Lies
Seifer's chair squeaked at the hinges as he laid back in it at his office at SeeD headquarters, deep in thought about the mission bestowed upon him. He propped his feet up on the desk and crumpled some non-important documents with a sneer.
His mind was a tangle of questions referring to the nights when he'd had a chance to interrogate Zell. The blonde drugs dealer was good at not revealing too much at a time, that's why it was taking Seifer so long to get the information he needed.
Seifer knew he'd have to get even closer to Zell in order to get the answers he needed to put the dealer behind bars. Even if that meant destroying Zell and Squall's relationship or hurting a few people, Seifer was determined to get his answers any way he could; even if it meant having a sex involved fling with Zell.
The SeeD was prepared to take any risk or chance.
He pulled a cigarette carton from his trouser pocket and attempted to place one of it's contents in his mouth. Smoking was a habit that Seifer took up to often relieve him of stress or tension. He stopped himself from placing the white and brown stick in his mouth midway and instead snapped it in half. He screwed up the cigarette carton and threw it across the room into his waste paper basket, scoring a perfect goal.
"Now is a good time to stop...." He mumbled and rubbed the bridge of his nose.
Seifer sighed gently and closed his eyes, taking in what silence he could before it was all shattered by the familiar ring of his office phone.
Seifer reached forward, picked up the phone's receiver and pressed it against his cheek. "What?," Slight irritation lingered in his voice.
"Um, Sir?"
Seifer recognised the female voice on the end of the phone. "Fujin, baby, what's up?"
"Sir, I have some information on things goin' on at Zell's warehouse," Fujin stated.
The SeeD grinned. "Talk to me."
Fujin took a breath before answering. "Well, Zell hired a new staff member yesterday. Her name's Selphie Tilmett, she used to work for the Razors 'n some other gangs. Apparently she's very good at her job too."
"Hmm, could prove interesting," Seifer picked up a notepad and pen from his desk and noted down Selphie's name. He held the phone receiver between his shoulder and cheek to prevent it slipping.
"And Zell has products shipping out to Vice's lot on Friday too," Fujin added.
Seifer noted all the information down that Fujin came out with. Every word was a vital look out into what Zell was doing and how he was doing it, or whom he was doing it with. Any feed line he could get into Zell was good for disrupting. In fact, he already had plans to carry out on this new information.
"Thanks a lot, Fuu. You're a star. See you in five at the library?," Seifer asked.
"Yes, Sir," Fujin snapped to attention.
Seifer placed the phone down, turning to his computer and looking up SeeD's data files on everyone involved in the drugs scheme. He typed Selphie's name into the search engine.
The engine only came up with one find and Seifer clicked it. He was greeted with the picture of a brunette haired female with green eyes that could rival an emerald and a cheeky smile. He scanned the present information about the girl and jotted some of it down onto his notepad, seeing as his printer was fucked up from the day before:-
You'd think Seifer would've known a printer couldn't print out 7 sheets of writing if there was only 3 sheets of paper in the printer? In his fury, Seifer had literally booted the printer across the room before figuring out what was wrong when he saw the 'no paper in printer' message on the screen.
Seifer finished writing and placed the pen in his mouth whilst he read his notes over. He chewed on the pen nervously; maybe giving up his smoking habit would be much harder than just throwing it in the bin.
He snapped the notepad shut and held it in his arms as he got up and walked out of his office, on his way to meet Fujin in person to discuss Zell's next whereabouts without looking too suspicious.
After all, Zell wasn't dumb. Seifer knew that if the dealer saw him just pop up again at the next club outing, things would begin to look conspicuous, wouldn't they?
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
At 7:45am, Thursday morning, Selphie paraded into the warehouse, walking with a slight strut and fifteen minutes late as she always did and was. She smiled at Claire and Steven as she passed them on her way to meet Leo for her rota. She caught sight of the red head sat atop a box by the rear entrance to the warehouse; her back was turned to Selphie.
