Before the Big Game

---------------

Tonight was the night. Tonight was the big Blitzball tournament final. The Zanarkand Abes versus the Zanarkand Duggles. It would be a blast. And the good thing was: I would be right in the middle of it.

Yeah, that's right, I was one of the few female Blitzballer-players. That was mostly because... well, people thought women were just not cut out for it. I learned that, even when I was just beginning to practice it. More often than not, I was looked upon and heard phrases like "It's a nice hobby, but you won't make it far." or "Don't push yourself to hard"... just because I am female!

I hate that prejudice. True, Blitzball requires a great deal of physical strength and control, but even that is something anyone, regardless of gender, can achieve in time. I fought on and eventually, I made it into the star team of the Zanarkand Abes. You could say I was proud of her achievement. Not only did it prove that girls could do just as well... no, I also took another important step out of the shadow of her father. Or so I thought. In the end, it turned out that now people began to think of me even more as his progenitor.

Still, I took consolation in the fact that those fans outside, screaming my name, were here because of my own skills and NOT because of my father. I figured it was about time to go out and get going, so I looked one last time in the mirror to check if every part of my Blitzball-uniform was where it belonged. Mind you, I'm not doing it for fashion or anything. I just cannot afford to be hampered by a loose sleeve during a match or whatever.

Satisfied with it, I slapped my cheeks once to wake my spirits and then leave my room. You know, that sort of thing you do to cheer yourself up. You should try it out yourself sometime.

Outside on my houseboat in the harbour of Zanarkand, some fans are already waiting for me. About a dozen people, not a wholebunch, but that is still more than other people can claim. Most of them are female. I was an idol of sorts for young women (even though I'm just barely eightteen years old myself, I'm already called an idol?), so it's natural for some of them to show up.

Of course, they all demanded me to sign the Blitzballs they had brought along with them. After chatting with a few of them, I was about ready to go when a group of three little guys asked me for my autograph as well. And I'm really not the kind of person to tell a fan off, so I wrote down my name for the little boy on his Blitzball: Tida.

Finally, it seemed as if everyone was satisfied. "Well then, gotta go. Cheer for me, will ya?", I asked them, and yup, they cheered for me even now. But before I could leave, the three kids blocked my path. "1...2...", they began.

"Teach us how to blitz!"
"Teach us how to blitz!"
"Teach us how to blitz!"

The unison of the three boys frightened me a bit, to be honest. Nervously, I scratched the side of my head. That's what I usually do when I don't know just what I should say. "Well... I guess... maybe tonight? You know, after that game?", I offered weakly.

But a voice behind me called out. "You can't tonight.", it said simply. I looked back, only to see a hooded boy standing among the crowd. I wasn't really wondering why he would say that, but at that moment, I was thankful for it. "Yeah, right. So maybe... tomorrow?"

"Promise?", they asked me, their eyes sparkling with expectation.

"Promise!", I returned confidently.

With the loud cheers of my fans guiding me on my way, I began to spring towards the stadium, optmistic yeah. Man, had I known what would happen, maybe I would've just stayed at home.

-----------------
Think of Tida as something of a cross between Tidus and FFX-2's Yuna. Tidus hair color but Yunas hairstyle and Tidus clothes with the feminine touch of Yunas standard gunner-dresssphere. Amanos sign for both of them is far too complex for me to even WANT to describe it, even if it was within my capabilities, but I figure I shouldn't spoonfeed you those things.

Anyway, this is another of my favorite kinds of stories, the WHAT-IF?-kind of stories. And if you think I genderbent the whole cast, the answer is: No. Just Tidus.
So the premise for this chapter (and the whole story): What if Tidus was a girl?
