Chapter 8
As Squall lead Seifer into the dark backyard, the blonde noticed the whole main floor of the house, and the windows upstairs were unlit. "Are you home alone, Squall?" Seifer asked as Squall lead him past the porch. It was obvious that the younger boy hesitated to answer the blonde's question.
"I am. Dad's at work. Every Saturday he works as a night-watchman at the docks. And Quistis is staying over at Charlie's." Squall finally answered, even if he felt uneasy about letting the older boy know it would be just the two of them. "Go through that door." Squall pointed at the narrow stairway, leading down to the basement door. Seifer eyed the unsafe-looking stairs and then turned to face Squall.
"You ain't gonna push me down or avenge me in any other way, are you now?" the blonde laughed nervously. Squall was silent for some time, a gloomy look spreading onto his face. He let his grey eyes travel down the stairs and up to Seifer. When the blonde noticed this, he gripped the handrail, feeling genuinely doubtful. "Squall?"
"No, Seifer. I--I've forgiven you. And if you don't trust me, I'll go first." Squall spoke and pushed Seifer aside. The brunette walked down the narrow stairs and opened the basement door. "Well, are you coming?" Seifer gave him a nod and followed the younger boy into the basement. Once inside, he sighed in relief, and let his green eyes travel around the room. Near the door where they came inside, were stairs leading upstairs. It was dark in the upper end. All the walls were covered with panelling, so the room didn't even look like it was actually the basement. In some corners there were tall piles of carton boxes, filled with old stuff, all clearly labelled. Next to the stairs was a worn, brown velvet sofa. It looked like it was from the 60's or something. In front of the couch was a small table, filled with comics and magazines and other miscellaneous stuff. On the opposite wall was a tall bookshelf, and in the middle was a brand new TV-set and some unnamed videocassettes. Seifer noticed the walls of the basement were all covered with old drawings and photos.
"Welcome to my humble abode, Seifer." Squall said and urged the blonde to step in from the doorway. "It's not as fancy as yours, but I hope it'll do." The brunette added, sounding somewhat mocking. Seifer narrowed his eyes and walked past Squall.
"I know what you're thinking, Squall; how you feel about me." he spoke as he walked around the room. Squall frowned in confusion. "You think I'm a spoiled rich kid, don't you?" Squall was confused. He didn't understand where Seifer was going with this. "Well, you're wrong. Just like I was when I first thought you were just a loser and a geek." Seifer continued. Squall blinked his eyes, not sure if he wanted to hear more.
"Y-you don't think like that anymore?" the younger boy asked hesitantly. He watched Seifer as the blonde neared the old photos on one of the wooden walls.
"You know I don't. I like you, Squall, remember?" Seifer chuckled and leaned closer to get a better view of one of the pictures. "Is this you?!" he laughed and pointed at the picture. Squall came to stand beside Seifer and felt a blush cover his face, as he noticed the photo.
"I-I---ah, yes, that's me..." the brunette admitted reluctantly and lowered his blushing face. Seifer glanced in Squall's direction and gave the boy a wide smile.
"Well, we all gotta take a bath sometime." the blonde chuckled and eyed the rest of the pictures. "I don't think we even have any pictures of me when I was a kid." Seifer said, mostly to himself.
"No?" Squall finally raised his face, hoping the blush had already disappeared.
"My dad never really had time to be with me. He was always at some business trip or in a meeting..." Seifer explained, the look on his face suddenly serious. "I think the only way to get his attention was to do something bad, like sneak into his study and mess up some important papers, preferably with sticky fingers." Squall was silent. He realized he was learning things about Seifer he never knew. The blonde lowered his face, and Squall could see he was getting lost in his thoughts. "But usually that wasn't such a clever thing to do... It wasn't good when dad got really mad." Seifer went quiet and turned his back on Squall. "Yeah, I think I remember now; how I got my scar."
Squall frowned, as he realized what Seifer meant. 'Sad... I had no idea he had an unhappy childhood. Living in a house like that, you'd think he was happier than anyone...' Before Squall could lay his hand on Seifer's shoulder, the older boy turned around, a faked smile on his lips.
"Well, Squall, are we gonna watch that movie you were talking about?" he asked, sounding a bit too cheery. Squall narrowed his eyes at the sudden change in the blonde's behaviour, but gave him a faint nod. He led Seifer over to the comfy-looking old couch and sat down next to him. The brunette felt uneasy sitting so close to the older boy, the gym hall-incident still clear in his memory. He was about to move, but decided to stay, as he took a quick glance in Seifer's direction, and noted the somewhat sad look on the blonde's face.
'I-I don't wanna make him feel bad by letting him see I still don't quite trust him, even if it's true..' After thinking it over, Squall leaned slightly closer, so that his left shoulder was touching with Seifer's. The blonde immediately noticed this and looked down. He met Squall's grey eyes, and felt his heart leap up to his throat when the brunette gave him a little smile. Before he could return the gesture, Squall had already directed all his attention to the big TV before them.
"I think we missed a part, but it's okay. I've seen this before." The brunette spoke and turned up the volume.
"This isn't one of those stupid romance-movies, is it?" Seifer asked and concentrated on the TV screen. Squall blinked his eyes and gave the older boy an amused smile.
"The Matrix? A romance-movie? Seifer, what planet are you from?" Squall chuckled.
"Well, I don't go to movies. Ever. All my time goes in practises and tournaments." The older boy defended himself. "I don't like it if I lose. And neither does my dad." he added with a lowered voice. Squall met Seifer's green eyes, but didn't know what to say. The room began to fill with awkward tension, but was broken by Seifer, who simply turned his face away to look at the TV. Squall did the same, and hesitantly leaned closer to the older boy's taller frame.
Seifer yawned and raised his arm to check the time from his digital wrist-watch. It was already past midnight. He glanced at the TV and noted the credits were finally rolling. 'What a confusing movie...'
"Well, Squall, I guess it's time for me to go now... Squall?" Seifer turned his face in Squall's direction, when he got no reply from the younger boy. He changed his position slightly, and raised his arms high above his head to stretch them. "I said it's time for-" the blonde was cut off in the middle of his sentence, when the brunette boy suddenly fell down onto his lap. "H-hey now! W-what are you--- Squall? Are you sleeping?" Seifer blinked his green eyes nervously and eyed Squall's sleeping form, resting in his lap. Slowly he brought his arms down, but didn't know where to lay them. "Oh damn... S-Squall? Won't you wake up?" Seifer whispered and used his other hand to gently shake the brunette by his shoulder. The only reaction he got from Squall, was a small whimper and a tight grip on his shirt. 'Shit. Am I gonna have to sleep here too? But I don't wanna wake him up... he looks so content and adorable.' Not knowing what else to do, Seifer closed his eyes and leaned back on the couch, and hesitantly lay his other hand on Squall's shoulder.
