--Epilogue--

The sun had barely begun to poke above the horizon. Aeris had finally fallen asleep, a slave to her body’s demand that she relax. While Red had felt himself doze off a few times, he was still too preoccupied to sleep. He had spent most of the night watching her breath, listening to the slightest noises she made while at rest. When he was sure that she was fast asleep, that his movements would not wake her, he made his way toward the door.

I love you, Aeris. And because of that, I know that you know why I have to do what I’m about to do. I’m sorry to have to put you through this.

The door did not creak as he nosed it open. A quick glance out into the hallways revealed that no one else had woken up yet. With a final, mournful glimpse backwards, he pushed the rest of his frame out of the narrow crack in the door he allowed himself. It was no more than a five minute walk to his grandfather’s place, but it felt like a lifetime.

“…let’s go,” Cloud said, summoning everyone who was gathered around the Cosmo candle. “I think everyone who needs to be here is.”

“Yeah,” Barrett said, pulling himself up. “I don’t think he’s comin’ back.” He turned to look up the cliff side, catching the smallest glimpse of the large observatory up top. “He was a pain in the ass anyway. But I am gonna miss havin’ him around.”

“All right,” Cloud nodded, clapping his hands together. “Barrett, I want you to take Yuffie and Cait Sith north in the buggy to Nibelheim. Aeris, Tifa, and I are going to walk. I don’t know what to think about going back to my hometown, and I think the fresh air is going to do me well. I’m sure Tifa feels the same way.” He glanced over to her and saw her nod in agreement. “Are we ready?”

Making their way to the gates of the city, the groups split up in their respective parties and headed out. Cloud had barely made it to the edge of the steps when his ears caught a very distinct sound.

“Hey!”

He and Aeris instinctively turned back at the same time to see Red bounding down the cliff stairs toward them. Aeris’ heart leapt into her throat when she saw him again. Even Cloud could not help but let a smile come to his face.

“Red, what are you doing?” Tifa asked. “I thought you were staying?”

“Grandpa convinced me to tag along,” he said, nodding. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Aeris with a beautiful smile on her face. “He told me I should do everything in my power to help Cloud and the others. Therefore, I’m coming along.”

“Good to hear,” Cloud said, motioning toward the steps. “Run and get a hold of Barrett and the others. They’ll be taking the buggy to Nibelheim.”

Red nodded in agreement and ran past them, bounding down the steps with a renewed gait. As he ran past Aeris, he had to reflect.

I meant what I said, and I’m sorry to have worried you. I’m here now, and I will continue to be.
