Chapter 46
"Are you sure, Spike? I mean, we bin' searchin' this area for three days now and ain't come up with a damn thing!"
A frown crossed the blond swordsman's face, "I know Cid but he's here, he has to be. I can feel it like always." Cloud furrowed his brows in confusion and concentration, "It's strange though, today his presence has been unstable, flaring and then weakening to the point I almost can't feel him."
"Hey! Maybe that means Vampy beat down the damn psycho," Barret offered hopefully.
Cloud shook his head, fingers tracing the faint scar still left on his arm, "You guys didn't see the...creature in control of Vincent. There's no way that he could harm Sephiroth with that thing in him. I don't know what's going on but we need to find them fast."
Nanaki sighed, "But with the recent snowfall, it will be difficult to find any traces or trail that they may have left behind."
"I know Nanaki, but we can't give up. Vincent would never give up on any of us." Determined blue eyes swept the gathered group, "We'll split up. Nanaki and I will take the southern pass, Barrett and Tifa check out the western range. Cid and Yuffie, head back to the ship and see if you can find anything on the radar. If anyone finds anything, signal the others ok?"
As Yuffie started to whine about being stuck with the old man, Cid grumbled, "Right, right. We got ya Spike, jus' be careful alright? We all know the General's got a soft spot for makin' yer life hell."
Cloud nodded once before turning south, Nanaki at his side. They searched for several hours before the fire wolf froze, his head turning in different directions as he took deep breaths through his nose. The swordsman watched in silence until the golden eye turned to him, "Did you find something?"
"It's faint but definitely Sin's scent."
Cloud contacted Cid as they followed the faded scent, "Nanaki's caught a trail. We need you guys to get here."
"Alright." There was several moments of silence as the blond checked the radar to find their location, "Damn Spike. They picked one of the hardest places ta reach by ship. The closest I can git will still be a couple hours away. You guys gonna be alright 'till we get there?"
"Yeah, we'll just check out the situation and then we'll wait for you guys." Cloud hung up, his eyes bright with worry. 'Hang in there Vincent. We'll be there soon.'
Nanaki's pace slowed as they came to a snow-blown cliff wall. He stopped in front of a large pile of stones, passing the space several times before nodding, "The scent stops here, but the area's been disturbed recently. I think there must be some sort of cave behind these stones."
Blue eyes studied the hidden entrance for several moments before sighing, "Well then I guess we'll have to wait here before we go in. I don't want to draw too much attention before we're ready."
They settled against one of the cliff walls facing the collapsed stones, occasionally checking the skies for any signs of their companions. About an hour had passed when a low noise caught Nanaki's attention and he nudged Cloud's leg, motioning toward the covered entrance. The blond nodded, pulling First Tsurugi from his back as they both moved to crouch behind one of the larger boulders. A deafening blast sent chunks of stone and dirt flying in all directions before the area fell silent once more, much to the confusion of the tense pair.
Nanaki's ears turned in several directions as he smelled the air. Turning to Cloud, he spoke softly, "There is no one leaving the cave but oddly the scent is Chaos' alone."
They slowly stood, eying the wide cavern mouth for any sign of traps. Cloud moved forward first, blue eyes piercing the shadowed entrance as he held First Tsurugi in front of him.
"If I wanted the two of you dead, you would be already." The blond and fire wolf spun at the low voice coming from behind them, immediately ready to defend themselves. Chaos gave a smile at their obvious wariness but his golden eyes held no mirth, "The abomination is of no concern to you or anyone else anymore. Your assistance will not be necessary for his end."
Glowing blue eyes narrowed with suspicion and confusion, "What do you mean Chaos?"
A chilling fanged grin crossed the dark silver face, "I mean that his quality of life all depends on my mood which, I might add, is rather sadistic at the moment."
Cloud studied the demon for a moment, his eyes going wide when he noticed the absence of the silver collar at the creature's neck. He began to speak but a scream from the cavern cut him off, Chaos clutching a metal-encased hand to his head and the other to his chest, swaying as though in pain. When he suddenly leapt toward a nearby boulder, both Nanaki and Cloud watched in amazement as the demon seemed to melt into the shadows cast by the late afternoon sun. They glanced at each other and nodded in silent agreement before running into the dark cave.
