Chapter 4: ‘Everything I Do…’
Anya sat by the window, staring out at the city from the top half of Seventh Heaven, where Tifa, Marlene and Denzel actually lived. It had been almost two months since Cloud had found her in Aerith’s church and they’d gone to see Vincent about Jenova. Surprisingly, there hadn’t been any sign of Kadaj or his brothers yet. But Anya took this as a bad sign. It meant that they were biding their time until the new stigma had advanced and infected more people. She winced and held her bandaged arm.
Denzel came upstairs, checking on Anya at Tifa’s request. “You feeling any better?” He asked her. Anya turned her head to face him and gave a nod. “A little. You guys are nice enough to let me stay here.” “We don’t mind. Cloud said you needed to stay somewhere, and we couldn’t leave you at the church.” Anya gave a slight chuckle. “I wouldn’t have minded if you did. I’ve been in worse places than that. At least it has a roof.” She joked. “Can I get ya anything?” Denzel asked her. “I am a little thirsty. A glass of water would be nice.” Anya said. “No problem. Be right back.” Denzel said, heading downstairs again.
Anya had the radio playing softly a few feet away from her. The song that came on the radio was one she remembered. “This song…” She looked down. “It was our song….” She said softly. She remembered back in SOLDIER one time.
~Memory~
“Drink up boys! Tonight’s bill is on me!” Anya called out, already a little tipsy herself from two beers. The rest of the members of SOLDIER cheered for the lady 1st class SOLIDER. It was Saturday night and it was only 19:00. “It’s time to get wasted and get wild!” Another Soldier called out before taking a long drink of a beer. “Get ready boys! Karaoke time!” Anya called out, pushing a soldier onto the small stage and playing a song. The soldier smirked and started singing ‘So Smooth’, the rest of the Soldiers there laughing and getting even more drunk by the minute.
Anya sat down at the bar, seating herself next to Sephiroth. “Come on, General. Let loose. It’s Saturday night, for God’s sake.” She said with a smile. Sephiroth looked at the slightly drunk woman. Her white blouse was unbuttoned at the first two buttons, her black jeans were skin tight, and her ankle high boots seemed to give her a sexy, yet dangerous appeal. Her beautiful golden hair was pulled back into a high braided bun. She wore only a little makeup, some lipstick and some mascara, and had on medium sized silver hoop earrings. What stuck out the most to him was her choker necklace. It was a black ribbon choker with a ruby in the shape of what looked to be a heart with wings.
Anya moved her body slightly as the next guy took his turn, singing ‘I Just Died in Your Arms Tonight’. Anya smiled, taking a sip of her drink, now drinking a sour apple martini. Sephiroth only turned to her. “How much can you drink in one night?” “A lot!” Anya said, giggling. “Don’t worry. I’m still pretty sober right now.” She said, calming herself down. “Come on. I’ll buy ya a drink.” “No thanks.” The silver haired general replied. “Don’t be such a stiff.” Anya said, turning to face him more, the outline of her cleavage a little more visible in the light of the bar. He turned his face away before she could have noticed him blush.
“Just one drink.” He said. “You got it.” She said, turning to the bartender. “Let’s see… something good… How about a Seven and Seven, double?” “Coming right up, missy.” The bartender replied. “I feel like I’m going to regret this.” Sephiroth said, shaking his head. “Relax, Sephiroth.” Anya said, slapping his shoulder. Luckily for her, on a Saturday, even the great General Sephiroth would dress casually. He wore a tight black shirt with a dragon moving upwards towards his chest from the bottom of the shirt. On top of that he wore a light shirt, black with flames around the bottom and the sleeves. His tight blue jeans were fastened by a black belt with a silver belt buckle of an eagle spreading its wings. He still wore his own combat boots however, but Anya thought it only added to the sex appeal of his outfit.
