He pretended not to notice the furtive glances in his direction when Cid was sure nobody else was looking. He kept next on the other side of Nanaki when they traveled on foot, and went out of his way to avoid being alone in the same room as the pilot aboard the Highwind.

It wasn’t that Vincent was afraid.

Of course not, after all, what could a monster like him be afraid of? He was merely avoiding the inevitable loss of getting close to someone else again. If there was one thing he had learned from Lucrecia, it was that anything he pursued as a relationship was bound to fail. Even more so now that he was no longer human.

He knew that it was only a matter of time before Cid approached him about this. Vincent was sure if he pushed the other man away, the pilot could move on with his life. Settle down with a nice girl and start a family. One thing Vincent would never the pleasure of knowing. He had enough to atone for without forcing whatever potential darkness on a child.

Footsteps approached his brooding spot, a corner near the deck that was surprisingly dark. The sound broke Vincent from his thoughts and he looked up to see Cid, no surprise. The blonde man ran a hand through his hair as if trying to come up with the right words to say.

Vincent spoke first. “I know what you are going to say, and you’re only setting yourself up for disappointment. I have nothing to offer anyone else, especially in the way you-“

Cid cut him off, gripping the front of his cloak in both hands and shaking the ex-Turk slightly, his face having quickly gone from nervous to furious. “Don’t give me that bullshit!” he practically growled, his face inches from Vincent’s. The dark-haired man was surrounded by his smoky scent, tea-scented breath rolling over his face warmly.

“You want this as much as I do, damn you! It’s only some messed up form of self-hatred that’s stopping you, ain’t it, Vince? Or are you afraid?”

Something coiled inside Vincent snapped, and he slapped Cid’s hands away from his clothing and reached forward instead, surprising the other man, and dragged him in for a rough kiss. He didn’t ask, he took.

Teeth clacked together and someone’s lip bled, but none of that mattered with the array of sensations rolling between the two men. Cid groaned, reaching forward and wrapping a hand on the back of Vincent’s neck, as if to stop him from breaking the kiss.

The two pulled apart finally, and stared each other down. Finally Vincent smirked lightly, and Cid let out a light chuckle. It seemed that the two could make this work, and although Cid was going to have to put more effort into this than any of his past, admittedly few relationships, and Vincent was still emotionally retarded, they’d somehow make this work. Vincent was sure of it.
