Thunder Plains

Chapter 1- Thunder Plains

The Thunder Plains were the link that connected the Northern and Southern provinces of Spira. The terrain was mainly barren and deserted, devoid of almost any human life save the occasional brave traveller who dared cross the inhospitable land. Yuna’s entourage had finally reached the halfway point, Rin’s travel agency the marker that invited daring travellers a chance at rest even in these arid conditions.

Another lightning bolt striked the plains. “Wow, that was close one” Wakka chuckled.

“Stop kidding around” Lulu said harshly.

“Yes ma’am” Wakka snapped up sharply, thoroughly put back into his place.

Wakka hear a soft whimpering behind him. He turned to face the source of the sound. He saw Rikku clasping her hands tightly to her chest, her eyes affixed on the group before her. The soft whimper turned into a low laugh.

“Heh, heh, heh” Tidus repeated, hoping to decipher it’s meaning by repeating it himself. “You’re giving me the creeps” His voice cracked with mild fear.

Another bolt struck a nearby tower. “Ugh” Rikku fell to her knees in fear. She stared plainly at the ground, consumed entirely by her phobia. She fell onto her hands, the men of the group tensing, unsure of whether to help her or attack her. None of them knew whether she was consumed by fear, infected by a fiend, or merely displaying her true coulors at last. And even though Rikku had become a friend after such a short time, none of them would hesitate to kill her, for the sake of the pilgrimage.

She suddenly sprang to life, scurrying across the floor like a fiend possessed. Before anyone could react she was clasped tightly to Tidus’s leg, shaking it violently. Tidus fought to retain his balance. “I wanna go home, I hate thunder, I hate lightning!” She indicated the Travel agency “Let’s go rest over there, please?”

“This storm never stops” Auron stood over her, the executioner to her dying pleas for salvation. “Better to cross quickly”

“I know, but just for a little while?” Rikku attempted to salvage her escape from this hell torn world.

Auron surrendered content to offer her the security she so desperately craved. “Fine”

The group entered the agency, Rikku leading the group as the one must eager to be free from the thunderous crash of the lightning. “I’m a little tired” Yuna said. She stepped towards the attendant. “Do you have a room available?”

The girl checked her logs. “Ar, yes Lady Summoner yes. Just over that way” She indicated the corridor leading off to the side, leading deeper into the building.

“We rest here tonight. Be ready to leave by morning” Auron said plainly, always the leader of the group.

Another crash of thunder resonated through the dead land- rousing Rikku from her delicate slumber. She brought the sheets up to her heaving chest- hoping the small action might help settle her fears. “Aaah!”

But another crash of lightning threw her from her bed- collapsing to the floor with a whimpering sigh. She threw her hands against her ears- desperate to keep the horrible noise at bay. However it did little to settle her- so instead she decided too storm into the adjoining corridor in search of her salvation.

She stumbled down the corridor blindly- thrusting herself against the wall for support. She could feel the fear closing all around her- feeling panics cold grip beginning to take hold over her, the touch of its cold dead hands around her.

But suddenly the support behind her gave- she fell backwards into the darkness. She finally hit a solid surface beneath her. She lay there defenceless, ready to accept her fate. But like a strike descending from the heavens the shadows suddenly retreated. Rikku realized exactly what had happened- she had collapsed through a door into the waiting arms of someone else’s room. Her shaken mind quickly devised some kind of apology.

“Rikku?” A siren’s voice resonated through the room- steadying her shaking nerve. She found the elusive source of the elegant voice.

Yuna jumped in her bed- rising up on her outstretched arms to face the newest occupant of the room, her elbow supporting her weight. “You ok” she asked.

Rikku shook her head meekly- another crash of the thunder outside forced her to curl in a whimpering ball. Yuna stepped down from her bed- her delicate robes cascading freely as they succumbed to the force of gravity. Yuna took the young girl into her long, warm arms- giving her the kind of caring support she had longer for. Because now the harsh touch of lightning seemed so faraway. And at least- she was at peace.

This one has been filling my work box for a while now but I never got around to finishing it- I know I say that about a lot of the stuff I right but this one I mean it. I wouldn’t call it my best work and when I was writing it I could that my heart wasn’t truly into it but I started it and I planned to end it- even if it’s really just a novelisation of what you already know.

Even though I had plenty of material to go on with the whole ‘Rikku is afraid of lightning thing’ I always found myself trailing back to my days in Secondary School (That’s High school for you beer swilling yanks) when they was a girl in my class that looked and acted surprising similar to Rikku in that she was shit scared of lightning. I however always took the Wakka approach of enjoying watching the sudden jolts of electricity shooting don from the sky. If you are some how miraculously reading this- you know who you are.

I know what you’re thinking as you’re going into this but to avoid it being too weird and just so I don’t have to work around it just pretend that the two of them are in no way related. I don’t care how you work it out there, but if that may be your thing then go ahead and leave the story untampered. Some may call that lazy story writing but you’ve read my previous comment and I didn’t want it becoming to zany or dethatched from the real plot.

And like i say on alot of my other works- yes i will continue it but i have no idea when. Reviews always encourage me towards writing a particular one but like i said i'm unsure of when i will finish it.
