Chapter 9

Seifer let his eyes flutter open when he felt something brush against his lips, but move away almost immediately. He realized he didn't feel Squall's weight on his thighs anymore, and was suddenly fully awake. After blinking the sleep from his eyes, Seifer noticed Squall was sitting in the other end of the sofa, eyeing him from under his brows, while fiddling with the overly long sleeves of his jumper. The blonde sat up and looked around. The TV wasn't on anymore, and by looking at the small windows just below the ceiling, he could tell it was probably an early morning outside. Seifer yawned and let his gaze return to Squall.

"Umm, hi. You're already awake..." the blonde said and gave a little wave with his right hand. "You fell asleep during the movie and-"

"I know, Seifer." came Squall's quick reply. The brunette lowered his face and ran his fingers through his messy and tangled hair.

"Is everything okay? You're acting a bit weird ..." Squall didn't answer Seifer, just gave a little nod. The blonde noticed the blush covering the younger boy's face, and that Squall was obviously avoiding his gaze. "Squall? What's up? Did something happen while I was asleep? Did you do something?" Seifer wondered aloud. If possible, the blush on the younger boy's cheeks deepened, this causing Seifer to really get confused. "Come on now, what'd you do? Or was it I who did something? I snored, right? Drooled?" Squall just shook his head and kept his gaze on the brown, fitted carpet of the floor. Seifer shrugged and was about to get up from the sofa. "Well, if you say so. I think I should go now." The blonde noted, but was pulled back down by Squall.

"Wait!" the younger boy whispered and tightened his grip on Seifer's sleeve. "I--did do something." he continued with an almost unnoticeable voice. Seifer blinked his green eyes, filled with confusion. Squall pushed the blonde against the arm rest, and hesitantly climbed on top of the older boy.

"Squall what-"

"I did this" the brunette boy whispered and swallowed hard, then without a warning, pressed his lips against Seifer's. Before the blonde could do anything, Squall withdrew and stood up. The blush returned to his cheeks in a second, and he realized he was holding his breath, waiting to see Seifer's reaction.

'Did that just happen?' Seifer asked himself and blinked his eyes in disbelief. When he it finally sank in that Squall had truly given him a kiss, the blonde was blushing almost as furiously as the boy standing before him. Slowly Seifer forced himself to look at Squall. He could hear the deep exhalation the brunette boy made when he stood up from the sofa, and walked to stand before Squall. "Did you just-"

"I did."

"Why?"

"I--I don't know..." the younger boy stammered and lowered his face.

"I thought you wanted to be my friend?" Seifer noted.

"I do, Seifer, but-"

"Friends don't kiss each other..." The blonde made a second note, a slight smile tugging his lips upwards. Squall was silent, unable to think of anything to say in his defence. When he finally lift his face, he realized Seifer was nearing him, obviously to kiss him.

"No... I-I don't think we should..." Squall leaned backwards and pressed his hand against the older boy's chest to stop him.

"Come on, let me kiss you." Seifer persuaded and ignored the hand, pressing against his chest. Squall shook his head and kept leaning back.

"W-we're not even properly friends, Seifer." Squall stammered, trying make his voice sound firm. The blonde realized it was time to stop. He straightened himself and gave Squall an approving smile.

"You're right. Let's form a friendship first? And maybe then we can---see if it develops---into something more?" Seifer suggested and gave the brunette a questioning look. Squall let out a relieved sigh and nodded his acceptance. "Good. We're now officially friends then." Seifer chuckled and glanced at his wrist-watch. "It's a little past seven. I think I'm gonna go now... I'm dying to get some coffee and a smoke." Seifer informed, and took a stride towards the door leading outside.

"I-I could make some if you want...?" Squall hurried after the older boy. Seifer turned around and shook his head.

"Nah, I can make my own coffee, and I know you don't have any cigarettes to offer." Seifer said, a smirk playing on his lips. "Besides, your dad will probably be home soon..."

