February 9th to 11th
Feb 9th
Today I cried for the first time in years. They weren't sad tears. Instead they were happy tears. I never understand how someone could cry when they are happy but now understand.
After Melisa and I got home from work we went into the livingroom to play with Shawn. We were trying to get him to walk. He was standing on his own two feet and leaning against the wall. I sat on one side of the room and Melisa sat on the other side. We were both calling him.
He looked at his mom and then at me. Without waiting he took a few shaking steps in my direction. Melisa smiled saying words of encouragment to her son. He reached me and tossed his arms around my neck.
I couldn't stop the tears that ran out of my eyes. Shawn came to me and then hugged me. He cared about me. A child caring about me was something that had never happened before.
Feb 10th
I had a family. That made me happier than anything. I was willing to stay away from Garden forever if that meant nothing bad would ever happy to my family. Melisa told me last night while we were in bed that she wasn't a marrying woman. I didn't mind that. I wasn't a marrying man.
She did promise to make sure that if anything happened to her I would get Shawn.
Feb 11th
That last people I expected to see in Esthar were Selphie and Squall but I saw them today. Between getting off from work and heading to the park to do community service I took Shawn out for ice cream. Melisa was feeling tired so she stayed home.
I got Shawn and myself some ice cream and we sat together in one of the booths. Shawn just stuck his fingers in the ice cream and brought them to his mouth to lick off. I laughed watching him.
When the door opened to the Ice cream store I didn't even look. I was too busy eating my ice cream and watching Shawn. I didn't look up until I heard someone say my name. When I looked up I wished I hadn't. Selphie and Squall were standing there. Squall was glaring but Selphie was smiling.
"Aw!" she said seeing Shawn. "He is the cutest!"
"Hi to you too," I said surprised that she was being nice to me.
"Is he yours?" she asked sitting down across from me and Shawn.
"No," I shook my head. "He is my girlfriend's kid."
"He looks a lot like you," she said. "What's his name?"
"Shawn," I said. I looked at Shawn. "Say 'hi'."
"Hies," Shawn said in a small voice.
I looked at Squall who had been silent the whole time. Selphie glared at him as if silently scolding him.
"Hello Seifer," he said with tension in his voice.
"Hey Squall," I said. "Look I know we've never been friends but I am sorry about the hell I caused for you."
His eyes widdened in surprise. I guess he wasn't expecting me to say I was sorry.
"I'm glad we ran into you," Selphie said when no one said anything. "We are having a birthday party for Edea next Saturday and we know she'd love for you to be there."
"I'd love to go," I said.
I wasn't really sure about seeing Edea again. That last time I had seen her she wasn't herself. She was being controlled by Ultimecia.
"Ok!" she smiled. "It's going to be at Garden at six o'clock. Bring your girlfriend and Shawn."
Selphie said goodbye. Squall's glare lessened slightly. I guess that was his way of saying goodbye. They got their ice cream and left.
