Summary: “What is Heaven or Hell, to one with no soul?”
“Forgive me, Goddess, for I have sinned. I have sinned against you, whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Hail Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our Life our Sweetness, and our Hope-”
“What are you doing?” Sephiroth raised an eyebrow at Genesis. The redhead made a picture of pathetic devotion as he hunched over the small alter in his rooms.
“What does it look like?” Genesis scoffed, but his retort lacked true sting. His eyes were defeated, lost. “I am asking the Goddess to forgive my sins.”
Sephiroth snorted. “You still believe that flowery propaganda? After everything?”
Genesis turned his face away. “You know I have always believed in the power of the Goddess, and I have always fought to bring her Power and Glory. After seeing Angeal…” he paused and cleared his throat. “Angeal was blessed by Her. He was given Gifts from the Goddess Herself. We…I…” he took a deep breath and bowed himself over the alter even further. “I have sinned against Her, for what I did.” He breathed in deeply, and his breath came out as a shuddered sob. “What have I done?”
Sephiroth swooped forward from his stance in the doorway and grabbed Genesis by the arm. He shook the smaller man violently. “Stop it. We simply eliminated an incompetent pawn in our plan.”
Limply hanging from Sephiroth’s grip, Genesis looked up through the swath of red hair that covered his eyes. “Angeal was blessed by the Goddess, and we murdered him. You were there. You saw. You saw he was Goddess Touched. And-and that poor boy…” Genesis shook his head. “That poor boy.”
Sephiroth used his grip on Genesis’ arm to throw him into the alter. The small wooden table collapsed under the weight and crumpled to the ground. The ornate cross, offerings, and candle holders scattered. Luckily, the flames from the candles were extinguished in the spilled wax. Genesis lay were he had been thrown and gasped for breath. He hands clenched and unclench a few times before he pushed himself up enough to lift his head.
“The Goddess will punish us,” he hissed. “She will punish us, and we will rot in hell. Maybe if we repent now-”
A laugh full of evil and hatred made Genesis cower in the wreckage of the broken wood. Sephiroth knelt down and grabbed the other Cardinal by the hair to yank his head up in what was surely a painful angle.
“What is Heaven or Hell, to one with no soul?” Sephiroth questioned, smiling a little. “Or, better yet, what is Hell to He who rules it?”
Genesis’ eyes widened in uncontrolled fear. His breath came faster, heavier, and he prayed. “Our Mother, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name-”
The delicate, swan-like neck would snap easily under Sephiroth’s strength. The silver haired man wrapped his hands around Genesis’ neck, and the redhead panicked. He thrashed in the tight hold, still gasping words of prayer between desperate breaths.
“Sephiroth.” The quiet word made him drop Genesis and turn toward the door. The redhead gasped for air and quietly backed away. He tried to make himself as small as possible against the wall.
“Cloud?” Sephiroth questioned. “What are doing here, boy?”
“You have been causing trouble.” Cloud looked at Sephiroth expectantly, a strange, eerily glowing presence to his eyes.
Sephiroth regarded the boy thoughtfully for a moment, then started laughing in surprise. “Gabriel. It’s good to see you again.”
Cloud crossed his arms over his chest. “You should leave.”
“You haven’t hidden from me so well before, Gabriel. Did you enjoy it when I fucked you? You always have. Isn’t that why she sends you? She knows you’ll not only stop me, but enjoy it?”
“Leave.”
Sephiroth raised his hands in acquiescence, but his smile spoke of mischief. “As you wish. Until we meet again…Cloud.”
Huge, black wings unfolded from Sephiroth’s back. He seemed to glow with darkness an instant before the wings wrapped around him in a sweep of wind and feathers. He dissolved before their eyes into a breath of air and a few scattered plumes.
Cloud shook his head solemnly and uncrossed his arms. He looked up at the mortal cowering against the wall.
“De-demon of the darkness. I let him lead me into sin,” Genesis cringed. His wide, horrified eyes gazed up at Cloud. “Have you come to punish me?”
The blond came forward. He knelt by Genesis and smoothed his hand over the delicate, bruised face and neck. “No. The Goddess knows those who have repented.” His face softened. “Will you be willing lead into evil again?”
“Never.” Genesis was insistent. He took Cloud’s hand and placed his forehead against the back. “Blessed one lead me into the light.”
Cloud used his other hand to cradle the delicate skull of the other man. His hand seemed small where it grasped Genesis’ skull, but the otherworldly power given to him by the Goddess could have crushed those fragile bones like parchment.
He tilted Genesis’ head back gently. Those beautiful, blue eyes were wide with too many emotions to decipher while tears traced down his pale cheeks. Cloud leaned forward to brush his lips against the soft, red lips before him. He pulled back to look attentively at the mortal.
“Welcome home, prodigal son.”
