Chapter Three

Vibrant red silk whispered as it slithered around snowy white flesh like a jeweled serpent with a fiery tongue of ice. The air was warm and silver mist danced all around like phantoms in the bright moonlight. Thunder spoke from the deeper darkness above and its mighty voice rumbled across his glowing skin.

He was surrounded on all sides by fallen and crumbling ruins. His red hair billowed like gathering storm clouds made of fire around his beautiful face. He gazed up at the black sky with eyes carved from the most precious emeralds in the world.

The sound of crumbling stone and dripping water filled his ears. He was all alone in this haunting place and yet he knew no fear at all.

“He has come,” a female voice whispered from all around. “He has finally descended up from the sea.”

Lips fashioned from the most treasured of rubies parted. “Where am I? Where is Tidus?”

“You have come to save us,” a male voice spoke up from the earth beneath his dove white feet. “You have finally come to set us free.”

Phoenix blinked, finding himself in a massive circular temple. The walls, floor, and pillars looked as though they had been carved from darkness itself. Everything shimmered and glistened with a carefully concealed light.

He was surrounded by people size statues and they were carved from precious gemstones and metals. Each of them was carved from a different element. A woman was carved from jade and another onyx. A man was carved from emerald and another sapphire. Another woman was carved from mother of pearl and another from diamond.

He looked to see that two of them were off to the side. It was two men and they looked to be identical twins. The taller of the two was carved from solid gold, and the smaller form was carved from solid silver.

“He is missing his companion,” a darker voice sighed in what he thought was misery.

“He is not complete without his companion,” another voice said.

“Who are you?” He asked, looking at all the beautiful and handsome faces. “What do you mean?”

“We have committed such crimes against the gods,” an even sadder voice spoke. “And Sin is our punishment.”

“What crimes?” Phoenix asked, feeling the living darkness begin to dance. “What is Sin? Where is Tidus?”

“Find your Dream,” a deep masculine voice spoke and it was like gravel being trod upon. “And awaken us all with you divine voice, Singer of Souls.”

Shimmering lights danced from the statues glowing forms, spinning around him, singing their sad melody. His feet were lifted off the floor and his silk flapped out like wings of flame.

“Set us free,” all the voices said at once and it was like a million-million. “Bring us out of darkness and into light, Soul Singer.”

Phoenix saw a shape in the dancing darkness and it possessed the alluring face of a demon. Polished black horns coiled and curled from a nest of golden curls.

“The dead crave your touch,” the demon spoke with the voice of a dying star. “They crave your warmth and your lovely flesh.”

Eyes the color of molten ruby gazed at him with blinding hunger. He knew that face.

“You’re mine,” the demon smiled with sharp white teeth. “Your heart, soul, and body belong to me and only me.”

“Tidus…”

The disturbingly handsome devil smiled with such golden lips. They shimmered and looked so soft and supple. He had to look away because they were screaming to be touched and licked.

“All have sinned,” the demon smirked, floating up on wings of visible darkness. “And so they must be punished by the pain they inflicted.”

Phoenix trembled. He looked just like Tidus, and scary as hell. He could feel the sweet smelling heat radiating from the solid muscular body. It was like a furnace, smothering him.

“Take my hand,” the demon cooed, looking at him now with the eyes that belonged to a goat. They were so blue with dancing golden lightning striking out from the black pupils. “And we shall make this world ours once more.”

“Do not listen to the Darkness,” a child’s voice cried in distress. “He will destroy us all!”

“You tempt me,” Phoenix whispered, pulling his hands away from those golden talons. “But that is not your true face.” He floated back, glaring at him with shimmering emerald stars. “You’re not my Tidus!”

He could hear breaking and everything shattered around him like the glass in a mirror frame, and he fell with the twinkling pieces into a blinding blue light. But, the smoky laughter followed.

“Are you sure?”

The bed was moving and he could feel the radiant warmth of the sun shining down on his face. He slowly opened his eyes, blinking several times, and took a breath as he looked up at the brilliant blue sky above him. The ocean was singing and he could hear the songs of dolphins.

He suddenly sat up and remained perfectly still as his breath caught in his throat. He was sitting on the surface of the water…in the middle of an ocean…with no land in sight.
