Chapter 2
Chapter 2
The sound of the knob turning caused the six people in the room to start and tense. Six sets of eyes watched the door, almost frightened. The sound of whispers could be heard and they held their breath. The door burst open and Vincent and Cloud rushed inside. The look of shock that crossed their faced would have made Axys laugh had the situation not been as it was. Cloud’s sword rattled noisily to the floor, and then they could hear the scraping of chairs, as the others downstairs no doubt were racing up to see what had happened. Axys summoned up enough courage to give her friends a crooked smile.
“Just the two men we wanted to see. Nanaki? Could you please keep the others away for a moment? We will explain everything, but right now, we need to speak with Vince and Cloud.” She said, proud that she was able to sound so nonchalant about it.
The fire cat nodded dumbly and left the room, and Axys heard him tell someone that all was well and they’d see in a moment.
Nanaki made his way downstairs to the den and immediately went to Zurui. “We need to have a talk about the Lifestream and its miracles.” He said to the boy.
“How is this…possible…?” Vincent said. He was clearly shaken. He wobbled slightly and rested his hand on the wall to keep from falling.
“Loz, help him.” Yazoo said, watching Loz lead the stunned Vincent to the bed to sit down. Yazoo did the same for Cloud. The blonde remnant had a dazed look on his face and it seemed as though he wasn’t entirely there at the moment.
“What…why are…how…” Vincent said again.
“I…I’m afraid we have some bad news. Jenova is awakening. She…she’s coming back and she’s stronger than ever…Aerith can’t stop her…and neither can we. We have to destroy her once and for all.” She said.
Hearing Jenova’s name snapped Vincent and Cloud from their stupor.
“Aerith and Ifalna sent us back to do just that.” Yazoo finished.
“And how do you plan on doing it? What has to be done?” Cloud asked.
“For Jenova to be completely gone…for good…all who…a-all…” Axys stopped, unable to get the words out.
“All who harbor her cells must die as well, otherwise she still has a connection to life.” Kadaj finished. The six resurrected comrades looked at the floor.
“So…you mean…” Cloud started.
“You’re here to kill us.” Vincent stated, hoping that he was wrong.
“Yes.” Axys whispered. “We have to take you back with us when we go.”
“How long do we have?” Vincent strained, glancing at Cloud.
“The end of summer. She will return on the night of the fall equinox.” Yazoo answered.
“Three months?” Cloud said, the sting of shock choking him. “That’s all we have?”
“What if we refuse to go with you?” Vincent asked, taking a step toward Axys.
She whimpered and struggled to say what she had to. “Then we were instructed to force you in any way we had to.” She said.
Cloud’s breathing became labored. “You…you can’t do this…Tifa…Marlene… Denzel…Zurui’s still so young, and Kagi-“ His ranting denial was cut off by his shock as Axys lunged forward and threw her arms around him, hugging him tightly.
And at that moment, the reason that their friends had come back disappeared into blackness and Cloud was simply clinging to his returned friend for all he was worth. After a few moments Axys tugged herself away from him. She smiled and touched his cheek softly before turning to Vincent.
Vincent stared at his old partner. His mind was racing with the information he’d been given. He should have felt betrayed…but he didn’t…they should have expected this…but did he want to thank her? Hug her and tell her that it was okay that she was there to kill him and another good friend? Tell her that he was glad she was back no matter what the reason?
Absolutely.
His hand reached for her and she let out a happy sob and dove into his arms.
There was a sudden clicking outside the door.
“Vincent? Cloud? Are you okay in there?” Reeve asked without looking into the room.
“Y-yes. We’re fine. We’ll be down in just a moment.” Vincent answered.
Reeve made a small sound of approval and then went back downstairs.
“You should all come down. They will all be overjoyed to see you. We don’t have to tell them why you’re here. Not yet.” Vincent said, pulling away from Axys and seeing the fear in her eyes.
“Come now.” He said again. “There’s someone who’s waited his whole life to meet you.”
Axys took a deep breath and fell into her place at Yazoo’s side. With one final cleansing gasp, the group filed out of Cloud’s bedroom and down the stairs to the den.
