enough, she delivered a swift strike to the head of the Bangaa that Ritz had beaten.

“I think we should go back into town and turn these thugs in,” Shara commented as she undid the rope so that she could add in the last Bangaa.

“So how long had they been following us?” Ritz asked.

“Since we came into the forest. I was waiting for the perfect moment to catch them off guard, and I knew you’d be fine against one of them,” Shara explained as the two headed back into town after turning the Bangaa.

“Princess Ritz, I know how much you enjoy exploring, but you must take your studies more seriously,” said the math teacher as Ritz sat at her small desk with a huge book sitting on top of it. It had been about three days since she and Shara had been out in the forest, and even though Shara was fairly lax about letting her skip some of her lessons, she made it perfectly clear that Ritz would still have to attend them often.

After her lesson was finally over, Ritz came up with an idea, and decided to see if Shara would be willing to go along with it. As soon as she was able to find her, she asked her.

“Sounds like fun. I’m sure your parents won’t have too much trouble with it...after all, I’ll be with you.”

Upon hearing this, Ritz began thinking of some of the things she’d be able to do after getting away from the castle for a few days...
