Chapter 9
Modeoheim is an abandoned town still. The buildings have gone into further disrepair. The only building Zack feels wont fall on their heads is the Inn, which is surprisingly the only one in decent condition but still shabby. Being so up north, wind and snow did its best to try and hide the once small town/resort. Its amazing to think people once came here. The snow covered with many strange tracks.
Once again Cid has opted to stay on the airship with Fianna this time. Perhaps that is for the best. The airship seems the safest spot for now. Zack can’t decide whom Cid is more married to... a person, and its still debatable if its Vincent or Shera, or to his airship.
Zack can see his past self going along the path. His self before... the scar? Yes, this is close to where he got his scar. The base itself is past the buildings. Only needs to nod to Cloud before heading past the buildings, down the path he recalls quite well. Past the buildings, the base comes into view, the lights seen before they even get to the front door. Zack follows the slanted path to the door, forgetting Cloud and Vincent are still with him. Not sure if someone is here, but knows there was once someone. Someone who turned everything on for a purpose. Strange how he can see himself now going through the concrete passage like a ghost before them. Up the stairs... to where he ran into Cloud and Tseng. It felt almost as if he was watching the events of another person or another life.
Cloud, “ Zack, are you okay? “
Zack comes back to now, “ Oh sorry. “ The place seems just as dead quiet as the last time he was here. Just past the door is where Angeal died.
Cloud, “ I’m sorry... “
Zack shrugs, “ Its been so long. “
Vincent, “ What happened here? “
Zack, “ Genesis and Angeal based here for a while, I think. They were like Sephiroth, experiments with Jenova cells. The doctors did something different so they weren’t as stable. Or that's the impression I got from Hojo. “
Vincent, “ You spoke to Hojo about it? “ Cloud seems even interested.
Zack, “ Well, yeah.. The two raided ShinRa HQ and I had to guard him. The guy had a habit of making me fight simulations... Sometimes I think he was trying to kill me. Anyway, he said some stuff about them. That's about it. “
Cloud has trouble believing that, “ So what were they doing? “
Zack, “ They took alot of the soldiers who were loyal to them and turned them into clones. “
Vincent, “ They could produce clones of themselves? “
Zack, “ Yeah, Genesis could share his dna with others but it made him more and more unstable. Angeal could share and take DNA. “ Movies into the next room, “ Its here he absorbed some monsters and fought me. He insisted he was a monster.... I never thought so. “
Cloud, “ Reeve says there has been a strange monster migration in this direction. Yet, no sign of monsters. Perhaps they kept going to some other location? “
Zack, “ Lets look around. There has to be more to this base. “
And so they split up, each going their own direction. Cloud deciding to explore more of the east side of the base. Honestly, doesn’t think the monsters are inside the base or even went once inside, Something drew them here and may well still be around. The rooms were not that dim, having some decent windows and the lights were set up for lab work. The rooms though void of anything really useful.
A silhouette in the next room. For a moment, Cloud winders if he found Legion or something else? Slowly approaches; giving a wary peek inside. Aerith, with her back to him.
Cloud, “ Aerith... “ Crossing the room to her. “ Why are you here? “
Aerith turns around to face him, “ Cloud, I knew you would come. “ She smells so good. Reminds him of a fiend of flowers. “ I need to warn you. The danger is closer then you know.”
Cloud, “ Is it Legion? “
Aerith, “ Yes... He is close. He won;t stop till he gets what he wants. I fear it it may bring about something or someone terrible. I fear he may use one of the others to get there. “
Cloud alarmed for the sake of his friends, “ Who? “
Aerith, “ I’m sorry, Cloud but that is not the real Zack. “ The very words a blow to him... It has to be Zack! Right? Why should she lie? “ He thinks he is Zack. In every way possible he is Zack but you know the Real Zack died. He is with me in the life stream. “
Cloud turns away. Deep down he knows this can’t be the real Zack. Its just so easy to pretend it is. “ Its the Jenova cells, isn’t it? “ Feels her very warm hand on his shoulder.
Aerith, “ Yes, they recreated Zack from the memories Hojo gave him and everyone else's memories. Legion is going to try to control him soon. “
Cloud turns back, feeling lost, “ What should I do? “
Aerith, “ You must take him to the City of the Ancients. Tell no one what I have told you. You promise? “ Cloud gives her his promise, “ Once there you must do what I tell you. “ Giving instructions in careful, sweet whispers, “ I’ll meet you there... “ and she steps out of the room.
Cloud, “ Wait! “ The next room is empty of anyone.
Cloud walks back to look for the others. Vincent is the first he finds. The northern part of the lab is also empty. There is no sign of Zack. Then he recalls the words of Aerith. Doesn’t notice right off Vincent checking his cellphone for another cryptic message.
Cloud, “ We need to find Zack. “
Vincent puts the new message away, “ Why? Is he in danger? “
Cloud frowns, how he wishes he can be honest, “ I’m just worried. “
They find Zack outside of where he was suppose to be. He apparently found more tracks going south eastward. That is the same direction of the Forgotten City.
Zack, “ Oh hey! Whatever was here is long gone. “
Cloud nods, “ There is somewhere I think we should go. “
Zack perks, “ Oh? Where’s that? “
Cloud, “ In that direction of a Forgotten City. The ancient people used to live there. “
Zack, “ Aerith’s people? “ When they look surprised, “ Hey she once told me she was an ancient. I did listen when she talked. “