The brunette female suddenly had a mischievous thought: frightening the shit out of Leo first thing in a morning could cause a few laughs, especially for herself. Although pissing Leo off was a bad idea since she was a skilled kick boxer, Selphie couldn't resist the opportunity to catch Leo off guard.
Silently as she could, Selphie sneaked on her the balls of her feet towards Leo. She stepped carefully over smaller boxes and used larger ones for cover when the red head turned around slightly.
Selphie carried on until she was right behind the box, she was sure no-one had heard or seen her so, in confidence, she kept stood up. She slowly stretched her arms above her head, ready to bring them down on Leo's back, holding her breath and body still...
"You're late again, Selphie," Lpokepoke.
Selphie sighed disappointed, and dropped her arms, running in front of Leo to be given another telling off for being late. "How did you know I was there?" She asked.
Leo raised an eyebrow. "I can just tell. So, why you late this time?"
The brunette gave Leo the usual puppy dog eyes and held her hands behind her back like a school girl that'd done something wrong. She fumbled around in her head for a different excuse to last time. "Um...my dog ate my door keys so I had to climb out of the window which wouldn't open because, erm, my dog ate my window keys too. And then got stuck in traffic 'coz my dog ate the traffic lights."
"...And you expect me to believe that?" Leo mused.
Selphie thought for a moment then nodded unintelligently. "Yup."
Leo sighed and searched through her clipboard for Selphie's rota. She ripped it from the board and reached round to shove it down the back of Selphie's top. Selphie squealed and attempted to thread her hands up her top to grab at the sheet of paper.
Some other staff members of the warehouse stopped to watch and laugh at Selphie run around in circles at trying to get the rota sheet. The brunette snagged the paper from underneath her top and scowled playfully at Leo.
"Go on! Get to work," Leo commanded, pointing towards the brunette's post.
Selphie bounded off in the direction of the packing bay whilst skimming her eyes over her rota for the day.
"Ok! Which fucking smart ass put down this ecstasy shit on my agenda for today AGAIN?!!" Dave's voice echoed throughout the floor of the warehouse. "It's getting ridiculous now! Once was enough! Who the fuck is doing it?!"
Leo stifled a laugh and tried to hide her face bahind her clipboard in an attempt that failed. The red head had thought that Dave's reaction the first time she put that extra note on his agenda was funny, and kept adding the same note every morning to see how long Dave could last before snapping. He'd lasted until now and Leo had to make sure that she could disguise her laughs again.
No avail this time.
"Leo, you bitch! I'm gonna fucking kill you!" Dave noticed, pointed a finger and began a run after the red head. Leo jumped from the box and sprinted out of the warehouse and into the nearby street with Dave cursing at her whilst she laughed wildly.
Rinoa appeared on the balcony at the commotion, doing her usual security job when she wasn't assisting Zell. "Hey, what's goin' on?!" She shouted down.
Claire looked up and smiled at Rinoa. "Only Leo 'n Dave pratting about with the rotas, Rin. They jus' chased each other out onto the street. Nothing too bad to worry about."
"They're so childish I swear!" Selphie shouted from the other side of the warehouse.
Various staff members laughed at Selphie's comment; knowing what she was like. "As if, Selph!" Claire stated back.
Selphie waved her wrist and went back to fumbling around with a box.
"Well, make sure they come back soon," Rinoa called. "Zell has a shipment out on Friday that needs getting ready now."
Rinoa took an extra minute to scan the bottom area of the building in the hopes of finding Fujin. An ebony strand of hair fell in front of her eyes as she leaned over the balcony railings; she blew it away with a raised eyebrow. Her eyes caught upon most of the workers she knew by name, but she couldn't see her silver haired girlfriend.
"Hey, any of you guys see Fujin?" Rinoa called back to the staff in the hopes that they had seen her.
Most of the workers turned to each other and shook their heads. Holly Stratfrane stepped forward. "I saw her go out about ten minutes ago. I asked her where she was goin' 'coz I thought you might get worricoz coz she didn't tell ya, and she said she was goin' to see her Mom."
Rinoa's grip tightened on the railing. "Um, ok, thanks." She turned away from the balcony's edge and walked along the top floor.