More than once, Cloud found himself grateful that the fire wolf was at his side. If it weren't for Nanaki's sense of smell, the blond would have easily become lost in the maze of tunnels and twisting dead-ends. After many tense moments, their footing became easier as a disturbingly familiar green glow began to light the passageway and both slowed their approach to what they hoped wasn't a trap. Nanaki's smooth voice easily caught the swordsman's ear, "I smell blood, a lot of blood. There is too many different sources to say who's exactly."
The spiky-haired blond nodded once, his face grim as he held himself against the stone wall, leaning slowly to look into the Mako-lit cavern. Blue eyes swept over the gray stone, easily finding many dark patches on the floors and wall. The sheer amount here was more than he had seen on some of the battlefields three years ago. He leaned forward a little more and his eyes widened when a golden glow came into view.
In the middle of the floor lay the second eldest Remnant, chest rising and falling with slow, shallow breaths. There was a forming pool of blood from under the boy, and from what blue eyes could see, blood also dripped from what he guessed was the entry to the wound from his back. Cloud stepped forward with caution, scanning the otherwise empty room with First Tsurugi gripped tightly in his hand. There was an eerie silence surrounding the room as he walked towards the unconscious Remnant, only the sound of breathing and footsteps being heard.
Nanaki sniffed the air again, frowning when his nose only caught scent of Yazoo’s blood, and faintly Vincent’s but anything else was masked by the sharp, bitter scent Mako, ”I am still not picking up much, Cloud. All I am getting is the smell of Yazoo and Vincent. Yet…all this blood can’t be just theirs…can it?”
It was Cloud’s turn to frown. Kneeling down next to the glowing man, the blond eyed Yazoo’s back, studying the wound, “It could be, but we can’t know for sure…” He paused, free hand reaching up to rub his right shoulder, “But this was caused by Masamune… I’d recognized this anywhere.”
There was a whimper from the silver haired man, drawing Cloud’s attention to Yazoo’s face. Skin was pale beneath the golden glow, slim brows where drawn together. Reaching down, the blond went to place his hand on the Remnant’s shoulder.
Suddenly, a clawed hand wrapped around his wrist, wrenching the ex-SOLDIER away from the boy and onto his ass a few feet away. Cloud winced at the vice-like grip, feeling his bones grinding painfully from the force, ”What the hell?!”
Chaos growled, lips parting to show off deadly fangs, “You will not touch him!”
Cloud quickly nodded, the memory of fangs ripping through his arm was all-too clear in that moment. As the clawed hand release him, he moved back another few feet for comfort. Chaos made no move to follow, instead his gaze shifting from Yazoo to them with a strange concern. It was obvious the demon was very protective of the slender Remnant but neither the blond nor the fire wolf knew how to broach the subject in the tense atmosphere.
As it turned out, Chaos was the first to speak, his tone hesitant and bitter, "The host places a great deal of...trust in you. So perhaps I can as well. I...am unable to heal the Shinga-Chi."
Both blue and golden eyes blinked. Chaos was...asking them for help? Nanaki was the first to find his voice, "Am I correct in assuming Shinga-Chi is your name for Yazoo?"
"Its not just a name, it is his title and any that try to harm him will deal with my wrath." As though to verify this, a muffled but angry cry echoed from another tunnel across the cavern. The concern in the demonic golden eyes vanished, leaving a deadly chill that sent a shudder through the other two conscious men. They both stiffened when that gaze turned from the tunnel to them, a sadistic smirk on his face, "Do not touch him, I will only be gone a moment. It seems the half-breed is ready for another lesson."
As Chaos stood, he grabbed Death Penalty from it's holster. Nanaki and Cloud watched the winged back long after the dark tunnel had rendered him invisible. The scream that soon filled the cavern made both question their own safety and they took another nervous step away from the unconscious Remnant.

I was beginning to think, that the end was rather... uneventfull and quick. that was until I came to the end. Guess Sephy isn´t someone to leave the stage without a proper encore. update soon please?
Frizz: Really, did you honestly think I would make it that easy? Hell no! LOL And Sephy hasn't quite left the stage yet as you can tell.
