Breakthrough

Chapter 5
Breakthrough

Squall had remained silent on the way back to the Palace and ignored her every time she attempted to start a conversation. By the time they had made it back there, Quistis had practically screamed in frustration.

"Squall, talk to me you stubborn ass!"

"I don't have anything to say. I just want to get to my room and away from your nagging."

"Nagging?! I'm only trying to get you to say something!"

"Exactly." he said calmly, then refused to speak again as they made their way up to the 10th floor. She had attempted to block him from entering his room and with a short scream of surprise from her, he had slung her over his shoulder, placing her by her own door. "Get some rest," was all he said before slamming his door closed behind him. She had reluctantly went inside, feeling defeated yet again.

Several days had passed since she had been injured. Fortunately, it wasn't serious and she was completely healed. Unfortunately, Squall had been trying his hardest to avoid her. He hardly ever left his room now and when he did it was in search of a fight. He absolutely refused to let her accompany him again, telling her not too kindly, that he didn't want to have to protect her.

Several times she attempted to get him to open his door to talk, but he refused her, or simply ignored her persistent knocks. She actually tried staying outside his door, hoping she could catch him coming out, but that hadn't worked either. He merely slammed the door in her face, yelling for her to go away. It was this that made her go to Laguna as a final resort.

Squall paced back and forth, trying to clear his mind. He was stuck in this room, all because Quistis wouldn't back off. He needed a fight to let his frustration out, but he couldn't do that, in a worry she would follow him. He didn't want to admit how scared he'd been when she was hurt.

The last several nights had been practically sleepless. He kept having nightmares about Quistis falling, except in his dreams she died painfully and he could do nothing to stop it. 'Why did she have to come here? I'm better off alone.' So deep in thought, he didn't hear the click of the lock and the door opening. When he looked up and saw her, he stopped pacing. She waved the key card she had in her hand as she shut the door behind her.

"Laguna had a spare. You shouldn't have been so damn stubborn."

"Just go."

"I can't do that. You need to open up, Squall. Quit hiding inside that damn ice cocoon!"

"Whatever!" He headed quickly toward the bedroom to escape her, but she followed close behind, refusing to be ignored any longer.

"Will you stop saying that!"

"What do you want me to say?!" He spun to face her, trying to keep his emotions in check.

"Admit the pain you're feeling! Admit you're being an ass toward your friends and family! Stop hiding!" He turned his back to her, trying to block her out, but she was having none of it. "Have you even cried since her death?!" she asked, circling him as he stood in place. He avoided her eyes, not liking the judgment he saw in them.

"Stop!"

"No! Answer me."

"I'm warning you, Quistis......., don't do this." She could see him trembling and he gave her a piercing glare. She kept up her verbal assault, not afraid of his anger.

"Well, have you?"

"No," he said through gritted teeth.

"Squall, did you even love her?!" His eyes widened in shock. 'How can she think I didn't?'

"I loved her with everything I had. How dare you think otherwise." He hadn't shouted, but his voice had a deadly tone.

"Then prove it, Squall. Mourn her," she said softly.

"Why are you doing this?" He sat on the bed, hanging his head in defeat.

"Squall....."

"It's my fault!" he shouted suddenly, making her gasp. "I should have been more alert. I could have swerved out of the way, but I was too slow! It's my fault she's dead!" His voice cracked on the last word and his face crumbled as the tears he denied for so long finally flowed. She watched him lay back on the bed and curl up in a ball, letting out a loud sob. She went to him, not wanting him to have to do this alone.

"Sweetie, it wasn't your fault. Don't think that, ever." She lay down, wrapping her arm around his body, pulling him close. She thought he would pull away, but instead he rolled toward her, clutching her like a life preserver.

"I miss her so much. Why did she have to go?" he sobbed against her shoulder.

"I don't know," she said, crying with him, wishing she could give him an answer that made sense. She held him, running her hand through his hair. Neither of them spoke another word, only clinging to each other for support. After a time, she noticed that his sobs slowed to a stop and his breath had deepened. He'd fallen asleep in total exhaustion from the emotional release.

His face looked at peace, something she hadn't seen in far too long. She gently tried to move his arm to get up, but he clutched at her in his sleep and she stayed for him. Before long, her own exhaustion took over and she slept with him in her arms.

Authors Note: I thought it was finally time for Squall to break down. I didn't want to drag out his resistance any longer. I hope no one thought that was too abrupt.
