Chapter 55
Vincent barely caught himself as his body threatened to collapse onto the stone floor. Shaking his head to clear it, he quickly looked up to find his friends. Cloud and Nanaki still fought the dark remains of Jenova and he gave a sigh of relief to find that the two were relatively unharmed. ‘How long was I out?’ There was no response. ‘Chaos?’
He could feel the demon shifting inside his head so he knew Chaos was still awake but he seemed to be ignoring him for some reason. Vincent attempted to regain his feet, frowning as a sharp pain broke through his right arm. Glancing down, dark brows rose as he found that the nearly healed burns on his arms had reopened, blood slowly dripping down to his fingers and the ground. ‘They should be healed enough now not to bleed.’
Scarlet eyes looked at Yazoo, surprised to find the younger man was still unconscious. ‘The glow is gone but why isn’t he awake yet?’
A foreboding sensation of wariness swept through him as all the demons within him suddenly fell silent. ‘Chaos? What-’ His thoughts were cut off as Yazoo’s eyes snapped open, the normal blue-green nearly overwhelmed by a brilliant golden light. Breath hissed out through clenched teeth as the brightly glowing eyes swept the cavern, narrowing when they landing on the multitude of dark alien masses lashing out at Cloud and Nanaki only a few feet away.
One of the pieces of blackened flesh broke through, flying straight for the silver-haired man. Vincent moved to intercept the needle-like appendage but his body faltered, his knees still too weakened to hold his weight. He could only watch as the deadly cells attacked the Remnant. His horror quickly turned to amazement however as a pale hand reached up and snatched the Jenova tentacle from mid-air, claw-like nails digging into the dark flesh. Suddenly that golden glow returned to the Remnant’s body and the writhing mass wilted, turning to dust. The golden aura disappeared as quickly as it has appeared and Yazoo rose, his eyes roaming over the rest of the alien pieces before pausing strangely at Cloud.
The gunman’s stomach twisted as Chaos gave a whispered ‘Oh shit!’ Vincent felt the familiar pressure building in his chest as the winged demon attempted to take control. ‘DO NOT FIGHT ME IF YOU WISH YOUR COMPANIONS TO LIVE, HOST!’
The gunner hesitated for a moment but soon relaxed, allowing the demon to take over. Chaos moved quickly, dashing between the swordsman and fire wolf to a nearby wall, “Both of you get over here NOW!”
Nanaki started at the loud command and glanced back, his single eye widening as he found Yazoo moving with a deadly grace towards Cloud, “He’s right, move it!”
The swordsman hesitated and followed the wolf’s gaze, “What the- Holy shit!” He quickly raised one of his blades to block the clawed hand aiming for his neck, using the other to continue deflecting Jenova’s remains, “The hell are you doing?! We’re not your enemies!”
No response came and Cloud suddenly felt himself yanked back by his collar, sharp nails barely missing his face. Chaos harshly pulled the blond alongside him and grabbed the wolf by his mane as he opened a gate into the shadows. As soon as they were through, he closed the opening behind him, breathing a sigh of relief, as the silver-haired man did not follow, “Count yourselves lucky that he does not know how to open the doorways yet.”
The swordsman struggled to break free, “Anyone care to tell me what the hell just happened?”
Chaos gave a growl, “Cease your movements, moron, or I might lose my hold of you. If you are outside my grasp, you will call the attention of the creatures that dwell here and your pitiful blades will do you no good against them.”
Nanaki looked around warily, his fiery tail twitching, “What sort of creatures?”
The demon gave a chilling smirk, unseen in the darkness but heard in his voice, “They are the things nightmares are made of and they are immortal. You will be safe as long as you remain with me, my name still resides in their memories and the ones that could have turned them against us still remain dormant in the Lifestream. As long as they remain unaware of my depleted energies, we will have no reason to worry.”
Vincent’s voice drifted through the demon’s thoughts. ‘Then do not do anything foolish to call their attention and cause my friends harm.’
Chaos gave a snort. ‘And just what would you do host?’ He could feel the gunman bristle and mentally shook his head. ‘Do not worry; your companions will survive this trip no matter what. They will perhaps be a little more wary of the shadows but they will be otherwise unharmed. You have my word.’
Cloud had stilled but his expression was still one of anger, “Why did Yazoo attack me?”
Chaos shook his head as he started walking, guiding the other two along a path only he could see, “It was not you he was attacking, manling.”
The blond gave a snort of disbelief, “Ok, then what do you call the claws coming at my head?”
