'CHAOS SPEAKING'
~ (Time and/or story focus shift)
* * * * * (Flashback)
Chapter 33
He knew what was coming, he could feel the icy burn of the blade long before his mind was pushed into the physical realm. After all, he had had a front row seat to the fight between the demon and the silver haired Nightmare. His attention, however, was on the sidelines where currently a slender figure sat huddled and terrified. Vincent recognized the signs of one caught in the terror of their own mind and realized something would need to be done soon or the Remnant would end up breaking down.
Yazoo couldn't tell what was real anymore, his memories awakening with frightening clarity. As Sephiroth impaled Chaos on Masamune's blade, he himself felt the icy chill of needles and scalpels, watched as glowing Mako and strange, dark red liquids were injected into his five-year old body. He could hear that horrible voice of his nightmares, "Let's see if this will fix that little strength problem of yours, eh number two?"
* * * * *
The child screamed and cried, promising that he would do better, begging them to stop the pain. He pulled futilely on the heavy leather straps holding his body down. His pleas were ignored as Hojo left the room, choosing to watch the computer readouts and cameras rather than remain as other scientists continued in what should have been routine injections.
The deep cold of the Mako mixed with the fiery burn of the new substance was overwhelming for the young Yazoo, the slender child screaming long after his voice and breath left his body. As the pain began to slowly subside, the boy felt a strange rage and deep searing hunger build inside him. His small body seemed to move of its own accord, breaking the heavy binding that normally held him and his brothers easily. With a speed that his mind could not register, he hurled himself at the three remaining scientists, tearing their bodies with sharp, claw-like nails and ripping at their throats with fangs he had never before possessed. As the bodies fell heavily into pools of liquid only a few shades brighter than what he had been injected with, his narrowed, blue-green eyes focused on the mirrored window on the wall. Surprisingly, he could see through the reflective glass, the deadly rage building to its max when he found the source of his pain. With a scream, he launched himself toward the scientist behind the glass before his world suddenly went black.
~
Yazoo awoke in a steel cage, heavy shackles on his wrists and legs, a thick collar around his neck. Thick chains attached to the bindings held him close to the back of the cage. He wondered how he had gotten there, unsure if his memory was simply a nightmare from the injections. Muffled voices brought his attention to the door outside of his cage and he huddled into the farthest corner as the door swung open.
"Subject one and three had no reactions to the tests. Subject two was the only one to show any change with specimen V-005," Professor Hojo spoke into a small voice recorder as he entered the room, a tray balanced in his other hand. He glanced to the huddled figure, a strange smile appearing on his thin lips, "Ah, so you're awake this time. And how are we feeling this morning, number two?"
No response was given, but the child never spoke to him unless he was being experimented on so Hojo did not expect one. He pulled a chair towards the cage, seating himself out of arm's reach. He spoke into the recorder again, his dark eyes studying the trembling boy, "Subject two seems calmer than the last fifty-six hours. Eye color and pupil dialation appear to have returned to normal and emotional responses are within the expected parameters."
Removing the metal lid from the tray, he slid it under the steel bars. Yazoo warily eyed the food. There was a large glass of water, several bread rolls, and the rest of the tray was filled with raw bloody meat. He reached out to grab the water and one of the rolls but he dropped the bread when he saw his sharply pointed fingernails. He lifted his hand to his mouth, gingerly touching the sharpened canines. His eyes widened with terror as he realized that his memory had been no Mako-induced nightmare. Hojo's voice filtered vaguely through his fright, "Subject still retains some physical alterations to his teeth and fingers though his appetite has returned to normal. Emotional responses indicate little to no memory of the last fifty-six hours. Specimen V-005 may have been too potent. Testing will resume in one week with one of the other blood samples. Perhaps V-002...
* * * * *
The voice and memory began to fade as a low tone caught Yazoo's attention. He desperately clung to the now familiar melody as it was hummed by the voice and he silently mouthed the words to the lullaby. As he became more aware of himself and the current situation, he realized that Chaos was no longer present. Rather, Vincent stood with his head down and eyes closed, impaled on Masamune's silver blade, softly humming the old lullaby as though he was putting himself to sleep.
:On the Angel's wings...:
Sephiroth stared at the gunman with amused disbelief, unaware of the effect the melody had on the young Remnant, "Has your mind already broken, Valentine? Come, cease this foolishness. You and I both know you are stronger than that."
:...I will carry you...:
Vincent ignored him, putting the little energy that he had into concentrating on the melody. He was tired and pain racked his body with every breath. Thankfully the blade had missed his lungs.
:…fear not the darkness…:
Yazoo’s mind slowly pieced itself back together as he calmed his racing heart. He watched with tears in his eyes as Vincent’s blood dripped off the silver blade, a puddle forming under his feet and spreading across the ground.