“Anya….” Sephiroth started to say, sitting on one of the stools. “Yes sir?” She responded quickly. “Is it ok... if I ask you about your history? We have almost nothing on you in our records.” He said. Anya bit her lip slightly but sighed. “Well… I left home when I was considered fairly young. Right after my mother was murdered.” She said, looking down. “I’m sorry to hear that.” Sephiroth said, putting a hand on her shoulder. “It’s ok. But at the time, I had a lot of responsibilities that I couldn’t do. So I left to live on my own. I wandered around for a while until I heard about SOLDIER. I had nothing else to do with my life, so I decided to join. And, here I am.”
“Oh, I love this song!” Anya said, sipping her drink, hearing ‘When I’m Gone’ being sung by one of the soldiers. She’d noticed that he was a new cadet in SOLDIER, and had REALLY spiky black hair. ‘I’ve seen that guy before. I think he said his name is Zack…’ She thought. She moved her head slightly to the beat. “He’s not half bad.” She said to herself out loud as Zack sang. “Seven and Seven, double.” The bartender said, handing Sephiroth his drink. Sephiroth took his drink and drank slowly. “It’s not half bad.” He said after tasting it. Anya grinned. “Told ya!” Sephiroth nodded and continued to drink his beverage.
Sephiroth only stared at the woman next to him. ‘She’s no ordinary woman. She’s only been here three months, yet she made 1st class in less than two weeks. And she never had Mako put into her.’ He thought. ‘Who is she? Her speed and skill during our fight wasn’t that of a normal human. Or even a normal Soldier. Her skills were on the same level as mine.’ His eyes of emerald hid a longing stare as he gazed at her. ‘Anya Celestina…. Who are you really, my lady angel?’ He thought.
Zack finished singing and stepped down from the stage. “General, why don’t you go sing?” One of the soldiers suggested. “No, no no no no no no!” Sephiroth said firmly. “Come on! Everyone has to go tonight!” Another soldier said. After a few minutes of the other soldiers joining in, Sephiroth gave a sigh and put his drink on the counter, walking to the stage and looking through the songs to sing. He was a bit surprised himself when he found the song he chose, but decided to keep quiet until the music started to play. He took the microphone and kept his jade eyes on Anya as he started to sing.
“Look into my eyes - you will see
What you mean to me
Search your heart - search your soul
And when you find me there you'll search no more
Don't tell me it's not worth tryin' for
You can't tell me it's not worth dyin' for
You know it's true
Everything I do - I do it for you…”
Sephiroth’s voice was astonishing. No one in SOLDIER even knew that their General could even sing at all. Anya was surprised as well, blushing faintly at his voice and the choice of song.
”Look into your heart - you will find
There's nothin' there to hide
Take me as I am - take my life
I would give it all - I would sacrifice
Don't tell me it's not worth fightin' for
I can't help it - there's nothin' I want more
Ya know it's true
Everything I do - I do it for you…
There's no love - like your love
And no other - could give more love
There's nowhere - unless you're there
All the time - all the way…!”
Sephiroth again placed his eyes on Anya, and this time, it was noticeable to everyone who he was staring at. Anya felt her heart beating faster. As he continued.
”Oh - you can't tell me it's not worth tryin' for
I can't help it - there's nothin' I want more
I would fight for you - I'd lie for you
Walk the wire for you - ya I'd die for you!!!
Ya know it's true
Everything I do - I do it for you…..”
Sephiroth stepped down and walked over to Anya, who was a bright shade of pink. Sephiroth smirked a but and took one of her hands. “That was for you.” He whispered into her ear gently. “I know.” Anya said breathing heavily in shock. “I’d like it… to be our song.” The silver haired general added. He took his other hand and placed it on her chin, slowly bringing their faces together in a soft yet warm kiss. Anya didn’t fight back, but instead returned the kiss, shutting her eyes.
As soon as the wolf whistles and hoots started, the two broke the kiss and turned back to the rest of the Soldiers who’d been watching. Anya blushed deep red while Sephiroth only picked up his drink and smirked some more.
~End Memory~
“That was our song…” She said softly, feeling herself become emotional again. “Here’s your water.” Denzel said, coming back into the room. Anya looked at the boy and smiled a bit. “Thanks Denzel.” She said, taking a drink and pushing her memories away again.
