What IF Cid met Kain?
By Sailor Poison

The first thing he notices is the pain. Not a cramp or soreness that one might expect o wake up with but pain that throbs though his body. Well, really along one side of his body and his head. For a moment, the pain makes him both dizzy and sick to the stomach. The smell of grass is the very next thing to come to his attention. Mixed in is some wild onion. A hand goes and finds a potion among his supplies. Bitter tasting but the key to soothing away his pain.

Cid slowly sits up wincing at the pain that is slowly fading from his body. His attention focusing on his surrounding area. On a small grassy plateau beside a much larger mountain. One can hear some fighting not far off. One path lead down to a valley, he thinks that is where the noise is coming from. Infront of him was cave that lead into the mountain itself.

What happened? Very good question. Cid gathers his thoughts to recall what he was doing before he woke up here. Yeah, he can remember fighting with his friends. Then... what happened? Someone is coming up the path now anyway and this distracts the pilot. Cid slowly stands up feeling only a little stiff. Bends over to grab his spear in time to see an armored man coming along the path. Hard at first to see his face under the dragon helmet.

Both pause to stare at each other. Maybe its the resemblance to each other that causes the silence and staring. Cid knows well enough what he looks like to recognize the features of another. This stranger is more noble the he though. The way he walks, stands or even breaths is the way of a man breed well. Knows that he shows no such things himself. His clothes are worn from time and battle. Scruffy ontop of that. Knows he is being judged that first impression.

Cid, “ Hello, there!”

Man nods back and replies in a rich voice, “ Good day, sir. Strange to meet one here of all places. Are you a phantom to distract me? Or a guide?”

Cid has to laugh, “ Hell no! I got separated from my friends and ended up here. By the way where the fuck are we?” Cid can’t help but standing straighter.

Man, “ This is the Mount Ordeals! Well away from any town or place. What name do you go by, stranger?” Speculation of this oddly spoken and crude man is clear.

Cid, “ Cid Highwind! One of the best damn pilots if not the best!”

Man taken back and not amused, “ Sir, Unless you are family I never met I hope you tell the name correct!”

Cid pauses to look for a cigarette, upon finding it lights and answers, “ I am Cid Highwind! Had that name all my life! Who the fuck are you?”

Man. “ Strange days... “ He mutters before answering, “ My name is Kain Highwind. I come to take the Ordeal within here mountain.”

Cid goes back to looking around and thinking. He remembers now what happened. A fight ontop some jungle cliffs not far from Cosmo Canyon. Cloud and the others heard some weapon was there. Cid went along for the hell of it, an excuse to do something aside baby-sit the airship, when they were attacked by an ambush. One monster almost got Cloud, if not for Cid’s swift Cover materia.

Why the hell does he wear that damn thing anyway?! Cause Cloud said it was his turn. Plus that weird ass materia no one knows what function it does. Possible both materia might have sent him here. To Meet this guy who shares the same last name? Was this even his world?! Most likely not his world.

Cid sits down because his head is hurting, “ Shit... “

Till now, Kain has been getting ready to go in the cave. His attention turns to the strange guy who seems to be in a true funk. The guy didn’t seem all that bad.

Kain, “ Are you well?”

Cid, “ I’ve been better.”

Kain, “ I must attend the Ordeal. Perhaps you can come along? This place might hold the answer to whatever problem you hold. If not, I can help you find your friends.”

Cid who has nothing better to do agrees, “ Ordeal, er? Heck, sounds like fun! “

Kain apparently finds that amusing as he laughs and helps the pilot back to his feet. Something about him makes it little easier to ignore his odd speech.

Kain, “ If being tested for your true self is fun then yes we shall have fun.”

Cid wonders why this sort of test would be needed at all. Then again this stranger seems to bear some burden.

Cid, “ What brings you here anyway?”

Kain, “ I have done such terrible things.. betrayed the people I love and almost destroyed this world as a puppet.”

Cid, “ No shit? My friend is going through the same thing! Well, sorta the same thing.”

Kain looks back little surprised, “ I was unaware the world is back in peril!”

Cid laughs, “ No! I come from another world! I think... anyway, Cloud got controlled by a nasty asshole and , well, we are trying to stop the villain. Not that I did much better with my life.”

Kain, “ I feel for your friend.... “

Cid quite serious, “ No worry about him! I’m gonna help him and all that. I have to get back to do that too!”

Kain, “ Indeed, I can tell you will.” Laughs little.

They quickly come upon monsters. Cid is great with handling a spear but its something else to see a true Dragoon in action. The style and grace alone almost distract him from his own fighting. In turn, Kain is also impressed with this man though , a born Dragoon himself, is tad more crude in skills.

Kain, “ I see you are a dragoon too, sir. I wish you would have told me this sooner!”

Cid,” Dragoon?” Confusion apparent.

Kain, “ Why have you never heard of the Mighty Dragoon? Fighter who is kin to Dragoon? Our leaps are as mighty as our lances! I can tell you a have the soul of one but your training is lacking some.”

Cid, “ I never been trained to be such. I just do what comes natural to me!”

Kain again taken back, “ You must certainty be of my blood! To be that good and self taught! Yet, you could do with improvement.”

Cid snorts, “ I do just fine!” Then asks because he has to know, “ What else could I do?”