She stopped outside the door to Zell's office and leaned against the wall for a moment, wrapping her arms around her waist and letting her head rest against the cool surface.
Fujin was lying.
Rinoa's facial features crumpled at why she was. Fujin's mother died when she was eight, or so Fujin told her lover. As far as Rinoa was concerned, as soon as Fujin got back, she was going to have more words with her.
Rinoa had experienced an incident with Fujin before and her lying:
Fujin had said she was going 'out' for a bit on a general visit to the town center to look around the shops. She returned three days later, along with a bruise on her left cheek and a sprained ankle. The silver haired female's excuse was that she was involved in a car accident and then stayed in a hotel until she felt she'd recovered from her injuries.
Rinoa saw this as a lie straight away; knowing that Fujin would've called her to say she was hurt if it was a true incident. And after that, Rinoa had taken care in finding out where Fujin was going when she went out.
The ebony haired woman was concerned again; for Fujin's safety mostly, but also due to the fact that another lie wakinaking shape.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
"So, ya found out when Mr. Almighty Dealer is heading next?"
Fujin looked up to Seifer as they sat in the corner of the library at SeeD headquarters. The silver haired female frowned; guilt was starting to claw away at her. She toyed with the edge of a piece of paper she held in her hands, ripping away at the sides.
Fujin straightened out the sheet of A5 paper she held and contemplated handing it to Seifer after all. "I don't like you calling him that, Sir. Even though we may be against him, Zell has become a friend of mine through the years that I've known him,"
Seifer sighed, beckoning for Fujin to hand over the paper containing the information on Zell's next whereabouts. She handed it over with a slight grudge. She hated doing this to Zell, she knew he was a good guy at heart and didn't want to ruin his life. But what choice did she have?
But when she signed the voluntary agreement with SeeD, she took on all the responsibilities that came with it. And that included grassing up on people she knew.
"Fuu, I thought you understood what was going to happen when you said you'd join me in this assignment?" Seifer asked, leaning forward over the oak table on his elbows.
Fujin nodded. "I do, Sir. But, it's...it's really even more heartbreaking when I think about what's goin' to happen to Rinoa..."
"Rinoa?"
"Yeah, RinMy gMy girlfriend. You know her don't you? You had her specially picked out for me to love falsely as a link to Zell. But I'll tell ya something else, *Sir*," Fujin gritted out the name Seifer made her call him.
Seifer shook his head. "Fujin, what did we say about this bef-"
"Over the years I've learned to properly love Rinoa." Fujin cut in, clenching her fists harshly. "I have feelings for her now, I'd willingly do anything for her. You didn't think about what you'd do when that happened did you? You just waited too long to retrieve your information, long enough for me to change my feelings for your so-called link. I love her and there's nothing that you can do about it!"
A single tear formed in Fujin's eye and ran down her cheek in a sullen stream. She squeezed her eyes shut, bringing her hands up to her head to rest in.
Seifer scowled and before the silver haired female even knew what'd happened, his large hand flew across her cheek, violently slapping her out of her sorrow. Fujin fell backwards out of the chair and landed on the carpet of the library floor. She lay hunched on the floor, holding a hand to her stinging and reddened cheek.
Seifer walked around the desk to loom over her. "You're pathetic...."
The SeeD pocketed the sheet of paper he still had in his hand and walked away. "What are you looking at?!" Seifer shouted at some SeeDs that'd just witnessed the event as he stormed off.
Fujin held her knees up to her chest, crying into them silently. Seifer had hit her before, but this time, she really felt the pain emotionally. She knew she couldn't just forget what had happened with Rinoa over the years, it ran too deep into her life, and she also kept in mind the hurt it was causing her because of the assignment; and what it would cause towards Rinoa. In fact, to all of the friends she had made at the warehouse if they ever found out what she did.
She pulled herself silently to her feet and walked out of the library; ignoring the remarks people made about her tears and the mark on her face.
"How the hell am I supposed to explain this to Rinoa.....?" Fujin mumbled, lightly running her fingers over the red hand mark on her pale cheek.
