Phone Tag

disclaimer: These characters are not mine.  The copyright belongs to Square/Enix and they were created by Nomura.

summary: Fun with cell phones. (I'll think up a better summary later, I swear)

a/n: Not to be taken seriously.  This is what happens when Iggy needs a break from the romance/sentimentality of her usual fandom pairings and just wants to have fun and be a bit of a playful perv.  Post-AC?  Sure.  Whatever.

“Phone Tag”

You have seven new messages.

Cloud listened to the familiar voices, subtle entreaties of companionship.  He was getting better about keeping in touch, but still there were days that he just wanted to be left alone.  Days like today….

“Oi, you changed your number again!” The voice was full of mocking dismay.  “C’mon Cloud…I’m starting to get the feeling that you’re trying to blow me off.  I’m getting sick of tracking you down; it’s a lot of petty bullshit.”

Cloud was half-tempted to throw the cell phone across the wastelands.  Instead he stabbed at one button and then made the call.  He didn’t have time to wonder why he still had Reno’s number on speed dial.

Three sharp, metallic rings sounded in Cloud’s ear before, “hey.  Took you fucking long enough.”

“How the hell do you keep getting my number?” Cloud retorted in lieu of greeting.

He heard Reno’s amusement, could imagine that smart-assed smirk all too clearly, “That’s a pretty dumb question, Strife.  What kinda spy would I be if I couldn’t track down a simple goddamned phone number?”

Cloud sighed softly, "Okay, fine.  What do you want?  And if you’re calling on Rufus’s behalf you can hang up right now and tell him to get in touch with me on his own time.”

For a long moment that was silence on the other end.

Reno?”

“Hey Cloud,” The Turk drawled lazily, “Anyone ever tell you that you have real good timing?”

“Hm?” Cloud felt his eyes narrowing, “why?”

”Heh, I was just getting off when you called.”

Cloud rolled his eyes and cut off the call, in no mood to be fucked with.  Asshole, He glowered at the phone in his hand, talk about having a one-track mind….

The phone rang and Cloud checked the ID before answering.  Predictably, it was Reno calling back.

Cloud considered dropping the cell phone into the nearest gorge, but didn’t really feel like having to deal with all the bullshit that went along with getting a new one.  With fingers tapping an annoyed rhythm on the handlebars of his bike, Cloud answered the phone.

Reno,” He said the man’s name like a warning.  Behave or else.  I’m sick of this shit, Cloud fumed.

“You’re a fucking hypocrite, y’know that?” He could hear the laughter underneath Reno’s words.  “I don’t know what kinda pervy thoughts you were having but I was talking about getting off work.  Now don’t you feel like an asshole?”

“No,” Cloud replied coolly, “I’m not stupid, Reno.  Why don’t you stop playing around with me?  Or does Rufus have you on too short a leash?”

The sudden silence from Reno’s end was almost deafening.

“You teasing me, Strife?” Reno broke the quiet first.

“I don’t tease, Reno. That’s your thing, not mine.  I’m dead serious.”

Even if he hadn’t been sure before, he knew that, as soon as he spoke those words, he wasn’t bluffing and he certainly wasn’t teasing.  Cloud was sick of Reno toying with him.

“About damned time,” Reno muttered.  “So how quick can you get your ass back to Midgar?”

“Quick enough,” Cloud replied curtly.

“Don’t keep me waiting.”

The line went dead, and Cloud sighed as he ended the call and switched his phone on “vibrate” for the noisy drive back to the city.  I thought that I wanted to be alone today, Cloud mused.

Yeah well, I’m also tired of leaving things undone.

Finis.
