Chapter 4
"How is it going?" Selie asked. The brunette tilted her head as she looked across the table at her friend. Zell didn't seem to be in too bad of a mood, so she was hoping that things were going well. At least as well as they could go when your partner was none other then Seifer.
Zell didn't answer at first. He was deep in thought about his new roommate. In the last couple of days, he had learned a lot about Seifer. There were still times of course when they clashed, though Zell could tell that Seifer was really trying to bite his tongue. When Seifer wasn't running his tongue and acting like a normal human being, it was very easy for Zell to see him in ways he had never imagined looking at him before.
The one thing that Zell hated about himself was that he easily fell for his friends. He had had a crush on his best friend Squall for as long as he could remember, though it faded just as quickly as it came about. Then he got a crush on Irvine, though after getting to know him better, Zell's crush on him too faded. He still found both men very attractive, but nothing deeper remained.
<1>Now Seifer.... Zell thought, still ignoring Selphie. The girl was getting an annoyed look on her face. Of course he's hot and all, but why in Gaia do I have to get a crush on him? If I blush around him one more time, I am sure he will figure it out. Though....
“ZELL!” Selphie yelled. “Gaia to Zell. Hey, answer my question.”
"What question?" Zell asked, looking completely clueless. He blinked a few times, before grinning when he saw Seifer walk into the room. When he realized he was smiling, the blond started to cover it up by having a fake coughing fit. He started to drink down his water and in record speed, he drank it all. Before Selphie could ask him if he was okay, he shoved a hot dog down his throat.
"Are you going insane?" Selphie asked, sounding completely serious. The girl shoved over her glass of water, letting her blond friend have it, as now he really was having a coughing fit. "I asked you how the project is going with you and Seifer and... where's your child?"
It just so happened that right when she said that, Seifer had came up behind her. He was looking amused and confused as he watched Zell act foolish, having no idea why he would be shoving hot dog after hot dog into his mouth, not to mention he was coughing as if he was going to hack up a lung. He heard what Selphie had asked and remained quiet, curious what Zell would say knowing he was listening.
Zell had just been so flustered when he felt himself instantly react so happy when he saw his roommate. He and Seifer had only been on “normal” talking terms for a couple of days, but Zell was really enjoying it. He wanted it to last, but he wasn't sure if Seifer would only let it last for as long as the project went on.
Pausing his eating, Zell tried to gain his composure back. "I was really hungry," He said lamely when he saw the look Selphie was giving him. He was still avoiding her question, though he soon sighed, knowing that if he didn't say something, the girl would probably never let it go.
"It's going really good," Zell mumbled. He felt really silly, knowing that Seifer was staring at him. He glanced behind Selphie at Seifer and blinked a few times, before glancing at the empty seat next to him. "He's got our child," He went on, knowing he had better call it that, or else Selphie would yell at him for not taking the project seriously enough. Since the project started, Seifer was taking the doll when the two weren't together. He was going to do that for the first half of the month and then Zell was going to do it for the last half of the month. When together, they both took care of it.
Getting the hint from Zell, Seifer walked around the table and set down next to him. Selphie's eyes seemed to bug out as she looked at the older blond. Seifer never, ever set with them. He always set with people from the discipline comity.
“Uh...” Selphie surprisingly seemed to forget how to talk. Zell couldn't help but chuckle. Seifer just shrugged, gently placing the doll on the table.
“You didn't get any food,” Zell pointed out.
Selphie's chin was about to hit the floor; the girl was in shock that the blonds were able to work together so well. Any other time, Seifer would be teasing Zell and Zell would be yelling back at him.
With a smirk, Seifer pointed to Zell's plate. “You got the last of the hot dogs”
“You like hot dogs?” Zell asked. Now he knew Seifer was really an okay guy. Anyone who liked hot dogs was great in Zell's book. The younger blond pushed his tray over to Seifer. “You can have the rest of mine. I got too many.”
“Excuse me,” Selphie said, before calmly getting up from the table. She grabbed her doll Gigi and her tray and left the two blonds alone. The girl dumped her tray, making some cadets give her an odd look. They was Selphie was grinning was almost scary.
Neither boy noticed that Selphie had left as they continued quietly talking. Both seemed to greatly enjoy the new bond of friendship they had started to grow between each other. Zell would have agreed to it a lot sooner if he had thought Seifer would consider it. He wished that the war had never happened; that he and Seifer could have been friends since childhood. Most of his memories from his childhood was cloudy from using GFs for too long, though slowly things were coming back to everyone. Bits and pieces of their past that they had forgotten.
---
"Lets be best friends forever, okay?" The little blond haired boy said to the slightly older blond boy.
The bigger blond smirked, giving a small nod. "Of course, we will be."
Seifer Almasy set up in his four poster bed, sweat dripping down his forehead. It was that same dream again. He had it almost every night since he and Zell had started to get along. It was just a small dream; two little boys playing outside, a little promise passing through their lips.
Seifer glanced to his side, making sure that his roommate was still asleep. Seeing that he was, he slowly got out of the bed and made his way to the bathroom, not before checking on the doll. He was still so very sleepy that he hadn't even realized he was acting as if it was a real breathing child.
He wasn't stupid; he knew that the ones in the dream were himself and Zell as children. But why he was having a dream like this was the question? He and Zell had never been childhood friends, had they? He always picked on Zell as far as he could remember.
Ifrit snorted.
"What?" Seifer grumbled, not bothering to speak only in his head. He was alone; he knew he wasn't the only one who spoke to their GFs.
The fire GF stayed quiet; that caused Seifer to frown, thinking as hard as he could about the dream. Could it be a memory?
~A lot of your memories are packed tightly away,~ The fire demon said. ~That is the price you have always paid us for our services.~ Seifer shuddered at the idea. They paid the GFs by letting them eat their memories.
"How come I am getting fleeting memories back?" Seifer asked. "We still keep you equipped just as much, don't we?"
~It is true that you do, but think about it, there has not been a mission where we were needed to be summoned ever since the final battle.~
Seifer frowned at Ifrit's words. He did not like being reminded of when he had been possessed. He had killed so many innocent people. Girls, guys, old and young, even babies. He wished the GF would eat those memories, though Seifer felt he deserved to always remember them.
"So the longer we don't summon you, the more we will get memories back... and others won't be taken away?" Seifer asked, not exactly sure how it really worked.
~Yes... see if you summon us, it puts a lock on the memories we have consumed for energy. Like wise if you don't summon us, those locks start to break and the memories slowly spill out.~
Seifer nodded. That was true. Irvine had stopped using his GFs for a long amount of time, remembering their whole past together at the orphanage. He told them of it and shared many of his memories of them together. It was hard to take in, but in time they too began to get memories back from their childhood. Now it was stressed that one wasn't supposed to summon their GF unless it was absolutely needed. Memories were far too important to lose.