Kain, “ Just tips only a teacher could show... “

Has Cid stand and readjusts his stance and hold of the spear. Whispers the tricks and advice as he has Cid mock fight. For the first time, Cid felt like a kid being taught by his father. Something that leaves him unable to get bad at what is being told to him. Never has he ever felt this was with his own father.

Cid, “ Yeah.. I see what ya mean. Damn, it is easier!”

Kain, “ I hear the monsters around the corner.”

The following battle, Cid does test the lessons out. Amazing how much easier his fighting comes. Less stress on his legs and arms. More energy afterward even! The look of pride in Kain’s eyes truly makes things even better.

Kain with a grin and twinkle, “ Now, lets be off to the top!”

They both make their way towards the top. Oddly the challenges seem to be set for two people. Some of them more for Kain and the others more set for Cid. This places well expected them from the get go.

The challenge Cid hates the most ends up being place where they have to set blocks up in design mirroring the other. Each moving a corresponding block at the same time or it doesn’t budge.

Along the way, they talk about themselves. Kain tells more of how he was used to betray his best friend Cecil. Cid, in turn, tells about the space mission and Shera. Kain disapproves of how Cid treated her but the pilot quickly adds he is planning to make it up to her. Cid talks about his trip to space. Kain at first has trouble believing this tale, he does envy him much. All Dragoons wish to be fly in some way, which is why they leap so high. Something about Kain changes as they travel. Cid can feel a change within himself as well. Nothing like power but how he thinks and feels.

The very top there is a small cave. Cid knows he can’t go inside. This is where he must stop. Its kinda sad knowing somehow one must part from a friend even if they only know each others for a short time. Cid feels as if Kain always been in his life somehow. His pausing at the cave entrance goes noticed,

Kain, “ Come, friend, we are almost there!”

Cid sighs and steps back, “ I can’t! This is your Ordeal after all.”

Kain is sad to hear, “ But you will just need to wait and... “

Cid, “ Hell, I think its almost time for me to go home.”

Kain, “ Very well, Cid. Something of you reminds me of the airship builder back where I used to call home. Yet.. No you are more. Thank you for being here.”

Cid, a bit embarrassed, “ But I didn’t do much! Heck, I should be thanking you!”

Kain, “ Because of you I think I know what I must do with my life. I shall become a teacher so that the Dragoons will never truly fade. I shall protect this world’s future. “

Cid reaches out to shake hands but finds himself being pulled into a strong hug. In such a short time, this man, who is maybe around his own age, became like a father to him. So Cid withdraws the odd materia and hands it to him.

Cid, “ I have no idea what the fuck it does but please keep it to remember me.”

Kain, “ I shall treasure this.”

Then Kain goes into the cave. Whatever it holds, it’s for Kain alone to see. Cid feels so damn dizzy again. His body falls backward, falling into darkness and what seems an eternity of space. Even his mind seems to ellipse into the darkness.

Light appears as he opens his eyes. High grass of the jungle covered cliff obscure him from the view of the searchers. Cid feels little ache but surprisingly better considering he can see how far it is from where the fight started. Quite a fall indeed. The others are still looking for him.

Cid, “ You guys can’t find jack shit can you?!”

Cloud and Vincent hurry over relieved to see Cid is alive and not injured. Also surprised that Cid is hardly hurt.

Cloud, “ Are you okay?”

Cid, “ Yeah, just a headache.”

Cloud skeptical, “ But you fell from such a distance... are you sure you are okay?”

Cid, “ Yeah, I am! Now lets get back to looking for whatever!”

Cloud accepts this rather quick because he would rather worry about equipping the team then injuries. Vincent gives Cid one more lingering glance before following Cloud.

Cloud, “ After you fell, we managed to kill the beast but I think there is another nearby.”

Vincent, “ We need to stay alert.”

No sooner then that is said the second beast shows up. Creature that is like a cat and snake combined but has wings of a bat upon its back. Wings too deformed to even work so it must charge on scaling feet. The fight goes similar to last time, though this time Cloud keeps clear of cliffs. Cid leaps into the air diving down upon its back striking the spinal while Vincent aims for the eye trying to blow its brains out. His bullet hits true as the creature falls down dead. They never seen his attacks so smooth and graceful. Then again, Cloud quickly forgets it in favor of something ever greater.

Cloud, “ Wow! I found some gil!”

Cid, “ How the fuck do these creatures carry gil anyway?”

Cloud shrugs and pockets his findings.

Vincent, “ Chief, your skills have improved.”

Cid, “ You think?” feigning ignorance.

Vincent, “ Maybe we should drop you off more cliffs.” Smiling in that odd way of his when he is making a joke.

Cid laughs just the same, “ Gee thanks.”

Cloud, “ Hey Cid, still have that weird materia?”

Cid checks his pockets to find the materia is gone. Then again, he knew it would be.

Cid, “ Must have lost it.”

Cloud, “ Darn it! Just when I wanted to try it out.”

Vincent, “ There is still that weapon we need to find.”

Cloud properly distracted, “ OH yeah.”

Well, the rest pretty much is history for Cid. They find the sought weapon and, indeed, save the world. Cid wonders sometimes if Kain found his new life enjoyable.
