Summary: What better guide to heaven, than an Angel?

Zack sobbed and screamed in fear and terror. Surely, even Hell could not be this painful? What had he done to deserve such pain? Love? Was love such a terrible thing that he deserved to be tortured so violently and cruelly?

He wished they would just kill him. Let him die. He supposed this was part of their plan. Torture and let heal over and over and over until he admitted to anything, including killing Christ Himself. Zack was already on the brink of sanity, called to the edge of the deep, black abyss of madness by pain, fear, and loss.

He was never going to see Angeal again. For awhile, he had dared to hope that his beloved would find him and rescue him. It had almost seemed as much when he was released from the dungeons of the Inquisition. However, when Zack had arrived at the Vatican and had been taken directly to their dungeons he knew he would never feel the sun on his skin again.

At least, not alive.

They stopped for a moment, and Zack panted during the lull in pain. It never really went away, the pain. There only existed different types of pain. He had tasted them all, every type of torture his captures could come up with. He’d stopped even trying to confess to anything when he realized it wasn’t a confession they were after, but his screams.

A sound, a different sound, from what he was used to prompted Zack to open his eyes. It was difficult, as they were crusted closed with dried tears, blood, and mucus. He blinked a few times to focus and painfully turned his head toward the noise.

His breath hitched and came out in a scream of agony and loss. Angeal. The noise was Angeal, who was crying and begging with his captors to lethimgopleaseI’lldoanything.

That was when they started again, the pain flaring bright and sharp everywhere at once. He couldn’t even scream, only open his mouth in soundless, agonized plea.

It stopped abruptly again. Zack turned his head to catch a glimpse of his beloved. Just one last look, before they took him away.

Zack gasped as he watched what could only be a miracle, blessed by the Goddess. The two soldiers that had been holding Angeal were flung back by two huge, white wings that sprung from Angeal’s back. Angeal broke the chains binding his arms and legs with a strength no mere human could possess. And then he was there, holding Zack against his body.

The pain disappeared. He felt whole and right again for the first time in months. Angeal flapped those unstained, perfect white wings, and Zack realized they were rising. Higher and higher they went, but it was as if they weren’t moving at all. He could still see the dungeon and his captors looking on in awe.

He could still see his lifeless, defiled body lying on the table in a heap of torn flesh and broken bones.

Zack sighed in exhaustion and let Angeal guide them. They would be in Heaven soon, he knew. He would let his Angeal guide his soul there, just has he had trusted Angeal to guide him in life.

For, who better to guide one’s soul to Heaven, than an Angel?
