awakening to light
Chapter 2
When I finally returned to the world, I was greeted with a blinding white light. Just the action of opening my eyelids, took all the concentration I could muster. As I squinted through the slits of my eye’s, trying to differentiate what was around me. I realised that the light was actually sunlight. ‘Hmmm’ well ok. sunlight is a good thing right. It meant I wasn’t dead.
As my eye’s began to adjust to the sudden onslaught of daylight. I notice a figured standing in the corner of the room, shielded by the sunlight. I tried to focus on the outline, trying to figure out who it could be. “How do you feel?” That voice. I’ve heard it before, but where. Damn I just can’t place my finger on where. “You had us all worried, Reno.” The figure walked forward, suddenly illuminated by the sunlight. “Tseng” A confused look came across my face. ‘Why is Tseng standing in the corner of my room’ I thought to myself.
He walked over as if levitating. “How are you feeling?” he asked in his usual detached voice. “There are better ways of getting out of work"
“Well boss you know me. Always trying to find a way out of honest work” I replied with a smirk.
He just stood there at the end of the bed with a complete emotionless look on his face, ‘hmmm’ was the best response I got. I attempted to sit upright on the bed, grimacing as I did so. Tseng didn’t move a muscle to help me to right myself as I fell back against the bed in pain. ‘Well thanks for being so caring’ I thought to myself.
“You deserved that Reno!” he said stoically, his eyes never leaving me.
“And why is that?”
“Because you never listen to any of the orders I give you.” He had a point there, I never really listened to anything he had to say.
“I’m sorry” was all I could think of saying.
“For what?” he replied in his monotone voice.
‘Shit. He was really pissed. What the hell had I done this time’ “Err…Everything I guess” I attempted to sit upright again, this time moving slowly.
“There a button to move the bed up Reno!” he walked around to the side of the bed, picking up a remote. “You always have to be difficult don’t you” he press a button, raising the bed to an upright sitting position. “Thank you Tseng” I placed my hand on top of his. “You always did know how…” I removed my hand quickly as Tseng stiffened up. “Reno. Don’t touch me” he dropped the remote on the side of the bed and walked back to the foot of the bed “You had your chance Reno”
‘What the hell did that mean?’ “What…When…What…” I sputtered in confusion. “Watch yourself Reno. There are people who would love to see you dead” He replied stoically. Then walked to the door to leave, stopping briefly “I won’t always be there to help you” Then left without another word.
I sat on the bed staring at the door where Tseng had been standing. ‘What the hell had I done’