:…when fear finds you alone…:
Sephiroth’s amusement disappeared as the humming continued and his patience was starting to wear thin. Drawing his fist back, the gloved hand flew at the gunman’s head, cracking across a pale temple, causing the man's head to snap to the side and the sword to push against his bloody chest.
“Fool. Do not ignore me!”
Vincent ground his teeth together, holding back his cry of pain as his body jolted from the impact. He was still for a moment before his eyes slowly slid open, scarlet orbs shining from the Mako that flowed through his veins. He looked towards the young Remnant, catching the attention of wide, blue-green eyes. Sympathy, pain and anger flashed across the young ones features, causing a ghost of a smile to appear on the gunman’s face. 'He should be all right now.'
'GOOD.'
Suddenly a large boot kicked into his stomach and Vincent was sent hurling across the floor, stopping short of the wall by Yazoo. His body arched off the ground as blood welled up into his mouth. His claw weakly grasped at the ground as his other pressed against his wound.
Yazoo winced, moving to run over to the fallen man until a boot collided into his rib cage and knocked him onto his side with a painful crack. Angered jade eyes bore down into his, “So, little puppet, were you actually thinking of helping dear Valentine over there? Without my permission?"
Yazoo’s head dropped, eyes moving to the dark haired man. Blood was everywhere. Already pale skin seemed paler and amber-red eyes were glassed over from pain. Yazoo felt his chest tighten at the sight and his hair fell into his face as he nodded his head. Feeling brave, the young man sent a glare at his ‘Brother’, “Yes.”
Sephiroth scoffed and treaded past the fallen Remnant, “That was your mistake.”
One foot stepped onto the gunner’s stomach and hand, pressing down with most of his body weight, his trademark smirk again showing on his lips behind a veil of silver. Vincent cried out softly, his clawed hand grasping the black boot that was slowly crushing his organs and the bones in his hand, “And it will be his doom.”
Yazoo felt sick as the sounds of wet flesh and snapping bones reverberated in his mind. As one final nauseating pop caused a hoarse cry to escape the gunman, the young Remnant snapped, "Please, brother, stop! Stop hurting him!"
Sephiroth froze and Vincent recognized the expression that briefly touched the madman's face. It was the same look Hojo had gotten when an experiment had gone extremely well. A cold chill ran through him as he realized that he himself was not the true focus of this brutal display. Sephiroth wanted something from Yazoo and apparently he was close to getting it. He tried to speak, tried to stop whatever the Remnant was about to be manipulated into. Before he could though, that infuriating booted foot moved from his stomach to his throat, cutting off his air and voice box.
A mask of anger and annoyance covered Sephiroth's face as he turned his head and pointed Masamune once more at the slender Remnant, "Perhaps you would be more willing to comply then, little one. On your knees and beg for his forgiveness."
Shock, anger, and finally sad resignation flickered across the pale face before Yazoo painfully rose to his knees, eyes downcast, "Please Sephiroth, I beg you. Spare him from this punishment."
"I will, since you asked so nicely. On one condition though. You must follow my orders from now on without question or hesitation. Do I make myself clear?"
Yazoo nodded, biting on his lower lip as he fought back tears. A small cry escaped him as his hair was pulled and he was forced to look into the former General's beautifully cold eyes, "I didn't hear you, little one. Do I make myself clear?"
"Yes Sephiroth."
The silver strands were released and a satisfied smirk appeared on the older man's face, "Good. Now gather the supplies and set up sleeping arrangements in the adjoining cavern."
Yazoo moved quickly, glancing back once at Vincent's prone form. Once the young Remnant had disappeared, Sephiroth allowed a small laugh to escape him, "Weaklings like him are so easy to control once you know the right buttons to press." Jade, cat-like eyes glanced at the panting figure on the ground, "It will be interesting to see the look on his face when you kill him."

A/N: Once again, thank you to Sapph for helping me with this. I may be good at screwing with Vincent's head but I have a hard time beating up on him.
Challenge to my fans to see just how much you are paying attention and how intuitive you are (glares at a certain psychic witch): Can you guess what Specimen V-005 was?

Uh...oh...
Sephiroth's return to destroy Chaos?! Poor Yazzie doesn't get a break does he?
An excellent story from start to finish. It's rare to see a Remnants fic without the constant ranting from Kadaj!
Keep it up. I can sympathise entirely with your writer's block. It plagues me too. I find that if you obsess over the plotline as much as possible some creativity will break through eventually.
Onward to Vincent! I DO hope Sephy has some fun with him ;D
Frizz: I am glad that you like my work so far. I wish I could give Yazoo a break but it doesn't look like it will happen too soon. Obsessing actually tends to get me in more trouble...roomies start getting annoyed and have to pry me away from my notebook and computer.
