Duo grunted as he flexed his back again. The doctor continued to poke and prod his back while hemming and hawing at him,” Ah, well, you see here, yes this is VERY fascinating.” He pulled away and Duo snatched up the black cloak he’d taken to wearing to avoid the looks he might get with the lumps on his back; two of them, evenly spaced and painfully itchy.

He’d been losing sleep so had finally gone to see the only Mako doctor they had; because he sure as hell was staying away from Hojo, the whiny little bastard kept bugging him about his abilities.

He turned to face the Doc,” So?” The doctor fidgeted with a vial,” They appear to have something hidden below the surface of your back. I can’t tell what caused it first the Mako or…” Here he held up the vial full of thick fluid; a mixture of his blood, the mako green, and some black liquid. Duo took it and eyed it curiously,” What is it?”

The doctor sighed,” I have reason to believe it comes from the J Experiment.” Duo stared,” Experiment?” The doctor nodded,” I worked for a time under Gast while Hojo was still slightly below him, they had an argument once. Hojo had vial of this and was arguing of the ‘miracle’ results it could bring if mixed with Mako and given to humans. Gast argued that too few were compatible, they’d kill to many subjects before finding enough to take it and be successful and make it worth while. Since Gast was the head scientist at the time Gast got the final say. Before Hojo fired me after becoming head of Research I snagged this vial to experiment with; it…was not pretty. You’re lucky you’re still alive. The only other known survivor of it is…” He opened the flap and nodded his head in the direction of the ‘park’ across from his home.

Sephiroth had been captured by some children to show materia tricks to. He carefully pulled fire and ice into dancing spirals; ending it but using the fire to melt the ice into snowflakes that floated about the giggling tykes.


Duo watched for a moment longer as they tackled him to the ground in happiness and the dumbfounded general was surrounded by kids all wanting to hug him. He twitched the entrance closed and turned to Tamar,” You realize no one is to know? Right?”

Tamar gave him a critical look,” Isn’t a lie by omission against your no lying code?” Duo chuckled darkly,” It’s not a lie by omission if no one knows about the condition in the first place.” The look in his glowing violet eyes told of evil things awaiting him if he did not follow along with Duo’s plan; with a slightly frightened nod he agreed,” Of course, patient confidentiality and all that.”

Duo flashed his eyeteeth at the doctor, the pointed teeth appearing more menacing than they normally did,” I’m glad we were able to reach an accord Dr. Tamar.” He swirled his great cloak back on and bowed before taking his leave.

The doctor crossed himself and whispered,” And I Pray that I never have to make an accord with such a devil again.” He started when he realized Duo had taken the only blood sample he had from Duo with him. Cursing his bad luck he headed to the back in hopes of scrounging up a slide he might have prepared with his blood.

It might be necessary to start trying to create an antibody to negate some of the Jenova effects…

“Get off me!” he heard Zack laugh at him from his position by the fence. He growled at him,” I swear to GAIA Zack that if you don’t help me I will never save you from Scarlet’s advances again if you don’t help me!”

The hazel eyed man blanched and immediately jumped in,” Hey kids, you thought those tricks were cool watch this!” He pulled a lightening and gravity and began to do more materia tricks for the children who abandoned their live plushy general to watch Zack.

Seph made good his escape; the last thing he heard was Zack going,” For my next trick…” He snorted as he hid behind a column and leaned back. He was pulled form his short lived revere by a rustle of cloth; opening his eyes he spotted a cloaked Duo heading off across from him. Frowning he straightened and made to follow; after all Duo still didn’t have the level of combat experience he did so he should be good.

He followed him along the maze of pipes into the darker areas where no one yet lived until they reached a grand looking door of black metal set into the wall of a dead end. Duo pushed it open and slipped in, Sephiroth managed to slip I before the door shut; finding himself in a black draped room.

But no Duo…

“Ya know it’s rude to come in to a person room without knocking or permission.” He whirled slicing out with Masumune unconsciously only to hear the ring of metal on metal as the blade was met with the metal staff of a scythe.

Duo pushed him back, whipping out with his own weapon that Seph was forced to parry and counter. It soon turned into a work out, dancing back and forth; silver flashes and glowing gems locked together time and time again.

Finally Duo dropped his blade to touch the floor, panting lightly from the exertion,” I'll be damned; that was fun!” He swung it up to rest on his shoulder,” We’ll have to do this again some time; as for now, Tah.” He tossed a materia at him that Seph instinctively caught; only to be transported away to him room. The last thing he saw was the wide, maniacal grin.

A closer examination of the orb made him chuckle. It was a warp Materia commonly found in the wilds and good for one one-way-trip only; clever.