“He could not see you, moron, only the energies that flow inside you. That glow he has in his eyes means that his abilities as a Shinga-chi are activated. He does not see the physical realm then. This trait makes Shinga-chi the ultimate trackers because once they know your energy, they can find you anywhere, no matter how you try to hide.”
Nanaki turned a golden eye to the demon, “That still doesn’t explain why he was going after Cloud.”
“Right now, the Shinga-chi is probably very pissed and is in a great deal of pain because of the bitch’s cells still inside him. His body will destroy those eventually but it takes more time to drain something inside him. Since he does not know how to control his abilities yet, he is running on pure instinct and that is telling him to kill the danger. That is the alien bitch at the moment and just what do you have flowing inside your veins, moron?”
Cloud‘s eyes widened with understanding, “You mean he can actually see Jenova inside me?”
The demon rolled his eyes, “Isn’t that what I just said? The only problem is that she is probably so far in your system that he would have killed you trying to drain her. I would rather not spend the next millennium listening to the host bitch and moan about your deaths as well as his first mate’s.”
Nanaki glanced back as they continued to walk, “Will Yazoo be alright by himself?”
Chaos huffed, “Yes. With how angry he is, I’d almost feel sorry for the parasite. Come on, the sooner I get the two of you out of here, the sooner I can go back and join the fun.”
Cloud jumped as something even colder than the void around them brushed against his arm, “The hell was that?!”
A strange noise left Chaos, something akin to the sound of windblown paper. Answering rustles came from several points around, above, and even below them. The human and wolf felt a trace amount of dread as their demonic companion swore under his breath. Nanaki fought to keep from showing his nervousness as he spoke, “I assume they are speaking. What is going on Chaos?”
“Apparently some of the newer generations do not recognize the importance of my name and challenge my right to bring the two of you here.” He gave a fanged grin and a short laugh, “It doesn’t help, I suppose, that I just told them to fuck off or die. Grab a hold of my wings, it seems I need to teach these punks to listen to their parents.”
Though unable to see each other, Cloud and Nanaki cast matching worried expressions at each other before taking hold of the demon’s offered wings. The rustling noises seemed to get more excited with their movements but a loud roar silenced them. The fire wolf tried to find any distinction at all in the void, “Will you be able to convince them to leave without…”
Though the question drifted off, Chaos understood, “Do no worry about speaking, wolf. They do not understand mortal words. And yes, I have enough energy for this. If I take out one, the others will back away. I just need to find the pack leader.”
Though the creatures were hidden from mortal eyes, the glowing gold of the demon easily distinguished their constantly shifting forms. Shadow creatures held no real shape, instead stealing the identity of their victim’s nightmares to intensify their fear. Since he was currently shielding the human and wolf, the only mind they could reach was his and he was sure they weren’t that stupid.
::Come, you who claim the name of the Walker of Old. Prove yourself else we shall destroy you and your wards.::
Chaos gave a huff, his eyes locking on the one that had spoken, ::And how do you want me to “prove” myself, bottom feeder?:: Keeping his attention on the speaker, he clenched his ungloved hand, allowing his claws to draw blood. Blood magic drained more than the dark electricity but he needed this to be a short fight.
::Allow us unrestrained access to your mind.::
::You must really think I’m stupid. No.:: After all, he already had four too many in his head as it was.
The group shifted even closer to the trio. ::Then your lives are forfeit to us, false one.::
A dangerously feral grin spread over the silver-grey face, ::How’s this for proof? I’ll just kill you.::
Before the creature could respond, a net of red energy surrounded it. Mako blue and a single golden eye immediately locked on the sudden distinction within the darkness. Screeches of anger changed to pain as the net shrank, crushing the dark shadow trapped within. Chaos looked at the rest of the pack, ::Does anyone else wish to challenge my claim?::
None responded and he flared his energy dramatically, smirking as they fled, “Cowards.”
Nanaki did not look away from the still shrinking net, “I take it they have left?”
The demon huffed, “For now. Let’s go.”
Both Nanaki and Cloud were ready to leave the cold realm of the shadows and kept fast pace with the silver-skinned demon. The walk was silent until Chaos stopped, opening a doorway, “It seems your other companions await.”

