~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CHAPTER 4 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Balthier found himself in a small cargo room without windows. It was so dark that if it weren’t for the searing pain at the back of his head, it would have been hard to tell if he was awake at all. Somewhere between the airship control room and the Solidor private airship, the sky pirate had sustained an impressive blow to the head. The irons had now been removed, and for that he was thankful. Massaging his wrists, he wondered how long had he been unconscious. Where were the others? He found it quite unlikely that Vayne would leave the rest of his party behind, and he was certain that they too must be onboard somewhere.
But before he could think too much, the door slammed open and two guards marched in. The light was blinding and the sound of their armor rang in Balthier’s ears. Before he knew what was happening, he was whisked off the airship and into a dungeon cell within the bowels of the Solidor palace.
The dungeon was large, the cells defined by bars extending from the muddy floors all the way up to the ceiling. The only light was through a tiny barred window near the ceiling.
Upon his arrival, Balthier saw the rest of his party confined within the adjacent cells. “Fancy meeting you all here,” said the sky pirate to his friends. “I see that Vayne has spared no expense and provided us with his best accommodations,” said the sky pirate sarcastically as he was dumped into his cell before the guards left.
The dungeon was dim, but not dim enough to hide Fran rolling her eyes. His friend’s faces were dismal, like three days of rain. Their clothing was soiled with a mixture of mud and blood. Yes, upon further consideration, he realized that now was not the best time for humor.
“The bars are too thick,” Vaan remarked. Although they had arrived only a short while ago, the teenager had sized up his cell a dozen times over for any possible means of escape. “I don’t see us getting out of here without the keys,” he complained with frustration, taking a swipe at the bars with his fist and then wincing from the pain.
“What are we going to do? I can’t stand this!” whined Penelo. With a hopeless sigh, she slid down against the bars of her cell and gripped her knees tightly. “I’m too young to die…” she whimpered quietly.
“Don’t worry, we will come up with a plan. We must get ourselves free from here,” said Ashe in an attempt to comfort the girl, even though she was feeling completely helpless herself.
Looking around the room, the sky pirate noticed that one of them was missing. “Where is the boy?”
His friends looked at one another. “We thought he was with you?” Fran responded.
“I haven’t seen the boy since I left my room on the airship…” The sky pirate’s voice trailed off. Balthier knew that Larsa may be Vayne’s biggest competitor for their father’s place as Emperor, and felt somehow accountable for the boy’s disappearance. Judging from the worried looks on all of their faces, he could see that his friends felt the same.
Silence hung heavily over the group as the light from the tiny window diminished to darkness.