Squall refused to let the disappointment show on his face, and muttered his agreement. 'Seifer is right. Dad will be home soon...' The blonde opened the door and walked up a few stairs.

"Well, buddy, I'll see you tomorrow then, a-at school." Seifer spoke, and suddenly realized what huge problems they would be facing after the weekend. 'Shit. I forgot about Mike and the others...' Seifer didn't let Squall see his wavering, and instead forced his lips into a smile. "Bye."

"Bye!" Squall watched as the blonde ran up the stone stairs. When Seifer had disappeared into the backyard, he closed the door and hurried upstairs. The brunette boy made his way into the kitchen and leaned against the sink to see outside, onto the driveway. He watched Seifer cross the street. The morning was perfect. Blue, cloudless sky and all. Squall felt a smile make its way to his face.

'I can't believe this. W-we're friends... I, Squall Leonhart am friends with Seifer Almasy! Maybe now the bullies will leave me and Zell alone too!' Squall rejoiced, not knowing his happiness would be short-lived.

It was finally Monday morning. Squall stepped out from the yellow school buss, and waited for Zell to squeeze himself out as well. They let the flow of students guide them into the school building. Squall kept glancing around, hoping to run into Seifer before his first period. He had a mixture of nervousness and excitement twirling inside his stomach. 'I can't wait to see the look on Mike's face when he realizes Seifer is on my side now...' Squall smiled inwardly.

"What's with you this morning? It's Monday; you're supposed to look all gloomy and tired." Zell finally asked, not understanding why his friend was cheerier than usual. Squall ignored him when he finally spotted Seifer, standing in front of the notice-board. "Great, what a nice combination. Those guys and a Monday morning." Zell frowned when he, too, saw Seifer and the other jocks, standing just a few meters away. The frown on his face deepened when he realized Squall was actually walking towards the group of bullies. "Hey Squall, we have english over here!" he called after the brunette boy, unable to stop his friend. 'What the hell does he think he's doing?! Doesn't he know he's walking straight to his doom?'

Squall was feeling surprisingly confident when he neared Seifer and the group of his friends, surrounding the tall blonde. He had dreamed of this moment; he'd finally get to pay back his tormentors. "Hi Seifer." Squall greeted and stopped in front of the blonde. It wasn't Seifer however, who answered him, but Mike.

"Well hi, twiggy! What the fuck do you think you're doing? I don't think we gave you permission to disturb us." Mike jeered.

Farther away, Zell tightened the grip on his school bag and let out a sigh. 'I can't watch this!' the blonde boy turned his back at the scene, unable to force himself to watch his friend get a whipping.

Squall blinked his eyes, but was able to maintain his composure. "I wasn't talking to you..." he replied calmly, and turned his face in Seifer's direction. The blonde boy, however, refused to meet his gaze, and just kept looking away. "Seifer? I-" Squall began, but was interrupted by Mike, who poked him with his hand.

"Didn't you hear me? Get lost already, before I make you!" the older boy threatened and gave Squall a meaningful look. "You don't want to start your week with a black eye, do you now?"

When Seifer still refused to meet Squall's eyes, the brunette began to understand what was going on. He could feel a lump form in his throat, and knew his eyes were getting wet. The sudden anger boiling inside him made his body heat rise.

"Oh please, if you're gonna cry, go do it in the girl's room! No one here will miss you." Mike laughed cruelly when he spotted the tears forming in the younger boy's eyes. Squall balled his hands into fists and glared at Seifer with narrowed eyes.

"No one? Seifer, is this true?!" the brunette boy had to ask, even if he could already guess what the answer would be. He didn't care if his voice was shaky and the bullies could hear it. He just had to know. When Seifer finally turned to face Squall, the blonde was taken aback when he saw the anger, literally glowing from Squall's face. He turned to look at his friends, then Squall again, faltering with his decision. When Seifer finally made up his mind, the look on his face was serious. Unable to look Squall in the eye, he kept his shameful gaze on the floor.

