A Hint of Fear

Chapter 4
A Hint of Fear

Quistis got herself under control and went to her quarters, just down the hall from Squall's. Her tears dry now, she sat on the couch, absolutely seething. The more she thought about it, the more she realized he'd said it to get a rise out of her, and he had succeeded.

"He's trying to scare me away," she muttered, thinking back on the scene. "Oh, Squall. It's not going to be that easy." She got up from the couch, heading for the shower. She'd start working on him tomorrow, whether he wanted it or not.

Her anger slowly faded as she showered, feeling only sadness for him again. She never could stay mad at him for long, even after the cruelty he just showed her. His words had been meant to hurt, yet deep down, she'd been turned on. That was the closest Squall had ever come to acknowledging her feelings for him, even though what he did was crude.

She'd lost count of how many times she'd fantasized about him, but it was more than just sex. She wanted him heart and soul. A part of her had wanted him so badly, crude or not. The look in his eyes had told her he would have fucked her into oblivion, but there would have been no love in it. Not from him.

She continued to wash, trying not to think about him anymore, but it was hard not to. "Damn you, Squall," she sighed, running her hands over her body as she rinsed. Without even thinking, her fingers trailed down to the course pubic hair between her legs. Memories of him during happier times flooded her mind. She teased herself with her fingers, wishing it were Squall touching her.

She knew the orgasm would leave her unfulfilled, but she needed the release nonetheless. She slowly rubbed her clit in a circular motion, feeling her arousal covering her fingers. She didn't masturbate very often, but when she did, she made it last. She fondled her breast with her other hand, further hardening her nipples.

She let out soft mews and gasps as she worked on herself, thoughts of Squall exciting her all the more. Her back leaned against the shower wall and she spread her legs farther apart before sliding two fingers inside her aroused sex. She fingered herself at a slow pace, breath coming in short gasps.

It wasn't much longer before she felt the heat building up to her nearing climax. Her fingers worked faster now and she rocked her hips against her hand. She moaned his name with the release, just like she always did. And just like always, she was left empty.

Squall awoke early the next day, showering and dressing quickly. It would be the same routine today, at least that's what he thought. He grabbed Lion Heart, after eating a quick breakfast, and headed for the door. He stopped short when he saw Quistis there, apparently in the process of knocking.

"You still here? I thought I'd scared you off," he said.

"Sorry to disappoint," she answered, unfazed by his attitude. "I thought I could join you today. I need the exercise." She put her hand on Save the Queen, that was hooked at her hip.

"Whatever," he said, stepping by her and shutting the door. She took that as a yes and walked with him. They left the Presidential Palace together, both remaining quiet. She kept glancing at him, wishing he would say something, anything, but that was too much to ask. "Guess I'll have to do this,' she thought.

"So, Laguna tells me you do this everyday."

"He should know, he had spies following me." His voice was filled with spite. She watched his profile as he spoke, hoping he would look at her.

"He was just worried about you."

"I can take care of myself. I'm not a helpless child."

"I know that and so does he, but you have been acting like one lately."

"Hmph, whatever. I'm tired of people trying to analyze me." He looked at her then. "If that's what you're doing, stop."

"That's not what I'm doing, Squall. I just miss talking to you."

"Why would you want to? I'm a bastard, remember?" He faced forward again as they walked, but she still watched him.

"Yes you are, but that doesn't change the fact that you're my friend and I happen to give a shit about you." He opened his mouth to say something, but closed it, becoming infuriatingly quiet again. 'Maybe you're getting somewhere, Quistis.' She decided not to push anymore though and remained silent for the rest of their journey.

Once they were at the outskirts of the city, it didn't take long to find a fight. They found a Mesmerize grazing not far off and as soon as it saw them, it ran to attack. It went for Squall and he jumped out of the way, slicing it's back as it passed him. It released an angry scream and turned back, throwing it's blade toward Quistis. She ducked just in time, then snapped her whip, blinding one of the creatures eyes. Squall finished it off, piercing it's body with his gunblade, pulling the trigger. It fell over with a blood curdling scream, trembling slightly before dying.

"Good job," Quistis said, watching him pull a rag out of his jacket pocket to clean the blood from his blade.

"It's not like it's a big deal, it was just a Mesmer......., Quistis, watch out!" Squall yelled and she spun quickly, seeing another Mesmerize as it shot it's blade toward her. She didn't move quick enough and it caught her. She collapsed to the ground with a sharp cry, feeling a burning pain in her left side. Squall ran toward the creature, Lion Heart raised, a look of fury on his face. He killed it with one swipe, beheading it with a spray of blood. Quistis watched in a haze of pain, hoping there were no more around. Squall quickly ran over to her after disposing of the creature, scanning the area to make sure there wasn't going to be another surprise attack.

"Quistis, let me see," he said, moving her hand away from the wound. She heard the fear in his voice and the look in his eyes matched it. To the relief of them both, the cut was shallow. He took another cloth from his pocket and put pressure against it to slow the bleeding. "Here, drink this," he said, handing her a small bottle of healing potion. She drank it gratefully and her pain subsided.

"I'm sorry, Squall. I should have been paying more attention."

"Dammit, Quistis! I thought...... Hyne, when I saw you fall......" He closed his eyes, taking a deep shaky breath. She touched his face and he flinched away. "Lets just get back. You should rest," he said, helping her off the ground, his cold exterior back as quickly as it had gone.