“Come on!” Yuffie whined, “They’ve been in there forever! What if something happened?”
The rest of the group shifted uncomfortably, the question echoing one that had been playing in their own minds for the last hour. The young ninja stomped her foot before turning and practicing with her Conformer once more. Brown eyes went wide as Cloud and Nanaki seemed to walk out of the shadowed tree she was aiming for, “Look out!!!”
The human and fire wolf automatically dropped and a metallic grey hand reached out to catch the large weapon, throwing it to land at the surprised girl’s feet. Yuffie made no move to pick up the Conformer as she watched Chaos step from the shadows. The rest of AVALANCHE quickly found their feet and readied their weapons only to stop as Cloud and Nanaki stood between them and the demon. Finally Cid hollered, “Mind tellin’ us what the hell is goin’ on, oh fearless fuckin’ leader?”

A/N: Frizzy's BAACCKKKK! Had to send my computer to the factory cuz the motherboard fried and this was just a few days before I had to have surgery to have my tonsils and adenoids removed. So I have been stuck at home for about a week and a half with no comp and I dont have TV or anything. Luckily though, my muses took a liking to the break so I have this and Chapter 56 is about half done. Oh dear, Yazoo's not having much fun in any of your stories is he? Being cheated on by Reno in Electric Haven, dealing with a really really sad past in Tainted Love, and now being tortured by uber-harpy Jenova and her uber-whoopsie Sephiroth in this fic! If I was Jenova I'd have given up on Sephy after the FIRST failure...perhaps Hojo's attention has pickled our beloved calamity's brains somewhat.

I really enjoyed the part when Vincent is basically torturing himself to throw Sephiroth off. The imagery was very well written, and I liked the image I got from it in my head. A/N: Frizzy's BAACCKKKK! Had to send my computer to the factory cuz the motherboard fried and this was just a few days before I had to have surgery to have my tonsils and adenoids removed. So I have been stuck at home for about a week and a half with no comp and I dont have TV or anything. Luckily though, my muses took a liking to the break so I have this and Chapter 56 is about half done. All my other stories will have an update within the next day or two too so keep an eye open for them!

Oh dear, Yazoo's not having much fun in any of your stories is he? Being cheated on by Reno in Electric Haven, dealing with a really really sad past in Tainted Love, and now being tortured by uber-harpy Jenova and her uber-whoopsie Sephiroth in this fic! If I was Jenova I'd have given up on Sephy after the FIRST failure...perhaps Hojo's attention has pickled our beloved calamity's brains somewhat.

Well, you have taught me a few things of evil cliffies... my room mate's upset with me right now. lol, loved this chapter. I really enjoyed the part when Vincent is basically torturing himself to throw Sephiroth off. The imagery was very well written, and I liked the image I got from it in my head. Can't wait to see more! (as always)
Frizz: Why is your roommate upset with you? I am glad I wrote that scene well. It actually came from a dream I had and I was really hoping I would get it out right. It is a very powerful scene and very emotional if you take the time to really think about it.
