Chapter 5
(( writer's note: forgive the shortness compared to past chapters. This is just for vincent ))
Chapter 5
Back on the hillside, not far from a old mansion. Vincent sometimes comes here when he dreams. Normally, Lucrecia is in these dreams. Sits on the hillside, the trees at the top casting their shadows down. The dream day always more perfect then even his memory of it. There is someone he wishes he could bring here. Not that he would come.... perhaps he could appreciate this beauty. The clean air and peaceful scenery.
Hojo’s voice, “ Still chasing married people, Turk? Tsk... One might think you would have learned the first time. Being a Turk, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. “
Vincent glares at Hojo, having the nerve to be here of all places, “ You have no place here. Begone! “
Hojo leans against the same tree Lucrecia once touched, “ Hopeless romantic. Quite unbecoming of you, Valentine. “ Plucks a leaf that seems to immediately wither, “ Like my experiments? Two of them were inspired by our work on you. You should feel honored. “
Vincent gives a low growls, “ What did you do now? “
Hojo just seems to smirk, “ Nothing you could comprehend! “ Pauses to watch the dead, black leaf fall from his hand, “ Despite your troublesome meddling, I decided to let bygones be bygones... water under the bridge. After all, such petty notions of revenge have no room in the grand scheme of Science! Want to help? It’ll be fun!” Seems a little excited or as excited as Hojo is capable of getting.
Vincent pulls a gun aimed for Hojo’s head even if this is only a dream, “ When will it even be enough for you? How many lives must you destroy?“
Hojo just shakes his head, “ Its too late to say no, now. Even as we speak, my experiment is in motion. I think your friends will be better use to me. Even that pilot.... what's his name? Oh yes, Highwind. Play along and I might let him live. “
Vincent pauses before cocking back the hammer of his gun, “ What are you talking about? No more riddles. “
Hojo,” Only undoing a great injustice made in this world. “
Before Vincent can ask anything or even fire his gun, he finds himself waking up. Back in the sleeping chambers of the airship. How did he get here? It takes a few moments to recall that he had some drinks with Cid. They went to a bar in order to talk about Zack and Fianna. Though neither had much to really say, aside speculate if Zack was real or some Jenova creation. Things get hazy after that.
With one snort next to him, Vincent realizes that Cid is sleeping next to him. The pilot also still wearing enough clothes to suggest nothing happened; his pants; a sweat shirt, and socks. Boots are across the chamber in a heap with jacket and shirt. Vincent knows he slept in almost everything but his cloak and boots. They must have stumbled here, this being the one place Cid feels safest. Can’t help but smile at the sleeping man, now on his stomach with arm dangling over side. Relief that he didn't do anything regretful, yet still a twinge of disappointment he didn’t get to do anything to regret.
How the Pilot fascinated him. Perhaps the first impression was not great. Hearing Cid treat Shera with such appalling manners. The man’s not renown for how he handles women. Admittedly, he really didn’t start off liking Cid at all. Back then, Cid drank alot. That morning, he was still suffering from a hangover when they arrived, so the tea was Shera’s way of helping him recover. His growing temper of having to wait didn’t help. Having to travel left the pilot with fewer chances to drink. Away from his home, Cid became more friendly to an extent. Vincent realized that Cid was like himself, more on the fringe of the team and happier left be. More often Cid and Vincent were teamed up, and sometimes Yuffie would be with them. Mostly, Vincent was amazed at how optimistic Cid really was.
The first time they went out to have fun was at the Golden Saucer. Cid’s idea of fun was racing and drinking. After a while, and a few wins, they checked out the arcade, more for curiosity’s sake. Vincent being dragged along here at first, till he saw a shooting game. Cid fell in love with wrestling game or that was Vincent’s guess.
The shock of Cait Sith being a spy seemed hardly anything next to Aeirth’s death. It was not just that she died but how she left them so suddenly. Did she know she was going to die? Vincent doubts it. She loved life to the fullest. Her death affected them all, Cloud the hardest. Vincent used to wonder if he could have stopped her. Been with her to shield her from that fatal strike. Or did the planet need her to die? Despite the pain, they all became a strong group and closer friends.
They trekked through the north forced them to camp in the wild. The small tents didn’t provide enough room for more then two adults. Vincent had to share his with Cid. At first, he wanted nothing to do with this idea. Be easier to just sit outside. Cid insisted they had to share body heat. For the first time, Vincent had to be physically close to someone else. The pilot lay there, not caring that he was sharing a tent with a monster. The longer he laid next to the blond, the more he found he liked being with someone. For the first time in years he began to feel love. No, he knew he doesn’t deserve to feel this way. Was it really love at all?
That is why Vincent now gets out of bed and cleans up in the bathroom. Perhaps, that vile bastard might have a point. Lucrecia was married to Hojo. Cid is married to Shera and his aircraft. To be connected to him is a curse. For people like himself, perhaps happiness is just not ever meant to be. Yet, is it a sin to want it?