"Yes." was all Seifer said.

Squall let out a shaky exhale and blinked his eyes, his surroundings suddenly becoming misty. All the sounds were distant and he didn't even see the crowd surrounding them. Blinded by anger and the feeling of being betrayed, the brunette simply brought his fist up and hit Seifer in the face as hard as he could. "You two-faced, lying asshole!" Squall cried.

Seifer stumbled backwards, but was caught by his friends before he could hit the floor. "Ahhh fuck!!" the blonde cried out and held his left eye, unable to comprehend the fact that Squall had punchem stm straight in the eye. The whole school hall was silent, the atmosphere waiting. By and by, low whispers began to sound in the air. No one could believe the fact that someone like Squall had actually hit Seifer Almasy. Seifer shook his head and blinked his eyes, his vision blurred. When he managed to recover enough, he met Squall's death-glare, and realized just how badly he had hurt the younger boy. Before he could say anything, Mike pushed him aside and took a step towardsall.all. The brunette boy backed off and swallowed, finally realizing what he'd just done. All the previous confidence he'd felt was now gone, making ll fll feel helpless.

"You. Are. So. DEAD!" Mike growled and gripped Squall by the collar of his shirt, lifting him partly up in the air.

"No. Don't touch him." Seifer interrupted, his hand still covering his left eye, the tone of his voice menacing. Mike turned his face and blinked his eyes in confusion.

"But the little freak hit you! He deserves to-"

"I said, don't touch him!" Seifer repeated, looking at his friend with a serious face. Reluctantly Mike let go of Squall's shirt. The younger boy realized this was his only chance to escape the situation, and hurried away from the bully. When Mike was about to go after him, Seifer grabbed him by his shoulder. "Let him go." he growled and prevented Mike from going after Squall.

"B-but-"

"You don't touch him ever again, you hear me? Not ever!" the blonde hissed and gave Mike and the rest of the bullies a meaningful look. When they finally nodded, Seifer released his grip and ran after Squall, leaving a bunch of bewildered students behind him. He knew the gossip-mill was already starting to twirl, but Seifer didn't care.

"Yeah, well you're not one of us anymore! You've become a damn softy! Defending the freakeifeeifer! You're a disgrace!" Mike called after Seifer. "Y-You're just a loser like he is!"

The school halls were all empty of students. Seifer knew his first period had already started, but he didn't care if he missed it. He also knew he should go see the nurse and get his eye fixed, but he was determined to find Squall first. 'Damn. That was quite a mean punch... Didn't realize he had it in him.' Seifer rubbed his swollen cheek and pushed the bathroom door open. The room was filled with the heart-breaking sound of someone crying. Seifer knew very well who the source was. He stepped in and stood still, and tried to listen to which cubicle the crying was coming from. He followed the sound and finally stood before the only locked door in the room. 'What am I gonna say to him? Once again I screwed up and there's nothing I can say to fix things... I'm such an idiot! Of course Squall is more important than my status in school, just like I told Rinoa. Once again I just failed to see that...' Quietly Seifer knocked on the door. The crying stopped immediately and was replaced by total silence. "Squall? Are you in there?" the blonde whispered and listened for a reply. "I understand if you don't wanna talk to me... And you're probably through with listening to my apologies as well..." Seifer kneeled down on the floor and pressed his ear against the locked door. All he could hear from the other side, were muffled sobs. "I totally deserved the black eye you gave me. I can't believe even myself what a shallow bastard I am.I don't know why I took Mike's side... I realize now reputation and being popular isn't everything. S-sorry." Seifer was silent again and waited for Squall's reply which never came. The blonde got up from the floor and let out a sigh. "Well, I'm gonna go now..." Seifer said and made his way to the toilet door. "Oh, and I made sure that Mike and the others will never bother you again..." the blonde added before stepping out. 'There's nothing more I can do... He'll never forgive me.'
