We Could Be Gone

Excitate vow e somno, liberi mei.

Excitate vow e somno, liberi fatali.

Seifer gasped in pain, unbearable pain. It felt like his entire body was one giant ache. He was hanging from his wrists by two ropes. Blood ran down his arms and chest from the rope burns at his wrists. His breath was short, a panting that was almost to the point of painful wheezing. He was hanging the midst of the desert near the d district prison. He had only a pair of boxer shorts sparing him from total nudity. But that didn’t bother him, it was blistered sunburn and the blood pooling in the hollows above his collarbones. He looked beyond the pain and watched the crowd gathered a couple of meters away from him.

Surgite.

Squall gasped at the word came in as to Seifer’s whereabouts.
“Selphie, ship out NOW!” Squall ran for the Ragnarok, Selphie and Zell on his heels. Irvine was back at Galbadia garden after breaking Selphie’s heart. Rinoa was back with her father after giving up on making Squall straight. Quistis was back to teaching classes. Selphie flew into the pilots seat as Squall closed and locked all entrances as Zell checked the ship for any unasked travellers. They were soon flying for the d district prison. The crowd was noticeable from high in the sky. Squall left the cockpit and stood on the landing dock, punching unlock codes in as Selphie was descending to the sandy ground. As the Ragnarok touched ground, the landing ramp opened and sent a cloud of dust whirling around them as Selphie ran after Squall with Zell beside her.

Seifer looked up as the crowd stirred, muttering amongst themselves. The sight of a brunette head with a shining blue blade made pain lance though Seifer’s entire body once again as he gasped in surprise and hope. The crowd parted for the running SeeD Headmaster. His face was hard and cold enough to shatter anyone that dared face him. Lion Heart was glowing painfully bright, reacting to the anger surging through its owner. Squall slowed to a walk, coming so that he was close enough that a deep breath would make his chest touch Seifer’s stomach. Seifer let his head fall forward to look down into Squall’s upraised face.
“You came.”
“I’ll always come for you.” As Squall spoke, Zell boosted Selphie up on his back so that she could cut one arm free. Squall placed both hands on Seifer’s upper-chest, holding him still so that Selphie could cut the other wrist free. Squall caught him as he fell from his crucifix. Seifer collapsed in Squall’s arms, ragged painful sobs racked his body as he shook with the fear that had been his companion ever since he had come out of time compression.

“Don’t worry Seifer. I’m here now.” Squall spoke as he carried the blonde back to the Ragnarok by himself. Selphie was leading to open the loading ramp and Zell guarded their backs, so that if the crowd turned ugly, Squall would have a chance to get Seifer safely out of the way before he had to fight.
“Squall oh Squall, I don’t remember anything. I remember attacking Deling at the TV station, but everyone is saying that I was the sorceress’s knight. I wasn’t! I didn’t do all the things they said I did. I couldn’t have, surely I’d remember if I had?”
“Don’t worry, I’ll fix everything. You just concentrate on getting better.”
“I only attacked Deling for you Squall. You have to understand that I was afraid for you. I didn’t want you getting hurt.”
“I know Seifer. I love you, remember? Who else would know you better than me?”
“I love you too Squall. Oh how I love you…”
“Rest now. We’ll get you back to Garden. Everything will be fine I promise.”
“I’ll try.”
